In Carnuntum wird die Römerzeit auf unvergleichliche Weise lebendig. Weltweit einmalig wurde ein Stadtviertel der ehemaligen Römerstadt am Originalstandort wiedererrichtet. Alles ist so wie vor 1.700 Jahren. Damals wurde in Carnuntum bei der Kaiserkonferenz im Jahr 308 n.Chr. Weltgeschichte geschrieben. Aber bereits Jahrhunderte davor haben die Kaiser Hadrian, Marc Aurel und Septimius Severus die Geschicke der römischen Provinzhauptstadt Carnuntum maßgeblich beeinflusst.

Carnuntum takes us back to Roman times in an incomparable way. Unique throughout the world, a city quarter of the former ancient Roman city has been reconstructed in its original location. Everything is as it was 1.700 years ago. In those days world history was written in Carnuntum during the Emperors’ Conference of 308 AD. Already before this date the emperors Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and Septimius Severus had influenced the fate of the Roman capital of the province, Carnuntum.

Reconstruction of a roman city - Carnuntum 2011 - Making of the scale model

In 2006, on occasion of the 2000 year anniversary of the former Roman capital of Pannonia superior, Carnuntum, we had the chance to start a long-term project, aiming for a total reconstruction of the city, the legionary fortress and its canabae, including the surrounding landscape, which will result in a 1:300 scale model measuring over 20 x 7 meters as well as a series of other media including Film and interactive Applications.

The Scale Model will inherit approx. 5600 buildings and will be processed by a virtual model which is then being plotted on a 3d printer, either as a single instance or in negative-forms in order to duplicate certain smaller buildings by cast moulting. The generated computer models will also be used for the film scenes and have to be prepared accordingly. The final result can be visited at the Archaeological Park Carnuntum in Austria.

Das römische Carnuntum - The Roman City of Carnuntum - città romane

Настоящий римский город в археологическом парке Petronell-Carnuntum. Carnuntum war die Provinzhauptstadt in Pannonia Superior. Carnuntum wurde erstmals 6. n. Chr. als keltische Stadt der Boier erwähnt. Unter Kaiser Claudius wurde 40 n. Chr. von der Legio XV Apollinaris ein Standlager am Südufer der Donau errichtet. Dieses bildete den Grundstein für das spätere römische Carnuntum. Der Philosoph und römische Kaiser Marc Aurel lebte 3 Jahre in Carnuntum. Von dort führte er Kriege gegen die Markomannen auf der anderen Donauseite. Im Jahr 433 n. Chr. wurde die Provinz aufgegeben und offiziell an die Hunnen abgetreten.

Roman Invasion Carnuntum

Carnuntum was a civilian site of Celts, located on the Danube river in Austria which the Romans conquered and transformed in a very important legionary and storage camp. The environment was and is very rich in cereals, this allowed the Romans to supply their troops and to accommodate them while they defending the Limes-Border on the Rhine against the Germans.

The owner of the video rights is the archaeological museum Carnuntinum. I have allowed myself to make only smaller video cuts. I have no advertising or commercial incomes with this film, the publication is on a voluntary basis and my interest is to make the site still better known in the hole world. Thanks!

Carnuntum (Καρνους, Carnous in Ancient Greek according to Ptolemy) was a Roman Legionary Fortress or castrum legionarium and also headquarters of the Pannonian fleet from 50 AD. After the 1st century it was capital of the Pannonia Superior province. It also became a large city of 50,000 inhabitants.[1][2]

Its impressive remains are situated on the Danube in Lower Austria halfway between Vienna and Bratislava in the Carnuntum Archaeological Park extending over an area of 10 km² near today's villages of Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.

DVD Carnuntum - Vom Legionslager zur Donaumetropole / From military camp to Danube metropolis (2006)

The virtual documentation about the Romans in Carnuntum is the result of an extensive cooperation with the Department for Culture and Science of the Province of Lower Austria, the Institute for Ancient Cultural History of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the Archaeological Park Carnuntum and the Department for Surveying and Geoinformation of the Province of Lower Austria.

The DVD takes us back 2000 years, to the year 6 AD, when a winter camp was erected in the Carnuntum area under the Roman general Tiberius during a large-scale military offensive against the Germanic tribes who had settled north of the Danube. Starting with the military camp, the development of the settlement is documented up to the Flavian period at the beginning of the 2nd century AD.

Apart from an overview of the ancient landscape, scaled virtual reconstructions of former buildings are shown as ideal reconstructions, including the former headquarters (principia), commander's quarters (prätorium), legionary barracks (contubernia), the burial road and the old amphitheatre with room for about 6000 spectators.

The 3D reconstructions and films are based on the results of excavations and numerous historical data. The basis for the three-dimensional reconstruction of ancient Carnuntum was created by building a digital model of the terrain, where all the available current and historical data were used as well as a complete vectorisation of the archaeological excavation and prospection results.

Selected finds - such as the winged griffin, a bronze figure from the 1st century AD, or the head of the goddess Athena Parthenos, one of the most precious finds among Carnuntum bronze objects -- were reconstructed using photogrammetric methods and can be viewed interactively on the DVD as 3D models. In addition summaries of scientific works, maps and pictures complete the contents of the DVD, which can be viewed in three languages: German, English and Slovak. To order this DVD please visit:

Vom Legionslager zur Donaumetropole

Die virtuelle Dokumentation über die Römer in Carnuntum ist Ergebnis einer umfangreichen Kooperation mit der Abteilung Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Niederösterreich, dem Institut für Antike Kulturgeschichte der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, dem Archäologischen Park Carnuntum und der Abteilung Vermessung und Geoinformation des Landes Niederösterreich.

Die DVD führt genau 2000 Jahre, ins Jahr 6 n. Chr. zurück, als der römische Feldherr Tiberius im Zug einer groß angelegten Militäroffensive gegen die nördlich der Donau siedelnden Germanen ein Winterlager im Raum Carnuntum errichten ließ. Ausgehend vom Legionslager wird die Siedlungsentwicklung bis ins flavische Zeitalter zu Beginn des 2. Jhds. n. Chr. dokumentiert.

Neben einer Übersicht der antiken Geländesituation werden maßstabsgetreue virtuelle Nachbauten damaliger Anlagen, wie etwa des ehemaligen Stabsgebäudes principia, prätorium, Sitz des Kommandanten, der Mannschaftsunterkünfte, conturbenien, der Gräberstraße und des alten, ca. 6000 Personen fassende Amphitheaters als Idealrekonstruktion gezeigt.

Die 3d-Rekonstruktionen und -Filme, basieren auf Grabungsergebnisse und zahlreiche historischen Daten. Die Grundlage für die dreidimensionale Rekonstruktion des antiken Carnuntum bildete die Erstellung eines digitalen Geländemodells, in das alle verfügbaren aktuellen und historischen Daten eingeflossen sind und eine möglichst vollständige Vektorisierung der archäologischen Grabungs- und Prospektionsergebnisse.

Ausgewählte Fundstücke, wie der geflügelte Greif, eine Bronzefigur aus dem 1. Jhd. n. Chr. oder der Kopf der Göttin Athena Parthenos, eines der kostbarsten Stücke unter den Carnuntiner Bronzen wurden mittels photogrammetrischer Erfassung rekonstruiert und können so auf der DVD als 3d-Modelle interaktiv betrachtet werden. Darüber hinaus ergänzen Zusammenfassungen der wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten, Pläne und Bilder den Inhalt der DVD, die in drei Sprachen, Deutsch, Englisch und Slowakisch erhältlich ist. Erhältlich bei
