#Roman #Odeon of #Kos - Open-air theatre on Greek Island
On the island of Kos, just outside of the city centre is an open air Roman amphitheatre. The Odeon of Kos. This was not only a theatre and place of entertainment but also where the senate met and held political meetings. This was built by the Romans in the 2nd century.
“Regarding the Roman Odeon, although it has been restored, its first nine rows of seats are still the original marble ones that were occupied the important citizens of the time. After a landing, the Odeon has other five rows of seats made of granite, destined for regular people. It currently has a total number of 18 rows of seats. Some other parts that were also found in good condition were the floor, the wings, and the orchestra pit. Source:
“The building was initially roofed and seated approximately 750 persons. Its cavea with a northern orientation was supported by arched constructions built on pillars of caster masonry (opus caementicium).” Source:
After this, it was a short walk to the Casa Romana and then later down into the city centre and the Agora. Certainly worth a visit if you like ancient ruins or if you have never seen an open-air amphitheatre. What I liked about this one, was that it was quite small compared to some of the other bigger sites in Rome or Ephesus, for example. The Odeon on Kos is of course on a relatively small island, which explains that! Odeon Kos - Open-air theatre on Greek Island

Odeon in Kos - Das römische Odeon in Kos Stadt - The roman Odeon at Kos town

Kos Town Greece 2018
Kos Island Greece is one of Dodocanese islands in the Aegean See. It is the third largest island of the Dodocanese, after Rodes and Karpathos.
On the northeastern part of island is situated Kos town the capital and main port.
Town is ideal place for walking around and admire ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins or medieval castle, or just walk along the Palm Tree Avenue. You can go around town by bicycle since there are many bicycle paths through the town. Mini train for sightseeing is a bit expensive for what you get.
Port is important and very vibrant part of town. There are many excursion wooden boats for neighboring islands Persimos, Kalymnos and Plati. Also ferryboats for Bodrum Turkey, and many fancy yachts.
All along the port are bars and restaurants with nice drinks and tasty food ( Gyros, Souvlaki, posa cheese in wine...).
Medieval Castle of the Knights of Saint John, Neratzia is next to the port. Entrance is by bridge that crosses over beautiful Palm Tree Avenue. It was closed due to last year (2017) earthquake.
In the center of town is large platan tree seeded by Hippocrates ( legend ) father of medicine, who lived on Kos and worked in Asclepion.
There are many signs of past all around town: Agora, Roman Villa, Roman Odeon, Western archeological site, Asclepion 3.5 km from town.
Near the town there are nice beaches with good beach bar like: Lambi, Mylos, Ag. Fokas and Thermes.

Delphy Epidaurus Sanctuary of Asclepius Greek Ἐπίδαυρος Epidauros Drone Aerial Video : Greece
Epidaurus (/ˌɛpɪˈdɔːrəs/; Ancient Greek: Ἐπίδαυρος, Epidauros) was a small city (polis) in ancient Greece, on the Argolid Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf. Two modern towns bear the name Epidavros (Modern Greek: Επίδαυρος): Palaia Epidavros and Nea Epidavros. Since 2010 they belong to the new municipality of Epidaurus, part of the regional unit of Argolis. The seat of the municipality is the town Lygourio.
The prosperity brought by the asclepeion enabled Epidaurus to construct civic monuments, including the huge theatre that delighted Pausanias for its symmetry and beauty, used again today for dramatic performances, the ceremonial hestiatoreion (banqueting hall), and a palaestra. The ancient theatre of Epidaurus was designed by Polykleitos the Younger in the 4th century BC. The original 34 rows were extended in Roman times by another 21 rows. As is usual for Greek theatres (and as opposed to Roman ones), the view on a lush landscape behind the skênê is an integral part of the theatre itself and is not to be obscured. It seats up to 14,000 people.
The theatre is admired for its exceptional acoustics, which permit almost perfect intelligibility of unamplified spoken words from the proscenium or skēnē to all 14,000 spectators, regardless of their seating (see Ref., in Greek). Famously, tour guides have their groups scattered in the stands and show them how they can easily hear the sound of a match struck at center-stage. A 2007 study by Nico F. Declercq and Cindy Dekeyser of the Georgia Institute of Technology indicates that the astonishing acoustic properties may be the result of the advanced design: the rows of limestone seats filter out low-frequency sounds, such as the murmur of the crowd, and amplify high-frequency sounds from the stage.

Casa Romana in kos (Κως)
In 1933 the great earthquake nearly destroyed the whole island. The Italians, who at the time of the earthquake were occupying the island, perceived the destruction as an opportunity to reconstruct the city's building plan, conducting numerous excavations, with the knowledge that beneath the leveled structures ancient monuments lay.
