Section Of Historic Roman Theater in Palmyra Destroyed By ISIS
(CNN)ISIS fighters have destroyed part of a Roman amphitheater in the ancient city of Palmyra, according to Syrian state news. Syrian news agency SANA reported that ISIS destroyed the facade of the Roman theater and the Tetrapylon in the ancient city of Palmyra. Syrian state news also reported that 12 civilians were executed by ISIS militants in Palmyra on Thursday. Syrian regime forces managed to briefly push the militants out of the city last year. However, Palmyra fell to ISIS again in December when Syrian armed forced pulled out and over 4,000 ISIS soldiers returned to the desert city once more.

Palmyra is an ancient city and is situated in the desert of Syria. The city was occupied by a number of empires before falling under the control of the roman empire. The city was recently occupied by Isis and risked being destroyed. However it was liberated by the Syrian army in March 2016.

Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists have destroyed part of a Roman theater and the legendary four-column structure ‘Tetrapylon’ in the ancient city of Palmyra, the Syrian antiquities chief said.
The facade of the Roman theater has been completely destroyed, according to Maamoun Abdulkarim, the Syrian director-general for antiquities and museums, as cited by Reuters.
If Islamic State is not ousted from Palmyra in the near future, “it means more destruction,” Abdulkarim added.

The scale of damage is currently unknown.
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova describes the act as “a new war crime and an immense loss for the Syrian people and for humanity.”
“As far as we know, Syrian forces keep on trying to liberate this city and all other from terrorists,” Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to TASS.
Peskov declined to comment on whether Russia is planning to help the Syrian Army liberate Palmyra, forwarding the question to the Russian Defense Ministry.
Peskov added that “Russian soldiers are assisting Syrians in their fight against terrorists.”
IS took control of Palmyra from Syrian troops in December for the second time, after the city was liberated by Syria’s government forces, backed by Russian air power, in March.
Syrian President Bashar Assad stated that IS managed to retake Palmyra, “backed by Americans, under surveillance of the US drones; they came from the side of the desert and retook Palmyra.”

“ISIS was created under the supervision of the United States... and later Turkey sponsored this State. So we cannot expect to have genuine fight against ISIS by Turkey or the United States, and the recent, more stark example is the attack on Palmyra a few weeks ago,” the Syrian leader told Japanese broadcaster TBS, in an interview also published on the SANA agency website.
“Today, we are talking, and ISIS has been attacking Deir Ezzor in the eastern part of Syria, and the Americans did nothing to stop ISIS.
This is where the so-called international alliance against terrorism has been working for more than one year and a half now, and they achieved nothing, because they are not serious, Assad added.
The ancient city of Palmyra was one of the most important centers of the Roman Empire. Its monuments are included as a UNESCO World Heritage site. After the site was recaptured by government forces last year, reconstruction began to repair extensive damage done by IS.
In particular, experts were working on is a remarkable Lion of Allat statue from the 1st century AD, as well as the Arch of Triumph, the Temple of Baalshamin and the iconic 2,000-year-old Bel Temple.

Palmyra is bursting with the music of life after ISIL attempted but failed to mute the echoes of history and art in the ancient Syrian city. Palmyra Roman Theater witnessed a symphonic concert by local talents, under the title of “The Sun Gate” –the second such event to be held in the once ISIL-controlled city after the Russian orchestra's performance headed by Maestro Valery Gergiev. Militants of the terrorist group had previously blown up the time-honored theater following a mass execution of 25 Syrian soldiers there. CCTVNEWS correspondent Alaa Ebrahim reports from the scene.

Palmyra: A look inside recaptured ancient city in Syria - BBC News
Government forces, backed by the Russian military, who recaptured Palmyra on Sunday, say they will use the ancient city as a base to launch more attacks against the Islamic State group (IS).
The Unesco World Heritage site was occupied by the group for 10 months.
Footage from inside the site shows that much of it is still standing, although there is also extensive damage.

Syria: First views of liberated Palmyra in Ruptly EXCLUSIVE drone footage
Exclusive ruptly drone footage captured Friday showed the liberated city of Palmyra, taken back from self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), backed by Russian Air Force on Thursday.
The city is now fully cleared of IS militants and government troops have seized strategic heights south of the city, carrying on with their offensive eastwards.
Palmyra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fell to IS in 2015. The Syrian government liberated the city from IS terrorists in March 2016, but lost it again several months later. After seizing the city for the second time, IS destroyed part of the Roman theater and legendary Tetrapylon.

Russian orchestra performs concert at Palmyra in Syria
A Russian orchestra played in the ruins of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra on Thursday. Hundreds of people listened to musicians from St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre as they played in the Roman amphitheatre at the ancient site.
