It is located in the county of the same name, in the southeastern part of Romania.
It is located on the Black Sea coast, in a lagoon to the east, hilly in the north and in the central part, and in the plain to the south and west. The city has a 6 km long private beach.
Was founded after the Greek colonization of the Black Sea basin by the merciful colonists in the 7th-5th centuries BC, under the name of Tomis.
This name is probably derived from the Greek word (Tomí) meaning cut, cleavage. According to the legend, Iason and his arrogates would have been here after they were sent to the Caucasus to steal the Golden Wool. Followed by King Colhide's fleet, Aietes Uliul, he had cut off his son, Absyrtos, until then held hostage on board to force the king to seek and gather the remains for the funeral ceremony, giving the Argonautes
The time required to run for the Bosphorus. However, archaeologists consider it more plausible that the cut (shoreline) would rather have designated the ancient port, today submerged, in front of the Casino.
Another possible origin of the name would be Tomiris, the Queen of the Massages, a getic tribe living between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea (Herodotus).
The Milezians found a getic settlement in these places, the new city reaching the level of a polis only in the IV-III century BC.
The port used by the Greeks to trade with the inhabitants of these regions (Dacians, Scythians and Celts) Of an urban center.
Tomis became part of the Roman Empire in the year 46, being renamed Constantiana. Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet, found his exile between 8-17 years. And spent the last eight years in Constantia .
The city is one of the most important in Romania, one of four roughly equal-size cities which rank after Bucharest.
The metropolitan area, founded in 2007, comprises 14 localities located at a maximum distance of 30 km (19 mi) from the city, and, with 387,593 inhabitants,it is the third largest metropolitan area.
Situated at the crossroads of several commercial routes, Constanța lies on the western coast of the Black Sea, 185 miles (298 km) from the Bosphorus Strait.
An ancient metropolis and Romania's largest sea port, traces its history some 2,500 years. Originally called Tomis, legend has it that Jason landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece.
One of the largest cities in Romania is now an important cultural and economic center, worth exploring for its archaeological treasures and the atmosphere of the old town center.
Its historical monuments, ancient ruins, grand Casino, museums and shops, and proximity to beach resorts make it the focal point of Black Sea coast tourism.
Open-air restaurants, nightclubs and cabarets offer a wide variety of entertainment. Regional attractions include traditional villages, vineyards, ancient monuments and the Danube Delta, the best preserved delta in Europe.
Recorded in January 2019

Constanța old town (centrul vechi) filmed in 4K
The old town is a district of Constanța, without administrative existence. It corresponds to the extent of Constanta in 1900. It includes the Peninsula where all the ancient and medieval history of the city is concentrated. This is commonly considered to include the part of Constanța located between the Black Sea, Ferdinand Boulevard, Mihai Viteazu and Termelor Streets, a perimeter corresponding to the ancient city of Tomis, the Byzantine fortress Constantiniana and the Ottoman town Küstence.
One of the main tourist attractions of the old city is the statue dedicated to the Roman poet Publius Ovidius Naso, in Ovidiu Square (Piața Ovidiu). Here are The Great Mahmudiye Mosque (Moscheea Mare Mahmoud II) build by King Carol I in 1910 and the Museum of National History (Muzeul de Istorie Naţională şi Arheologie). Other landmarks are The Roman Mosaics (Edificiul Roman cu Mozaic), The Genoese Lighthouse (Farul Genovez), The Casino (Cazinoul), The House with Lions (Casa cu Lei), Romanian Navy Museum (Muzeul marinei române), and Hotel Palace. Most important churches are Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (Catedrala Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel) and the Greek Church Transfiguration (Metamorphosis).

Constanța Casino
As the nation celebrated the 158th anniversary of The Little Union on Tuesday, January 24th this year, I went out for a relaxing stroll by The Black Sea waterfront in the city of Constanţa, Romania. The sea was remarkably calm this time of year, despite the cold weather and occasional gusts of wind.
What's up with this historical mumbo-jumbo, you say? Read on if you're interested.
The year 1859 saw the unification of the Romanian County with Moldavia into one entity, thus forming the United Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia - a milestone event later known as The Little Union. This paved the way for the later Independence War against the Ottoman Empire (1877-78) and the Great Union of 1918, when Transylvania and several other regions finally joined the rest of the kingdom, thus forming modern-day Romania.
After having been an important Greek (and later Roman) fortress in ancient times and an economical hub for the medieval Genoan trade throughout the Black Sea, Constanţa lessened considerably under the economically prohibitive Ottoman domination of Dobrogea until the second half of the 19th century. The Principalities' gain of the region as a result of the 1877 - 1878 Independence War against the ruling (but already declining) Ottoman Empire saw the entire county grow at an impressive rate, with Constanţa now Romania's main seaside port. There was much political interest supporting this development, as the fledgling Romanian Kingdom had a burning desire to prove itself as a local power among Europe's empires.
This spawned a number of massive engineering projects, such as then Europe's longest system of bridges, which connected Dobrogea to the rest of the Romanian county by railroad. Constanţa was being built and rebuilt on an imposing scale and arguably one of its most iconic symbols still stands today as a testament to that era: the Casino.
Built in 1909, the Casino opened its doors to the public the following year. Though its design phase was fraught with numerous redesigns and the end result faced harsh criticism from contemporary press, the edifice nevertheless shortly became the an emblem for Constanţa, as the city lived through its golden age. The Casino's architecture and surrounding promenade have to this day featured on all manner of memorabilia, from stamps to postcards, sculptures, paintings and so on.
My video starts with a shot of the Casino and then plays around with a few other places of interests in that area, such as the Genoan Lighthouse, a statue of national poet Mihai Eminescu, The (former) Fleet Headquarters building, a new-ish monument built in honor of fallen sailors and one of the numerous WW2 and Cold War era bunkers in the region (this one acting as foundation and breakwater for part of the promenade itself).

Four US military transport planes landed near Romania's Black Sea coast on Thursday night, airport officials confirmed, and seven more are expected during the night.
The planes landed at Constanta's international airport, 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Bucharest. They carried 250 troops, equipment and food, and are expected to remain in Romania until Monday, said Alexandru Bazdac, an airport official in Constanta.
The US troops were accommodated in a hotel near the Constanta airport and in two Romanian military bases near the airport.
Romanian military police troops stepped up security measures, sealing off the airport area.
Last week, Romania agreed to let the United States use its airports and airspace in a possible military strike against Iraq. Dozens of US experts are in Romania to evaluate the country's military infrastructure, including the airport in Constanta, as well as military hospitals and emergency services in the region.
The decision to land in Romania comes after the US military had to delay its deployment in Turkey because negotiations over a financial package to compensate Turkey for economic losses from a possible war in Iraq are taking longer than expected.
The former Soviet-bloc country is not expected to become a major operational base for US troops in a possible war with Iraq.
Romania, which received an invitation to join NATO last November, will also contribute to a US-led coalition with 278 non-combat troops, including those specialising in nuclear, biological and chemical decontamination, de-mining, and military police and medical assistance.
Romania was under communist rule until 1989 and is keen to show itself a reliable ally of Washington.
The Balkan country has recently come in conflict with some of its European allies over its pro-US stance, with French president Jacques Chirac warning Romania and other eastern countries that their future in the European Union may be in danger.
Romania hopes to join the EU by 2007.

Constanța railway station (Gara Constanța) and the nearby park filmed in 4K
Constanţa railway station is the largest station in Constanţa and on the Romanian Black Sea coast. The train station is not far from the shipyard. Near the train lines is exhibited as a museum piece an old steam locomotive from 1911.
There is a ship placed in the train station square, to greet tourists that arrived here for vacation. Near the train station is a park, which is a good place to rest in a hot day, especially when you are waiting for your train. There are a lot of benches in the shade, a nice fountain, and a lot of grass.

The project
Project: OLKAS: From the Aegean to the Black Sea -- medieval Ports in the Maritime Routs of the East.
The aim of the Olkas project is the promotion of the medieval city --ports of the Black Sea and the cultural heritage preserved in them, in order to contribute to the development of the cultural tourism of the area. This development tents to highlight the cultural, tourist and economic relations in the region, through the medieval monuments preserved. The monuments, movable and immovable, reflect the historical, social, economic and cultural conditions in which culture has been developed. They are also the living witnesses which testify the contacts between these regions. Through the sea routes have been succeed the communication between coastal cities of Black Sea and Aegean with the capital of the Byzantine Empire, Constantinople. These roads, which have been circulated by merchants, soldiers, artists, travelers, pilgrims etc, became a direct way for the transmission of goods, products, ideas, values and artistic trends which have greatly influenced the cultural heritage. The highlight of this communication and association of the cities is the aim of the project Olkas.
The project is co-funded by the European program «Joint Operational Program BLACK SEA 2007-2013» and by national resources, and it is coordinated by the European Centre of Byzantine and Post Byzantine Monuments (E.K.B.M.M.). Through the project Olkas has already been established a network of bodies representing the countries around the Black Sea (Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Georgia) which focus on the study and the promotion of the medieval heritage preserved.
Partners of EKBMM in this project are 7 institutions from 6 countries: Cultural Center of Thessaloniki (GR), Istanbul University (TU), Cultural Awareness Foundation (TU), Varna Regional Museum (BU), Museum for National History and Archaeology for Constanta (RO), Branch for the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Odessa (UK) and G. Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation (GE). In addition, there are 4 associate partners: Russian National Committee for Black Sea Economic Cooperation (RU), Committee for Preservation of Cultural Heritage (UK), Institute of Archaeology V.Parnan of the Romanian Academy (RO) and Administration of State Historical -- Architectural Reserve Icherisheher under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AZ).
Among the activities included in this project are: the documentation of the selected ports in a data base, the production of a documentary film, the organization of a portable photo-exhibition, the creation of a website, the implementation of some educational programs for students, the exchange of the experience and the expertise through conferences and workshops and the organization of an International Symposium in Thessaloniki.
