Romsey War Horse Memorial Unveiled by Princess Anne - 2015
The Army Remount Service was established in 1887 to provide animals for military service. It played an important role in South Africa in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, but it faced its major challenge in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I. Between the outbreak of war and Armistice in 1918, the Remount Service dealt with more than a million horses and mules in the United Kingdom, over half of which were imported from North America.
In order to handle these animals, a string of camps was set up across the country. The first of these was on the outskirts of Romsey. (There was another immediately north of Southampton at Swaythling.)
The Romsey camp was established at the summit of Pauncefoot Hill, in the vicinty of Ranvilles Farm and received its first horses in March 1915. By the end of the war it had processed about 120,000 or around 10% of the animals acquired by the Remount Service. Its primary function was to train horses and mules for war service. The camp at Swaythling was responsible for collecting them from camps all over England and shipping them to France.
The Romsey camp consisted of ten squadrons each containing 210 men; a headquarters unit and a veterinary hospital. The complement was 2101 men. In addition there were local civilian workers who undertook basic domestic duties. The camp had a canteen, a YMCA, reading rooms, a library, a hospital and its own Post Office.

Some horses came from other camps in England, but those from North America were usually unloaded at Devonport and then came to Romsey by train. Since they were often semi-wild, their transit through the town centre from the railway to the camp must have been unpleasant for the residents.
On arrival the horses were rested in an enclosure known as the kraal and after two or three weeks, their training commenced. When ready, they were despatched to Southampton for service in Europe.

In 1918, Romsey camp was enlarged to handle demobilisation. This created disciplinary problems and Colonel Edward Sandars was appointed as Commandant there, because he had a good record for handling such problems.
His daughter Nancy who was born in 1914 remembers the camp and living at Romsey. She has provided some photographs of the family's time here and will be amongst the people attending the unveiling of the horse. To learn more about this distinguished lady, go to nancysandars.org.uk

The Tudor Rose pub toilets, Romsey Hampshire HL Dudley Tri-shell
Thanks to the other guys for pointing this one out to me. This is a very old pub in the market town of Romsey with outside toilets. The urinal is a slab fed by a Shires while the toilet has a HL Dudley Tri-shell in white that is missing most of it's chain.
It has been a while since I have seen a real pub like his and in the right setting in a small town.

Sneak Peak At UK Tropical Growers Nursery ????????
Please note: I was not paid to advertise or given any free plants I just really loved this place.
I was lucky enough to make a visit to this amazing nursery here in the UK and was allowed to film. The Nursery has started to go under full renovation so I was told to excuse any mess. I thought it was awesome.. a proper indoor jungle! They grow mainly Tropical Garden plants but also some House Plants ????
This nursery grows many of their plants from seed or plugs and they travel the UK taking part in all the top plant shows.
Whilst I was there I picked up a lovely Canna Pretoria, a Tetrapanax Rex and an Echeveria.
Viewing is by appointment only.
The Nursery is called Palms & Exotics, Romsey UK.
