Siamo Noi - Arezzo, Rondine: città della pace
Rondine è un borgo medioevale in provincia di Arezzo. Fino al 1977 il borgo si trovava in stato di completo abbandono e di incuria. L’allora vescovo di Arezzo, Telesforo Cioli, affidò la cura e la rinascita di Rondine e della sua Chiesa a delle giovani famiglie della zona. A questi, negli anni successivi si unirono la Comunità del Sacro Cuore e la Comunità Giovanile di Saione di Arezzo.
Rondine diviene luogo di formazione, specialmente per giovani e famiglie e luogo di accoglienza e servizio a famiglie in difficoltà.
Nel 1997 nacque l’Associazione Rondine Cittadella della Pace, con lo scopo di promuovere una cultura di pace e di dialogo, in particolare lavorando con persone provenienti da paesi che vivono o hanno appena vissuto guerre e conflitti.

Rondine è un borgo che sorge nei pressi di Arezzo e che negli anni '50 stava per essere definitivamente abbandonato. La diocesi, però, decise di affidare il borgo ad alcune famiglie molto attive nel territorio e 18 anni fa successe l'impensabile: un luogo praticamente deserto diventò occasione di incontro e confronto per decine di ragazze e ragazzi provenienti da Paesi in conflitto tra loro: nacque infatti il progetto 'Rondine – Cittadella della Pace'.
Davide Berruti, neo direttore generale di Rondine, ci illustra la storia e gli obiettivi futuri di Rondine.

UWO study abroad at Rondine
UWO Study abroad at Rondine is a program promoted by the association Rondine Cittadella della Pace and the University of Western Ontario (Canada), addressed as well to the larger Western Community through the partnership with the affiliated Colleges Huron and King’s. The program is aimed at any student enrolled at Western (Affiliates included) and interested in pursuing the study of Italian language and culture at the beginning and intermediate level; students with interest in international relations, peace building, conflict resolution, intercultural competence.
Rondine Cittadella della Pace
L’Associazione Rondine ha sede in Italia, in un borgo medievale in Toscana a pochi chilometri da Arezzo. Qui sorge lo Studentato internazionale dove, ogni giorno, giovani provenienti da Paesi in conflitto e di culture diverse imparano a convivere con il proprio nemico. I giovani studenti di Rondine arrivano in Italia dopo un accurato percorso di selezione nei loro Paesi (Balcani, Europa Orientale e Caucaso del Nord, Caucaso del Sud, Medio Oriente, Africa Sub-Sahariana), basato su criteri accademici e psico-attitudinali per seguire corsi di laurea e post laurea nelle università italiane. Al termine del programma gli studenti ritornano nei loro Paesi con una formazione d’eccellenza e una nuova consapevolezza per lavorare al dialogo, alla riconciliazione e favorire il cambiamento.

Prime Minister Conte at UNGA: Rondine as a model of conflict mediation
Mediation and conflict resolution are among the hot topics brought by the Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to the attention of the 74th United Nations General Assembly, currently ongoing in New York. «We need to use in a more systematic way the peaceful tools for disputes resolution that we have, starting with mediation, and to involve all sectors of society in this effort, including women, and young people», says Conte. And the Rondine experience is the model to take as an example: «I like to remember an Italian initiative, conceived in a small hamlet in Tuscany - says the Premier - it is called Rondine. For over thirty years, hundreds of young people from countries in conflict have been invited to live together, to experience a daily dialogue, becoming in fact, day after day, messengers of peace».

La parola d'ordine è TED! Il presidente della Cittadella della Pace sarà tra gli speaker che interverranno nel prossimo evento promosso da TED che si terrà il 19 aprila a Roma in via della Conciliazione. Ma che cosa è TED. L'hanno chiamato l'Oscar delle Idee, l'Hollywood della genialità, un mix tra scienza comunicazione e intrattenimento. TED acronimo di Technology Entertainment Design è un progetto purtroppo ancora poco conosciuto in Italia ma realizzato da un'organizzazione no-profit nata oltre 25 anni fa in California, la cui fama ormai dilaga in tutto il mondo , proponendosi come il nuovo fenomeno mediatico del terzo millennio. TED si fonda sul motto ideas worth spreading ovveroidee che vale la pena di divulgare e in quest'ottica non poteva mancare il Progetto Rondine che da anni promuovere la risoluzione del conflitto attraverso l'esperienza di giovani che scoprono la persona nel proprio nemico attraverso la convivenza e la condivisione del quotidiano. rondine.org
Rondine Cittadella della Pace
In the heart of Tuscany, Italy, lies a small medieval town, overlooking the banks of the Arno River.
It draws from the memory of the humanism of Florence from 1400, which inspired a new world vision, whose primary focus is the human being.
This place is called Rondine Cittadella della Pace.
Rondine is home to young people coming from conflict areas. History labelled them as enemies, divided by tangible and intangible walls.
War deprived them from a future, freedom, happiness, but not from hope.
Rondine’s people decide to live together, instead of fighting as enemies. They choose to confront others, to understand their point of view, to ultimately know them. They realize something that would not be possible in their country.
They train to become leaders, to form new leading class, to come back home and change the future of their people.
180 people are already changing the world after Rondine’s training. They are now active in the construction of a peaceful world.
They are summoning their people to dialogue here, at Rondine.
They ask their people to join their change, to confront and create a new vision together.
They call other youth to dialogue and build a bridge between people.
Through a high-level training, they meet at the same table and realize that their former enemy has become their best friend.
When they first met, they did not even shake end. At the moment of saying goodbye, they could not avoid but to hug each other.
That hug created trust and hope to look together at the future.
They now know that peace is possible
Now it is time to build peace… together.
L'ambasciatore israeliano Evrony ospite a Rondine
L'associazione Rondine Cittadella della Pace ha organizzato un incontro-dibattito con l'ambasciatore israeliano presso la Santa Sede S.E. Zion Evrony.
Le relazioni tra Israele e la Santa Sede e il ruolo dei giovani nella promozione del dialogo, questo il titolo dell'iniziativa che ha visto protagonisti i ragazzi dello Studentato Internazionale.

Rondine vola verso l'Europa
Nasce il Comitato RondinEUropa mentre la Regione Toscana annuncia l'ingresso nella Fondazione di Comunità.
Grazie al sostegno di 52 europarlamentari, che hanno riconosciuto l'azione di pace di Rondine, originale ed unica nel panorama europeo, è nato il Comitato RondinEUropa. È accaduto sabato scorso, 19 febbraio, al termine della tavola rotonda EU Towards the Caucasus, alla quale hanno partecipato alcuni dei principali rappresentanti di varie istituzioni dell'Unione Europea che hanno deciso di unire le forze in nome di una causa comune: fare del Documento in 14 punti per la pace nel Caucaso una proposta elaborata che diventi una risoluzione del Parlamento Europeo. Tra i primi firmatari gli europarlamentari Roberta Angelilli, Gianni Pittella, Vittorio Prodi, Carlo Casini, David Sassoli, Silvia Costa, Katarina Nevedalova e tra gli altri Riccardo Migliori (Vicepresidente Assemblea parlamentare dell'OSCE-Organizzazione per la Sicurezza e la Cooperazione in Europa).

Students from conflict areas live and learn together

An international educational experiment dating back to the 1970s is still going strong in Italy.
We take a look at how students from the region enjoy the opportunity.
STORYLINE:
In the centre of Tuscany there is a small village where young students from various war-torn parts of the world, such as Israel, Sudan, Bosnia and Serbia, learn how to live together in peace.
This is the mission of a project called Cittadella della Pace (Village of Peace) promoted by the association Rondine (Swallow).
The history of this experiment dates back to 1977, when the Archbishop of Arezzo, Monsignor Telesforo Cioli, allowed some families to use the church and the adjacent buildings of Rondine, a deserted village from the 11th century.
Various Catholic associations gathered there and in 1990 they formed a single organisation, named Rondine after the village and the bird representing the arrival of spring.
In 1997, after the Chechen-Russian conflict, they decided to host students coming from Chechnya and Russia, in an attempt to rebuild peace and dialogue among young generations affected by the war.
Every year since then Rondine has given a scholarship to 15 young people, who come to Italy in order to attend a 2-year master's programme at university.
Among the things that have surprised me the most here in Rondine, are how similar the different cultures are, says Ahmed, a 29-year-old Sudanese man.
Here are people of 13 different nationalities and the similarities between cultures have been the greatest surprise. Just to give an example, my room mate is from Dagestan and it was the first time that I had met someone from Dagestan he adds.
Thanks to Rondine, Ahmed studies Web Design at Florence University.
In addition to that, these participants are hosted in an International Dorm in the village of Rondine, where they attend special courses such as Human Rights and Political Science.
In this way, those coming from Israel share their homes with Palestinian students, and Bosnian and Serbian young people have the chance to become friends.
This is the case of Envera, a 25-year-old girl from Bosnia.
Luckily, I have a friend from Serbia with whom I can actually, in a very nice way, discuss everything. So it helps a lot to go through everything with her and to kind of fill the blanks that both of us have.
This project serves the dual purpose to give students financial support and to change the mentality of the younger generations in order to promote a Culture of Peace.
We say that people don't look at each other for what they are but they look at each other through awful filters of prejudice, and so they look but they don't see each other says Franco Vaccari, president and founder of Rondine.
Before this experience, some of the young people living in Rondine had never met their so-called enemy.
I decided to apply for the project Rondine, Village of Peace mostly because I felt the need to get to know the other side - the Israeli former student Noam explains - the need to have a more personal and intimate relationship with a Palestinian, a relationship that maybe I was denied living in Israel, in a context of conflict, where there is a separation between the two communities, the two populations.
Noam arrived in Rondine in 2011 and now he lives in Italy and works in the Association as a tutor.
On my first day in Italy, I arrived at the train station in Arezzo and two Palestinians came to pick me up to take me to Rondine and while we were going from Arezzo to Rondine they asked me if I needed to see, to meet the other Israeli students in Rondine. Instead I replied 'I haven't come all this way from Israel to meet other Israelis' and they told me 'Good, you have passed the first test'.
