Grover beach
In the early morning come the first bicycles of men with caps with plastic
bags bungy corded to their frame.
The blue end of Grand avenue breezes away the sound of the amtrak train.
The thrift shops and the food joints stroked alive by the roar of 4by4's
And I with cottonmouth again step out the door.
Grover.........yeah, Grover Beach.
We're not all cranksters, jus' some of us is
And there's a church for everyone, especially for those speaking in tongues.
That walk between the windy beach and the town keeps out the condo nits
And I like the way the rain puddles cos streets lack the curby bits.
Grover..........when you here, it's over

History of Small Wilderness Area Preservation
In 1971, four people with a passion for the wilderness signed the SWAP Articles of Incorporation. They were Emily Polk who had the idea of saving small urban and suburban wilderness areas; Ansel Adams who spent most of his adult life taking majestic photos of the American West; Margaret Owings, founder of Friends of the Sea Otter and defender of the Big Sur wilderness; and Edgar Wayburn, awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999 and said by President Clinton to have “saved more of our wilderness than any other person alive.” Wayburn’s goal was to keep jewels of nature from being paved over or turned into housing tracts. He wrote in his autobiography, “In destroying wilderness we deny ourselves the full extent of what it means to be alive.”
Emily Polk was a conservationist, writer, artist and designer. She lived a rich life filled with adventure and travel. In 1966 she and her husband Ben Polk settled in Los Osos. Between the years of 1966–1980 Ben Polk was a professor of architecture at Cal Poly and Emily Polk founded the Small Wilderness Area Preservation activist group to preserve wild places, beginning with the Elfin Forest in Los Osos.
When Emily Polk contacted Edgar Wayburn with her idea of buying and conserving small pieces of land adjacent to cities and towns, he contacted an attorney who drew up the Articles of Incorporation for SWAP.
The Los Osos / Morro Bay Chapter of Small Wilderness Area Preservation is indebted to all four for their generosity with time and influence.
Ansel Adams died in 1984 at age 82; Margaret Owings died in 1999 at age 85; Emily Polk was 98 when she passed away in 2008; and Edgar Wayburn, age 103, passed on in 2010.

Preservation, Los Osos/Morro Bay Chapter
The Foundation for Small Wilderness Area Preservation (SWAP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation founded in 1971 by Emily Polk, Ansel Adams, Margaret Owings and Edgar Wayburn. Its purpose then, as now, is to provide a mechanism by which people can preserve vitally important natural areas of undeveloped land or small wilderness areas through land acquisition.
The Los Osos/Morro Bay Chapter of Small Wilderness Area Preservation was organized in 1985 for the specific purpose of purchasing and preserving a threatened area of Los Osos known as the Elfin Forest.
Benefits to California State Parks
The first parcel of land in San Luis Obispo County saved by SWAP was the Los Osos Oaks State Reserve purchased by California State Parks in 1971 through the efforts of Emily Polk. The Baptista Ranch on Turri Road and the Griffith Property across Los Osos Creek from the Baptista Ranch were also acquired through the efforts of the Estero Chapter of SWAP (forerunner of the current Los Osos/Morro Bay Chapter) during the 1970s, and turned over to California State Parks.
In 1987, legislation authored by Assemblyman Eric Seastrand provided funding to purchase 51.2 acres of the Elfin Forest as an addition to Morro Bay State Park. SWAP continues its stewardship of the Elfin Forest with liaison with California State Parks and an “Adopt a Park” agreement with San Luis Obispo County Parks that provides for maintenance and control of erosion and native plant restoration.
