These wines, under the custodianship of Rooiberg Winery, contribute significantly to the Foundation from wine sales.
Rooiberg, as part of the Rooiberg Breede River Conservancy Corridor Project, operates in collaboration with various property owners in the area – identified as an important conservation site which forms a natural corridor of leopard and other wild species to interact with one another.
In fact the Robertson-McGregor area has shown the highest density leopard population in expansive studies by the Landmark Foundation – an organisation that addresses threats to wildlife and works with the relevant land-owners in this regard.
Eight of the 20 shareholder farms in the Rooiberg fold were selected as having the most conservation-worthy land and form part of the BWI. This comprises more than 6 000 hectares of natural land which represents 57% of the total area of shareholders’ farms.
These are but a few of the initiatives that have given the 54 year-old Rooiberg Winery – the custodian of Game Reserve Wines – a track-record of quality wine production in harmony with nature and the interests of the community. It is today a leader with regard to compliance with the relevant clean and green and ethical systems of the South African wine industry and the relevant regulatory organisations.
Allocation of funds from Game Reserve Wines
A contribution of R3 from the proceeds of each bottle of Game Reserve wine sold, is made towards Wilderness Foundation Africa’s conservation and education programmes throughout Africa – the benefits of which support biodiversity and cultural, scientific, economic and spiritual values. R2 of each contribution will be spent on general projects while R1 accrues to conservation activities specifically in the Robertson area.
Significant funding has also gone to:
The Pride Project – benefitting some 2 000 previously disadvantaged, primary and senior learners
Wildlife Operations Group – a multi-agency partnership aiming to reduce the incidence and the successful prosecution of wildlife-related crime
Wilderness Foundation Africa’s thrust areas are Species, Spaces and People.
Somerbosch Wines
'Die Fonteine', home to Somerbosch Wines is relaxed and intimate, as you'd expect from a working farm that's been in the hands of the winemaking Roux family for more than half a century.
The farm is situated in the Helderberg area of the Stellenbosch region. The cool Atlantic sea breeze combines with other terroir elements on the farm to develop the complex nature of Somerbosch wines.

All the effort in the vineyard and cellar contributes to a wine with an intense ruby-red colour. On the palate there's delightful banana flavours and charms of strawberry, redcurrant and blackberry. This is supported by subtle vanilla notes from ageing in new barrels.

Arabella Live 2009 - Robertson's Wacky Wine Weekend

Rooiberg Boat gets a new Colour
Rooiberg Winery is well known for their red boats on the dam next to the cellar on the R60.
Each boat was named after the wives names of Rooiberg Winery`s biggest export agents.
The story takes a turn when South Africa`s Royal Piper, James McGowan recently lost his mum, VENA, to cancer and asked Rooiberg if he could sponsor one of the boats in her honour. The one boat was painted white with his mothers name in red on it.
On the 25th of March 2011, in true Celtic style, Piperjames wearing the new Mighty Men Christian tartan kilt, piped this boat out on to the dam.
The little boat, VENA, also got a new MMT flag.
South African singer, Danie Niehaus, the patron of the South African tartan, Christened the boat with Rooiberg Sparkling wine and launched it into the water whilst Piperjames played a tribute to his mother.
A beautiful and memorable story to be remembered when passing Rooiberg Winery!

The Wacky Wine Festival Is More Than Just Wine
Ahead of one of South Africa’s most famous wine festivals known as Wacky Wine we put together a team of social media influencers and took them to The Robertson Wine Valley for a bespoke “Digital Story Telling Weekend”.
Our team consisted of a Food Blogger, a Fashion Photographer, a Life Style Instagrammer, a Travel Journalist and a Travel Blogger plus a cameraman. Our aim was to film, produce and publish daily videos of our project to keep our followers visually engaged in real time showing that the valley and the festival are not only about fine wine but also about a unique lifestyle, food pairing and the wine culture that goes with it.
Our team of influencers all used the hashtag #WackyWine to curate the content they produced via Instagram, Facebook & Twitter. Three daily videos were produced during the weekend and they were distributed in real time reaching more than 6000 views via Facebook & Instagram during our project while our influencers were all still on location creating content.
The Robertson Wine Valley and the Wacky Wine Festival is certainly More Than Just Wine

Excelsior Wine - Hands on Harvest
René booked for us to go to Excelsior Wine Farm for a day of Grape Stomping.
Turns out it was much more than this.
We started with picking grapes, and then stomping them in a barrel and then drinking the delicious juice that came out the grapes.
We then used an old manual grape press to produce some wine from grapes that had been left with some yeast for a week - great fun.
We then headed off to see the wine cellar and got a detailed explanation of the wine-making process - along with tasting the wine in different stages of curing/brewing? and then we got to blend our own wine from their Merlot, Shira and Cabernet Sauvignon.
We then finished off with a delicious lunch served at the deli.
A spectacular day - one that only happens once a year (getting a tour of the farm with the wine maker) but so well worth it.
Go to excelsior.co.za and join their wine club - R100 once off membership and free delivery to anywhere in South Africa for orders of 12 bottles or more with a 15% discount and a further 15% discount if you wish to stay at their manor house.
