Rookwood Cemetery is the largest necropolis in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the most multicultural with over 90 different denominations and cultures represented. Ever year in September, it hosts the Hidden Sculpture Walk which encourages people to engage with this historic site.

Rookwood Necropolis
Somewhere at the edge of that city of the dead
there is a part where weeds uncontrollably grow,
where there’s chaos caused by a riot of flowers,
shrubs and trees. A ferocious magnificence
in which it is a privilege to wander and muse
at tilted gravestones with nearly faded names.
I remember how we, the first time we were there,
discovered that the place, in terms of surface
and variety, equals a metropole, with new
and older quarters, which are divided into sections
for religion and country of origin, typical to a place
where many nationalities have found a new home.
Celebrities are buried there and people who have
been hardly known. You’ll find mausoleums
for the rich and simple stones for those who had
a lesser share. There’s a field of honour
and as everywhere a sad, small piece of land
for toddlers who’ve hardly tasted life.
Every time we visit Australia you’ll find us
where weeds uncontrollably grow,
where there’s chaos caused by a riot of flowers,

silent witnesses of lives that once were.

Ergens aan de rand van die stad der doden
is een plek waar het onkruid welig tiert en
chaos heerst door overwoekering van bloemen,
struiken en van bomen. Een woeste schoonheid
waarin het een voorrecht is te dwalen en stil te staan
bij scheef gezakte stenen met half vergane namen.
Ik weet nog dat wij, de eerste keer dat wij er waren,
tot de ontdekking kwamen dat het geheel,
qua oppervlak en verscheidenheid gelijk is
aan een wereldstad, met nieuwe en met oudere wijken,
met secties ingedeeld naar land van herkomst
en religie, zo eigen aan een emigratieland.
Beroemdheden liggen er begraven en zij
die nauwelijks zijn gekend. Je vindt er mausolea
voor de rijken en simpele stenen voor hen die
minder zijn bedeeld. Er is een ereveld voor militairen
en zoals overal een triest klein stukje grond
voor hummeltjes die niet eens het leven konden smaken.
Iedere keer als we Australië bezoeken, gaan wij
naar die plek waar het onkruid welig tiert en
chaos heerst door overwoekering van bloemen,
struiken en van bomen. Een woeste schoonheid
waarin het een voorrecht is te dwalen en stil te staan
bij scheef gezakte stenen met half vergane namen,
stille getuigen van levens die eens waren.

BRAIDWOOD TOWN/CEMETERY SPIRIT BOX. NEW SOUTH WALES
While driving down to Merimbula from Queanbeyan, along the East Coast of Australia, we decided a stop over in Braidwood to visit their infamous bakery, which was in order.
While there we figured we'd explore it and do a little filming and visit their cemetery for a Spirit Box session.
Braidwood is nestled in Yowie country (Australia's BigFoot), the town boomed in the Gold Rush era and was known for blood thirsty bushrangers.

I worked here from 1971 till 1983, but never got to enter this building except the first room at lower level. The view from the balcony/verandah is an uninterrupted view of Sydney/Centrepoint. How did they know in 1884 that Centrepoint would be there?!!

Lidcombe Hospital (c.1884) vid.1 - 2011, Ward 7
Lidcombe Hospital (1884-1996) was used for the Olympics in 2000 as the Media Camp, then Australand purchased site, building hundreds of quality properties on the land (500 acres site) but being blocked from touching the historic hospital, until NOW!
The historic wards are being renovated into apartments, duplexes, so here we have ward 7 (Female Surgical) converted into a Duplex unit. Adjoining wards 6,5,4 are under renovation, and rest of the circuit (wards 16 to 19 , kitchens, training school etc are on list for conversion, along with the 1920's Nurses' Quarters buildings.
