[Escape] #62 - Study (1/2) || 999 (Interactive, 100%)
Part 62 of my interactive 100% playthrough of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on the Nintendo DS.
So, beyond that door in the Library lies the Study, the very room Zero used to elaborate all of his schemes. The room itself is beyond messy and includes a lot of puzzles, but we somehow still manage to get what we need. Here are some explanations about the puzzles found in this room.
The last puzzle will be explained in the next video because of description length issues.
—— The Chart Desk ——
This puzzle is found by investigating the compass on the side of the desk with a screen on it. However, you'll need the sea chart found on the drawing desk first to activate the puzzle. It's mostly the same thing as the sea chart puzzle found in the Chart Room. You must point the compass in the same direction the arrows on the upper screen (representing the itinerary of a boat) shows you. To move the compass, simply click on one of the arrows on the sides, and the same arrow again to stop. The current direction of the compass is indicated by the big red arrow on top of it. To make sure you stop at the right cardinal direction, it's recommended to stop the compass a little before the actual direction you want. The compass will automatically stop at the next valid direction, which should be the one you want. The path of arrows begin in England and finish in the southwest part of the USA. Reading the arrows in order, the directions are S, W, SE, NE, E, N, E. Input these directions in that order to solve the puzzle and claim the Helm Emblem and some morse code charts.
—— The Morse Code ——
This puzzle is found on the screen next to the Chart Desk puzzle. To solve it, you'll need the Morse Code Charts acquired from the previous puzzle. When you first investigate the screen, you'll be welcomed by 7 dots on 3 lines: 2 dots on the 1st line, 4 dots on the 2nd, and 1 dot on the 3rd line. These dots represent the number of inputs needed for each line, and each line represents a letter. So, you need to find a 3 letter word respecting these input criterias in morse code to continue. To help you in that task, you have the 3 Morse Code Charts, forming together the complete alphabet translation in morse code. You can flip through them by clicking on the red squares on the right. I suggest you start by writing down on a paper every possible letter for each line, then agencing them to deduce what the word could be. To input something, press once on the button to produce a dot, and maintain the button down for a longer period of time to produce a line. When you have found it, you'll be able to claim the Code Emblem.
—— The ALL Grid ——
This puzzle is found on the screen to the right of the main computer screen. It may be difficult to find because you don't actually see the screen. You'll start with a 3x3 grid, each one with a letter or a number on it. Two squares of the grid are grayed out. Between each square, there is a + sign. On the bottom and right sides of the grid, you'll find 3 squares spelling the word ALL, all of them red except for one. Finally, you have a chart on the upper screen explaining the numbering for a base-22 number system. You guessed it: this puzzle uses hexadecimal numbers. Each time you click on a blue or a gray square, the square you clicked on and the ones adjacent to it (not including diagonals) will turn from blue to gray and vice-versa. To solve the puzzle, you'll need the good squares activated so that each row and column of the 3x3 square added together equal to the letter associated to it (A=10 and L=21). The first thing to do should be to click on the two gray squares (or on the 5 for lazy people), so you can see what their actual numbers are. Then, convert the letters on the grid to actual numbers, and solve the puzzle on a piece of paper to determine which squares must be off. Once that is done, simply play with the grid until you obtain what you want. Doing so will eventually net you the Cross Emblem and unlock the coffin on the other side of the room.

A while back, a guy named Andrew reached out to me asking if I wanted to work on a secret project with Lowes. I'm a big fan of the store Lowes, so of course I said yes. Andrew came up with an awesome idea of a DIY escape room where two trade professionals, Grant Thompson (The King of Random) and myself would use our skills and experience to escape a set of rooms full of puzzles. Like I said, awesome idea :) That description was really about all we knew going into it. They intentionally kept us in the dark so we had to actually problem solve our way out of the room. A couple of months back, I found myself in Dayton Ohio, going through a giant wooden door, into a dark room.. and the door shut behind me. The video of how we did in the escape room is on the Lowes YouTube channel and you should DEFINITELY go watch it. As a way to bring some of the mystery to my own channel, I made a small puzzle box that could exist in an escape room. The idea evolved quite a bit after having gone through the DIY Escape Room and it ended up being a globe.
Check out the video above to see how I made a fun little puzzle game and see if it gives you some ideas for making your own escape room or table top puzzle game! Also, be sure to go check out the Lowes YouTube channel to see the DIY Escape Room video and a behind the scenes video about the whole project.
