With the most 100-year-olds in Britain, has Worthing cracked the secret to a long life
With the most 100-year-olds in Britain, has Worthing cracked the secret to a long life? Pensioners advise to drink wine, eat lobster and play table tennis
Joy Trussler is exhausted. She's just turned 100 and is getting over the birthday celebrations, which have made her bedroom look half-florist and half-party shop, with balloons and flowers everywhere.
'I feel as if I've won a competition or something,' she says. 'I've had two parties, three cakes and 32 cards, including one from the Queen.'
If reaching 100 is like winning a competition, it's a competition with an increasing number of winners.
In the past decade, the number of people aged 100 and over has risen by 65 per cent to 15,000 — 850 are aged 105, double the number ten years ago. And there are going to be many more. As the Lancet reported recently, average global life expectancy is increasing so quickly that by 2030, it could be 90 in South Korea and 85 in the UK.
It means the Queen's cards — sent to British subjects in the UK turning 100 or 105 and at every birthday after that — are being posted in their thousands.
And a lot are sent to one place: Worthing. The small seaside town in West Sussex has the highest proportion of centenarians in the UK, according to a recent report from the Office of National Statistics.
There are 26 alone in the tiny ward of Heene, which has only 8,000 residents.
Worthing's other residents are not surprised by the news. They call the town 'God's waiting room' and point to the fleets of mobility scooters whizzing along the seafront.
Joy, a former shoe saleswoman from Brighton, is one of Worthing's newest centenarians, having celebrated the milestone at the end of January at the nursing home where she lives. Worthing's Mayor, Sean McDonald, was at one of her parties — he goes to a lot of 100th birthday celebrations.
'Though they're all women,' he says. 'They seem to be better at getting to 100 than men.'
Joy's secret, she reckons, is a pint of Guinness a day. 'I've got a box of them there,' she says, gesturing behind her armchair.
'But I started having more than one a day, so I have a little less now.' Her love of flower arranging may be another factor, she thinks.
But another of Worthing's centenarians, Gladys Oughton, 104, has a different theory about what makes a long life: books.
'You can't let yourself get bored,' she says. 'I think you can reach 100 quite easily now. The key is to keep your brain healthy.'The secret of long life has long fascinated us — as have those communities that seem to enjoy such longevity.
Most recently this has been people living in Acciaroli, a tiny fishing village south of Naples in Italy, where last year a team of scientists spent six months studying, to work out why so many of the residents were living in almost perfect health into their 90s.
The researchers found they had unusually good circulation, as well as low levels of a hormone called adrenomedullin, which can impede circulation and is linked to heart failure.
But Acciaroli's centenarians had their own ideas about the elixirs of long life: espresso coffee, cowboy films and red wine with lunch.
They also ate a lot of rosemary (which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties) . . . and had 'rampant' sex lives, noticed the experts.
Though there have always been individuals who reach a grand old age, there are far more people worldwide managing it now, says Dr Frank Miskelly, a consultant physician at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
'There are lots of general reasons — clean water, exercise, general public health and hygiene. But you could ask 100 people how to live to 100 and you'd get 100 different theories.'

Appel Salon | Ben Macintyre | October 15, 2018
I'm often asked whether MI6 authorized this book. Whether they, you know, colluded with it. They didn't ... But, they didn't stop me from writing it. They didn't stop me from writing it in the way that I wanted to. Because I interviewed every one of the MI6 officers who ran Oleg [Gordievsky], over these dozen years, and they're all still alive, and they've all signed The Official Secrets Act which makes it, and what they did, illegal. They shouldn't have been talking to me. --Ben Macintyre
Ben Macintyre appeared at the Toronto Reference Library to discuss his new book The Spy and the Traitor with Michelle Shephard.

Pyestock NGTE urbex abandoned UK Industrial Urban Exploration
For over 50 years Pyestock was at the forefront of gas turbine development. It was probably the largest site of its kind in the world. V bomber, Harrier and Tornado engines were tested on site. The power of the air house allowed Concorde's engines to be tested at 2,000 mph. Every gas turbine installed in Royal Navy ships was checked here; captured Soviet engines were discreetly examined.
