Root River at Lanesboro, MN- Whitewater Canoeing Sep. 24, 2010
S.E. MN recieved 8-10 of rain on Sep. 23rd, 2010......it made for some REALLY gnarly water on the little Root River near Lanesboro. Everybody else was worried about the flood.....we thought it be a great day to go paddling! So we grabbed the cameras, a couple whitewater canoes and headed to the river.
The local police showed up at the put in and highly suggested we find a different afternoon activity....but let us go without to much fuss. We made it from Lanesboro to the HWY 16 take out in 17 minutes (normally a 3 hr tube ride).

Root River Triathlon - May 16, 2020
Register Now!
The Root River Triathlon is a “doable”, non-swimming triathlon set in Southeast Minnesota's Root River valley in scenic Bluff Country. Registration is open for individuals and teams.
The first triathlon was held in 1998 by the City of Houston. Participation is open to men and women of every age (Young people of 17 years and younger with the consent of their guardian!!)
Participants begin by canoeing or kayaking six and one-half miles down river from Houston to Mound Prairie where they then hop onto their bikes for an eight-mile road ride back to Houston. Some hills en route are challenging (% grade) and demand an extra effort. The race wraps up with a three-mile, fairly level run, starting on the Root River trail and then winding through the streets of Houston. The finish is at the Band Shell in beautiful Trailhead Park where the award ceremony will take place around noon.
Children and adults are also welcome and encouraged to check out Trailhead Park's Natural Playground. (Rocks to climb on, water feature, sand play area, labyrinth, slide, zip-line and more).

Minnesota Trout Fishing - 3/24/2019
There's some cussing here, so if that offends you, please don't watch. I had to jump the border and head south to find any fishable water. Met up with Shebs and was discouraged with the first spot, but we managed to find some pretty clear water. Water was 44 degrees. About 20 browns to hand here with some lost and some nippers. Bite was strong for about 2 hours. A nice big headed, fat 19 brown was the best fish of the day. Nice to not fish eskimo style :) Feb and March have been rough going. Happy Fishing!
Root River Spring Flood 2019
On March 15-16, 2019 the Root River in Southeast Minnesota crested after a significant snow melt and rain. This sent the river into a torrent and flooded much of the Root River Valley. All of the video clips contained were taken in either the Mound Prairie or Hokah area. The flood waters covered much of the valley from Highway 16 on the south to County Rd 21 on the north.
2013 Biking the Root River Trail with Road Scholar
This Road Scholar biking program was based in the delightful small Minnesota town of Lanesboro. Besides biking the Root River Trail and the harmony-Preston Valley Trail, we had 3 presentations related to live theatre and also attended a live play. Suppers at 4 local restaurants, a trolley tour of the town, and a hike in a nature center rounded out the week.
