Idar is a historical town in Sabarkantha district of north Gujarat, India. Recorded in epic history and ruled by Bhils and descendants of Maitraka of Vallabhi, its history traced back to the 7th century. The region was ruled by Rajput clans. Initially Parihar Rajput refounded Idar and ruled until its chief died in the second battle of Tarain in 1192. Idar then fell into the hands of a Koli named Hathi Sora who was succeeded by his son Samalio. The latter was killed by a Rathod prince named Sonangji, who occupied Idar, and became the founder of the dynasty of the Raos who ruled there for several generations. After numerous changes of fortune and many struggles with the Muslims rulers of Gujarat, the Raos had at last to leave Idar, and were, in 1728, succeeded by the Rathod dynasty from Marwar. They ruled Idar State for generations and became part of Mahi Kantha agency under British. On independence of India in 1947, Idar became part of Indian Union.

7 Wonders of India: Rani Mahal
Rani Mahal consists of arched chambers around an open courtyard that looks magnificent and is a welcome break from the typical architectures of Bundelkhand. Rani Mahal of Jhansi was actually the palace of Lakshmi Bai, Rani of Jhansi. Rani Mahal was built in the late 18th century. Located in the very heart of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, the palace has been the epicenter of the Great Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 in Bundelkhand region. Various plans for mutiny were hatched in this palace when the British Resident turned down the repeated efforts for reconciliation from Rani's side.

It is known for the manufacture of handmade wooden toys, tiles, its temples and various beautiful architectural monuments, including Gadh (Palace) of Idar, Roothi Rani Ka Mahal,Vajreshwari temple, Jain Temples, Shiva & Vishnu Temples and the temple where Raja Harishchandra got married, called as Harishchandra Ki Chouri. There are numerous Bawadis similar to the ones shown in movies like Paheli, etc. The market of toys in Idar is known as Kharadi Bazaar.
Idar is at the southern end of the Aravalli Range. Many temples of Lord Shiva are found in these mountains. In history, victory over the Idar state was considered as a difficult task. So, a famous folk song was mostly sung in traditional marriages Áme Êderio Gadh Ĵitya re aanand bhayo (We are very happy that we have captured Idar fort).
It was formerly the seat of Idar, a princely state of British India. The name Idar comes from an ancient legend. As per the legend there were two devils named Elva and Durg, who stayed in the hills of Idar. So people used to talk about the place as I-dar-chhe (meaning: there is fear), the name Idar has came from there.
