Living Root Bridge: Mawlynnong, Meghalaya
Visiting Mawlynnong's (Asia's cleanest village) beautiful, living root bridge. It is made by shaping aerial roots of living trees which are trained to grow & placed across the gap, until they take root on the other side. They are naturally self-renewing and self-strengthening. And can definitely carry the weight of many people, as you'll see in the video!

Living Root Bridge at Mawlynnong, Shillong – Marvel of human engineering in harmony with Nature
Living Root Bridge is the top tourist attraction in Shillong, Meghalaya. It is a brilliant example of human engineering, which is harmonious with Nature.
Monsoon presented a huge problem to indigenous Khasi tribes who found it difficult to cross the rain fed torrents of water. Bamboo bridges would rot and iron/steel was non-existent or expensive.
Around 200 years ago, village elders devised a unique nature-friendly solution. They guided young Rubber Fig (ficus elastic) roots to grow through the hollowed-out trunk (like a pipe) of Betel Nut (Areca nut) stem. These were placed across rivers and streams in dry season until the figs' roots attach themselves to the other side of the river.
Roots of Rubber Fig tree can securely clasp over rocks in the face of heavy soil erosion. The Betel Nut trunks served to guide the roots, and provide them with nutrients. Once the slender roots reached the other side of the bank, they were infused deep into the soil. Finally, mud, stones and sticks were added to complete the bridge. The process usually takes around 15-20 years.
The beauty of this engineering is that it takes little maintenance and grows stronger over time. It is surreal to walk over these bridges surrounded by cloud-kissing hills and tropical forest.
We bring you the most photographed single decker living root bridge situated in Riwai which is around 8 Kms from Mawlynnong, famed as “Asia’s cleanest village” and God's Own Garden. Shillong - Riwai – Mawlynnong – Dawki – Shillong is a great one day travel itinerary. From Riwai car park, the root bridge is a 100 steps, 15min trek.

Living Root Bridges | Mawlynnong, Meghalaya
Mawlynnong is a village in the East Khasi Hills district of the Meghalayastate, India. It is famous for having been dubbed Asia's cleanest village.
It comes under the Pynursla community development block and Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) constituency.
Mawlynnong is located 90 km from Shillong, along the India-Bangladesh border.
As of 2014, there are about 95 households in Mawlynnong. The literacy rate is 100%. Agriculture is the chief occupation of the local population, with betel nut being the main crop.
Mawlynnong is known for its cleanliness. The waste is collected in the dustbins made of bamboo, directed to a pit and then used as manure. The travel magazine Discover India declared the village as the cleanest in Asia in 2003, and the cleanest in India in 2005. The phrase has since caught on. Moasunep Kichu's documentary on the village, for instance, is called Asia's Cleanest Village.

Living Root Bridges and other Structures - Engineering and Design Overview
One of the wonders of North-East India is the technique developed by villagers to construct bridges and other structures out of living aerial roots of rubber (Ficus Elastica) trees. Most bridges and structures can be found in Meghalaya state, and lately root bridges were discovered in Nagaland state as well.
This film contains three parts:
Part 1 - 00:00 Introduction and quick tour.
Part 2 - 01:03 How does it work - A brief explanation how root bridges are made.
Part 3 - 02:57 Comprehensive tour of 13 bridges with structure analysis referring to civil engineering basic principles.
Part 4 - 10:33 Other structures - Root ladders and a root sitting platform

Meghalaya's double-decker root bridge is found in Cherrapunjee (Sohra). Located around 60 kms from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, Cherrapunjee is a must visit destination known for its numerous waterfalls and a trek to the double decker root bridge. The trek from Cherrapunjee to the living root bridge is not for the faint hearted but definitely worth the effort!!

Root Bridge at Mawlynnong in East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya, India
The whole idea of Meghalaya’s living bridges came into the picture some two centuries ago when veterans of Khasi clan living in Meghalaya put rubber tree roots into hollow canes of Areca nut palm that met halfway across the stream. The roots were nurtured and cared properly until they grew enough to reach the opposite bank, get completely entwined with each other, and make themselves capable enough to carry heavy weight.
The Living Root Bridges are made from rubber tree roots also known as Ficus elastica tree.
Some of the root bridges are over 100 feet long and take 10 to 15 years to attain the perfect shape.
Once fully grown, these roots last for as long as 500 years. While some of the roots decay because of their continuous association of water, others grow and make up for the decayed, thus providing the required stability to the bridge.Living Root Bridges in Meghalaya are recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Sites.

Living Root Bridges Man Made wonder ( Mawlynnong-Meghalaya)
My first ever Vlog which I am publishing on YouTube. Comments and inputs are more than welcome.
This was my first solo travel in India and as suggested by many I started with a NE state and thats Meghalaya. I ditched Diwali at home and went here instead in Oct 2017.
This was my last day ( 6th day ) in Meghalaya. It had been raining continously for a week and only this day it had stopped. This whole region is filled with other worldly beauty the waterfalls, the canyons, the greenery you name and its there.
Living root bridges are a form of tree shaping common in the southern part of the Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya. They are handmade from the aerial roots of Rubber Fig Trees (Ficus elastica) by the Khasi and Jaintia peoples of the mountainous terrain along the southern part of the Shillong Plateau. Root bridges have also been observed in the Indian state of Nagaland.
