The Battle of Rorke's Drift, also known as the Defence of Rorke's Drift, was a battle in the Anglo-Zulu War. The defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenants John Chard of the Royal Engineers and Gonville Bromhead, immediately followed the British Army's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, and continued into the following day.
Just over 150 British and colonial troops successfully defended the garrison against an intense assault by 3,000 to 4,000 Zulu warriors. The massive but piecemeal Zulu attacks on Rorke's Drift came very close to defeating the much smaller garrison, but were ultimately repelled. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours.
Sabaton - Rorke's Drift (Music Video)
In 1879, under the command of Lieutenant John Chard and Gonville Bromhead, a small company of British soldiers successfully defended the outpost at Rorke's Drift, a Swedish hospital and church, against an intense assault by almost 4,000 Zulu warriors. The massive Zulu attacks came very close to defeating the tiny garrison but were ultimately repelled.
When the Zulu's neared the mission station, a large number of allied militiamen jumped over the makeshift fortification and ran away in horror.
Left behind were only 150 British soldiers and some colonial settlers (Boer, Swedes, Irishmen, one Swiss and a Scot). Many of them were also sick and wounded.
Zulu warriors on top of Oskarsberg mountain fired their old muskets and aimed at the defenders.
At one point, the Zulu's managed to break into the hospital. The sick and wounded soldiers inside had to barricade the doors and hack their way out through the walls, at the same time as the roof was on fire. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours.
About 350 Zulu warriors were killed during the battle, with 500 wounded. The British on the other hand only lost 17 men, but the surviving soldiers all had some kind of injury.

The Battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift
Episode 13: No other place seems to have played as pivotal a role in the history of South Africa as that of KwaZulu-Natal. Specifically, the battlefields region around Dundee. All three powers of the early South Africa met here – the Boer and Zulu in the 1830s, British and Zulu during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, and British and Boer during the late 1800s/early 1900s. This area formed the meeting point between three nations’ territories – British Natal, Boer Transvaal and Zululand, home to the powerful Zulu nation.
We've have been interested in the early history of South Africa for quite some time. When we saw our route would lead us straight into the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields region we couldn’t resist a stop. We were given the opportunity to join the Fugitives’ Drift Lodge for tours of the Anglo-Zulu battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift.

Zulu - The True Story (Timewatch 2003)
A look at how the humiliating defeat at the battle of Isandlwana was played down while the small victory at Rorke's Drift, on the same day, was promoted by Victoria and Disraeli as the major engagement. The true story of the Zulu War is one of unprovoked slaughter, heroes ignored and the guilty protected - and the responsibility for this lies with those who lived above suspicion.

This is a re-upload as the original version had an error in it. Apologies for any confusion.
