CHINA: BEIJING: CATHOLIC'S EASTER CELEBRATIONS

Christians worldwide have been celebrating Easter.
But in China, the majority of the country's 14 (m) million Catholics are still unable to practise their religion freely.
Human rights groups say persecution of Catholics is common - with fears it will spread to Hong Kong when the country returns to Chinese rule next year.
It may be the world's most populous country but China's Catholics are still a tiny minority.
Just four (m) million residents are officially registered in the Church.
Following the end of the Cultural Revolution when religions were banned, Catholics are now able to practise their faith with the official Catholic Patriotic Association - set up by the Communist Party.
This church, Xuan Wu Men, built 90 years ago, is one of the oldest of the five-thousand officially registered churches.
But an estimated 10 (m) million Chinese still practice in underground churches loyal to the Pope and repressed by the authorities.
Catholicism was introduced to China by Italian Jesuit Priest Matteo Ricci, who founded Beijing's first Catholic church in 1583.
The Catholic Church suffered tremendously after diplomatic relations between China and the Vatican were broken in 1957.
Believers were ordered to renounce the Pope's religious authority and those who refused were jailed.
Followers were persecuted and churches destroyed.
But in the past decade the Beijing government has softened its attitude towards the Christian churches.
It no longer regards religion as the opium of the masses.

Actually, the Communist party doesn't care about what people believe in. People here are free on this. What it cares about is political issues. Everyone, every organisation, is involved in politics, that's why the Communist party must have control of politics. But regarding religious beliefs, the party doesn't care.

But critics say while the country's 1982 constitution may claim to guarantee freedom of religious beliefs, the state still controls religious life.
Religious organisations have recently reported the destruction of Catholic churches built illegally in the countryside and the arrest of nuns and priests.
In other areas peasants were said to have been tortured because they refused to practise contraception to comply with the government's one child policy.
Experts believe the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997 and Macao in 1999 will play an important role in determining the future of Catholic Christians in China.
Many Catholics in Hong Kong fear the persecution will spread with some religious leaders concerned Chinese authorities will not grant them freedom to worship.
But Reverend Sun at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Hong Kong remains confident China will respect religious freedom.

The Patriotic Church of Beijing says any concerns in Hong Kong are unjustified.

After Hong Kong is returned, we will have a policy called The three Mutuals, which is mutual respect, mutual non-interference, and mutual non-subordination. The Catholic Church of Hong Kong will never be switched into the same as that of the mainland.

It's believed that secret talks were held between the Chinese and Vatican representatives during the U-N Women's conference in Beijing last year.

Trading bread for steamed bun in temple-like church in Taiwan
With a cross rising from a red pagoda roof, and two lion statues guarding the entrance, a unique catholic church in southern Taiwan could easily be mistaken for one of the ubiquitous temples which dot the island. The Holy Spirit Church began as a simple wooden structure when it was built by a German missionary more than six decades ago, but in 1986 was rebuilt to incorporate typical Chinese temple features.

Hong Kong Museum of Art is currently closed when we visited Hong Kong and Avenue of Stars was included in our itinerary but it was veeery crowded :(
I highly recommend eating in Samki Noodles House in Tsim Sha Tsui and try their Ox Brisket Rice and Wan Ton Rice Noodles with their homemade chili oil for some authentic Chinese cuisine. It's at the back of Chungking Mansion and in front of Ichiran Ramen.
To save some money, do not throw your empty water bottles in Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park Hong Kong as they have drinking fountain inside.

《陳福善的世界》 The World of Luis Chan
Luis Chan was an eccentric Hong Kong genius who, as one of the first generation of Chinese modern painters, has become legendary in the history of Chinese contemporary art. The full corpus of Luis Chan’s work in his long artistic life is breathtaking in scope. Chan was born in Panama in 1905 to Cantonese parents, and settled in Hong Kong with his family in 1910. As a landscape painter from the late 1920s to 1960, Chan developed a lively English landscape style and used to go on painting expeditions around Hong Kong, sketching watercolours that captured the rich and varied life of the enclave.
By the late 1930s Chan had become known locally as the ‘King of Watercolour’ and was hailed as one of the ‘Three Masters’ of Hong Kong painting. In the 1950s, Luis Chan abandoned his orthodox style and entered a period of intense experimentation with a wide spectrum of international avant-garde styles, from Abstraction to Pop and Psychedelia.
In the late 1960s, Luis Chan underwent dramatic transformations in his visual rhetoric; inspired by the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong life, his landscape fantasies reach into the deep recesses of the subconscious collective mind of the city. This intensely idiosyncratic and creative outburst continued through the 1970s and 80s into a whole range of late paintings that are fantastic and cosmic in scope, with a wild visual logic all their own.
Luis Chan was also a widely published art critic and writer, a renowned social figure and a seminal catalyst in Hong Kong's art circle. From his first solo debut exhibition in 1933 until his final show in 1993, Luis Chan presented 47 solo exhibitions over his long career and published countless articles on modern art.

After we set up diplomatic ties with the Vatican, we will be able to strengthen our religious belief and the teachings of the doctrine. As for the politics, the Vatican should respect our country's sovereignty and respect the independence of our country as well as our church.

The Vatican should consider that it has more believers in mainland China. What it needs to do is only to break their political restraints. On the other hand, it won't have a big impact on Taiwanese believers because they will just consider the move a religious one. However, Chen Shui-bian may suffer from this.

Relations between Taiwan and Vatican will not have any change. Basically, Vatican is not a political body. The Vatican cares for believers' lives. As far as I'm concerned, the Vatican has been very satisfied with Taiwan's religious activities.

I think everyone knows that Vatican wants to normalise relations with China. But the problem is that the Chinese government has very tight control
over the religious freedom in China. It'll be very difficult for the Vatican to normalise relations with China if China can not improve its religious freedom. I expect in the short period of time, the religious freedom will not improve and that will become very important obstacle in normalising relations between the Vatican and China.

I think it's not news that the Vatican is ready to switch the diplomatic relationship from Taiwan to Beijing. And that's a very difficult decision because never in history the Holy See has abandoned a friend nation unilaterally. But then, if they want to improve the situation with the church in China, they have to make that step.

STORYLINE:
China has urged the Vatican to create conditions for better relations with Beijing under the successor to Pope John Paul II - an apparently pointed reference to the Vatican's continued ties with Taiwan.
The Vatican is the only European government that has official relations with Taiwan.
