Roscommon Town - Ireland
Roscommon Town is the County town of County Roscommon and is located approximately 30 km from Athlone and Longford, 80 km from Galway city and 140 km from Dublin.
Roscommon Town is situated at the intersection of the National Secondary routes N60, N61 and N63 and the Regional Road R366, and is served by the Dublin-Westport Railway line. Roscommon Town Rural and Urban population combined is 5840 (2006 Census) which is an increase of 9.8%.
The town is home to a number of buildings and features of historical and archaeological significance including Roscommon Castle and Abbey and the Old Roscommon Gaol (County Library). It is paradise for enthusiasts of water related activities with its close location to the River Shannon and the many lakelands. Roscommon has a very successful Arts Centre which hosts a dynamic and ambitious multi-disciplinary programme of events all year round. Roscommon also hosts a very modern race course with stand and reserved enclosures with regular meetings throughout the year.
Growth in the retail sector has been dramatic over recent years and Roscommon now boast almost all the major multiples aswell as many internationally recognized retail outlets. Roscommon has many high quality restaurants and hotels as well as many indoor and outdoor leisure facilities

St Coman's Church Roscommon Town Interactive Heritage Tour - POI 5*
Church of Ireland built in 1775 reputedly on the site of an Augustinian Abbey. A site of Christian worship since the middle of the 8th Century.

Former Prison, built in the 1730's-1740's. The architect is thought to be Richard Cassels. It is the reputed residence of Lady Betty the Merciless Hangwoman of Roscommon.

An Introduction to the Tour and details about a former Presbyterian Church built in 1863 which now serves as Roscommon's County Museum and Tourist Office. It is named after the Great Famine era doctor, Dr John Harrison.

Douglas Hyde Interpretative Center
Portahard Church and Interpretative Centre Church of Ireland was built in 1740 and restored in 1988 by Roscommon County Council. Its original function was preserved and an Interpretative Centre telling the life-story of Dr. Douglas Hyde (1860-1949) was installed. Dr. Hyde's contribution to modern Ireland is highlighted in the exhibition by the use of informative charts, maps and photographs. Through audio-visual material you can capture the spirit of his dream and celebrate the achievements of one life dedicated to one vision.
