The Rosewood Railway Museum Queensland 1992 Open Day
The Rosewood Railway Museum in Queensland is run by the Australian Railway Historical Society. This film was made from an old analogue video I took of an open day in 1992. It includes a cab ride and highlights the work of the volunteers who have made this museum successful.

Rosewood Railway Museum
If you head for a little place called Rosewood, tucked away in the Bremer River valley, the train is waiting for you on the last Sunday of each month. Rosewood is 50 kilometres west of the city of Brisbane and 18 kilometres west of Ipswich and is served by the electric train from Ipswich.
The town is home to the Rosewood Railway Museum that seeks to recreate the atmosphere of a typical Queensland branch line of the steam and early Diesel era. The Museum is an operating railway that includes a PB15 steam locomotive that hauls restored wooden carriages plus a variety of diesel locomotives and railmotors. The line is high in the hills above Rosewood so there are plenty of steep grades where the steam engine has to work hard.
The museum, part of the Australian Railway Historical Society Queensland Division, also has an extensive collection of restored carriages and wagons on display.
Trains run on the last Sunday of each month and the Museum is open as a static display on the other Sundays of each month. Cab rides in the vintage diesel locomotives are available around the main depot yard at Kunkala Station on running days.

On Sunday December 30 2003 I visited the Rosewood Railway Museum to travel along the short length of track behind veteran steam locomotive PB15 738 and several wooden carriages from Cabanda to Kunkala.
This operation is owned and operated by volunteer members of the Australian Railway Historical Society and operate on the last Sunday of each month.
The Rosewood Railway
A Brief History:
In late 1984 members of the Queensland Division of the ARHS began work rehabilitating some 3km of track on the former Marburg Branch in South East Queensland to establish a working railway museum. Construction of this branch line began in 1910 from Rosewood, which is 58km west of Brisbane on the mainline to Toowoomba. Suburban electric trains now terminate at Rosewood.
The steeply graded branch was opened to the terminus at Marburg, 14.5km to the north, in 1912 and was closed in sections from 1964 as the need for locomotive coal decreased. The much-truncated line continued to be operated as a 4km siding to Perrys Nob but this final section was closed in 1995.
Four years after starting work the Society held its first open day in 1988 and the Railway was officially opened on Australia Day 1993. Since then steam trains operated by PB15 Class No 738 have operated on the isolated section of track between Cabanda and Kunkala on the last Sunday of the month. Vintage rail motor, RM 55, Red Fred, continues to handle mid-week charter work. Two 60-ton branch line diesel electric locomotives, a diesel hydraulic and a diesel mechanical locomotive are also available as well as six carriages and numerous goods wagons.
Recent years has seen the restoration of C17 720 which has taken up duties while 738 is out for major overhaul

Rosie at Rosewood station
Pb15 steam loco on Rosewood Railway near Brisbane, Queensland
Taken somewhere around 2000, I was perched atop my van on top of a hill overlooking Cabanda Railway Station on the Rosewood Railway west of Brisbane. Pb15 738 saunters downhill from Kunkala to Cabanda with hardly a peep out of her until she nears the station and announces her impending arrival with a whistle. My grandkids were making more noise than the train, busily annoying each other despite being asked to keep quiet.
After arrival at Cabanda 732 uncouples, heads down the track to the water column for a drink before running around the train.
Finally we see 732 depart Cabanda and lift the relatively light train up the grade to Kunkala where the ARHS has it's collection of carriages and locos that forms their museum.
Steam trains run on the last Sunday of each month.

C17 720 - Rosewood Railway - 25th July 2010
The rain has fallen at the wrong time for the crew on C17 720 as the greasy rails make for a challenging run up the line between Cabanda and Kunkala on the Rosewood Railway.

I apologise for the shakiness of the footage; it turns out one of the carriage's wheels had a flat spot!
Train journey from Rosewood to Ipswich
Taking this trip by train is much faster than going by car, as you can see here.

Steam train to Toowoomba part 3 (Ipswich to Rosewood)
The journey started at 7:15am and ends at 12:10. This is a long trip. With the city far behind us and we leaving and head into the outer suburbs of Ipswich city council and we start to make a serious move west going into more isolated towns as we pass the walkuraka train sheds we move even further out to more farm style towns. We then have a short stop to allow the fire truck to get on the tracks behind us as we then continue to our final pick up stop of rosewood at the border of overhead wires.
