Washington Park, Anacortes, WA, USA
Beautiful views of Guemes Channel and Burrows Bay as seen from Washington Park and also the park's famous leaning tree (one of Washington state's most photographed tree) in the historic town of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington, USA during our trip on Sep. 3, 2011.
Washington Park is located on a peninsula at the western tip of Fidalgo Island. The 220-acre city park features camping, a boat launch, and day use picnic sites. The park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes, offering territorial views. A scenic 2.3-mile one-way loop road winds through the park's forested hills and meadows with views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. The park offers sweeping views of Guemes Channel on one side and Burrows Bay on the other.
At Sunset Beach, on the north shore, there is a boat launch, restrooms, reservable picnic shelter, playground and open play area. There are 75 campsites, restrooms, showers and laundry services in the overnight area. Picnic sites and car pullouts provide beach access along Green Point, the west shoreline. The loop road is used by cars, joggers, bicyclists and walkers.
Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan and Vancouver Islands. Downtown Anacortes has over 125 life-sized murals painted by local resident Bill Mitchell. He painted the murals over the last 25 years from historical photographs. His art is on display all over Downtown buildings with depictions of historic scenes. Pick up a free mural map at the Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue as it is a wonderful way to discover Anacortes.
Anacortes is located 18 miles west of Mount Vernon and about one hour drive from Bellingham to the north and Seattle to the south.
Driving directions to the park: From I-5 take Highway 20 West. Enter Anacortes on Spur 20 and take Commercial Avenue to 12th Street. Turn left on 12th and follow the signs (about 3 miles) to Washington Park.

Wonderful Bickleton Washington House
This house is for sale and please contact the Realtor for a viewing. More information to be added later.
Bickleton, Washington is called the Bluebird Capital of the world because of the thousands of bluebirds that spend most of the year in the area. The majority are Mountain Bluebirds with a few Western Bluebirds in or near the forest.
From the Bickleton website:
Although quite small (population 90), there are interesting events and places in or near town. Bickleton is home to the states oldest tavern, The Bluebird, and the states oldest rodeo. The next Pioneer Picnic And Rodeo will be the 105th annual. At the picnic and rodeo grounds is one of the west’s oldest carousels. A 1905 Herschell-Spillman. It is set up and used only on rodeo week-end, which is always the second week-end in June. It was purchased from Oaks Park in Sellwood, Oregon in 1929 and moved to Bickleton. Just 11 miles south of town is the Whoop N Holler Ranch and Museum where there are many interesting local antiques and old vehicles. About 17 miles south of town is 4th largest landfill in the country. Owned, by Allied Waste Industries, it provides much needed jobs and capitol for Klickitat County. The landfill gas created by the decomposing waste is used to generate over 8 megawatts of electrical power. A few miles south of town is the area’s first large wind power electrical generating plant. Good food is available at the Market Street Cafe and the Bluebird Inn.
SANDY...Atalntic City may be a direct hit! Sandy Bearing Down on Millions on East Coast.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday ordered the evacuation of 375 000 people in low-lying areas threatened by Hurricane Sandy.
This is a serious and dangerous storm, Bloomberg told a news conference as he ordered the mandatory evacuation ahead of the storm which is expected to start hitting on Monday.
Airlines have cancelled hundreds of flights into airports along the US east coast ahead of the arrival of a major storm, authorities said Sunday.
Air France cancelled all flights into New York and Washington on Monday while US airlines have called off hundreds of domestic flights. New York airports were to stay open on Sunday but the airport authority warned passengers to expect disruptions.
New York authorities ordered the subway, commuter trains and buses to close on Sunday ahead of the arrival of a feared super-storm.
The New York subway and regional buses will stop from 7pm state governor Mario Cuomo announced as he warned that the impending storm was not something to be taken lightly.
Frankenstorm
Hurricane Sandy shadowed the east coast of the United States on Sunday, raking the Carolinas with stinging rains and high waves as authorities braced for the potentially devastating Frankenstorm days before the US elections.
The looming superstorm played havoc with the US presidential race, with Barack Obama and Mitt Romney both cancelling campaign events and scrambling to rearrange schedules with the November 6 polls just nine days away.
President Barack Obama moved up a campaign trip to Florida Sunday so he could be back in Washington when the storm makes landfall, predicted for early Tuesday somewhere between Virginia and Massachusetts.
At 1200 GMT, the storm was 420 kilometers southeast of Cape Hateras, North Carolina, packing sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.
Sandy earlier claimed at least 66 lives in the Caribbean, most of them in impoverished, quake-ravaged Haiti where 51 people were reported killed.
Though still far out at sea, the storm was already making its presence felt on US territory, spinning off high winds and seas for hundreds of miles around.
Television images from North Carolina's Outerbanks, a chain of low lying barrier islands, showed wild surf and pelting wind-driven rains that offered a foretaste of conditions to come further north.
The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) warned residents to expect life-threatening storm surge flooding to the Mid-Atlantic coast, including Long Island Sound and New York Harbour.
At the National Weather Service, forecasters warned the storm would result in significant impacts along coastal North Carolina beginning late Saturday.
Current projections show the storm making landfall early Tuesday on the coast of Delaware at near hurricane strength, then bending north and inland as it merges with a cold front descending from Canada.
Weather experts say that collision of a rain-laden tropical storm with a cold front is an explosive mix, creating a super-charged weather system bringing floods, high winds and even heavy snow across a swath of eastern states and as far inland as Ohio.
Nor'easter on steroids
Anticipating the worst, governors declared states of emergency in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, the US capital Washington and a coastal county in North Carolina.
This is a large storm that is forecasted to impact the Mid-Atlantic and other parts of the East Coast with strong winds, coastal flooding, inland flooding, rain and snow, said Craig Fugate, head of the US Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Sandy will be more like a large nor'easter on steroids, wrote Alex Sosnowski, a senior meteorologist for Accuweather.com, who said it could lead to billions of dollars in damage.
In Delaware, Governor Jack Markell issued an evacuation order, urging coastal residents and those in flood-prone areas to leave their homes and to stay safe.
Please take this evacuation order seriously. It will help save lives of both residents and first responders, he said in a message on Twitter.
New Jersey also ordered evacuations for its southern coastline, including Cape May and Atlantic counties and Long Beach Island. The governor also ordered all gambling shut down in beach-side Atlantic City starting at 3pm on Sunday.
Tolls were suspended on the northbound and westbound lanes of the state's major highways to help residents leave more quickly

The tendency is for everyone to become a flexible, adaptable resource
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is an African-American civil rights organization in the United States, formed in 1909.[3] Its mission is to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.[4] Its name, retained in accordance with tradition, uses the once common term colored people.
The NAACP bestows the annual Image Awards for achievement in the arts and entertainment, and the annual Spingarn Medals for outstanding positive achievement of any kind, on deserving black Americans. It has its headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.
The NAACP's headquarters is in Baltimore, with additional regional offices in California, New York, Michigan, Colorado, Georgia, Texas and Maryland.[6] Each regional office is responsible for coordinating the efforts of state conferences in the states included in that region. Local, youth, and college chapters organize activities for individual members.
In the U.S., the NAACP is administered by a 64-member board, led by a chairperson. The board elects one person as the president and one as chief executive officer for the organization; Benjamin Jealous is its most recent (and youngest) President, selected to replace Bruce S. Gordon, who resigned in March 2007. Civil Rights Movement activist and former Georgia State Senator Julian Bond was chairman until replaced in February 2010 by health-care administrator Roslyn Brock.[7]
Departments within the NAACP govern areas of action. Local chapters are supported by the 'Branch and Field Services' department and the 'Youth and College' department. The 'Legal' department focuses on court cases of broad application to minorities, such as systematic discrimination in employment, government, or education. The Washington, D.C., bureau is responsible for lobbying the U.S. government, and the Education Department works to improve public education at the local, state and federal levels. The goal of the Health Division is to advance health care for minorities through public policy initiatives and education.
As of 2007, the NAACP had approximately 425,000 paying and non-paying members.[8]
In 2011, the NAACP teamed up with the digital repository ProQuest to digitize and host the NAACP's archives, which includes over 2 million pages of internal memos, legal briefings and direct action summaries from national, legal and branch offices throughout the country — charts NAACP's work and delivers a first-hand view into crucial issues: lynching, school desegregation, and discrimination in the military, the criminal justice system, employment, and housing, among others.[9] Modules are being added on a continual basis, with the NAACP Papers: Special Subjects being released in March 2014.
In 1905, a group of thirty-two prominent African-American leaders met to discuss the challenges facing people of color and possible strategies and solutions. They were particularly concerned by the Southern states' disfranchisement of blacks starting with Mississippi's passage of a new constitution in 1890. Through the early 1900s, legislatures dominated by white Democrats ratified new constitutions and laws creating barriers to voter registration and more complex election rules. Black voter registration and turnout dropped markedly in the South as a result. Men who had been voting for thirty years in the South were told they did not qualify to register.
Because hotels in the U.S. were segregated, the men convened in Canada at the Erie Beach Hotel[11] on the Canadian side of the Niagara River in Fort Erie, Ontario. As a result, the group came to be known as the Niagara Movement.
The Race Riot of 1908 in Abraham Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Illinois, had highlighted the urgent need for an effective civil rights organization in the U.S. This event is often cited as the catalyst for the formation of the NAACP. Mary White Ovington, journalist William English Walling and Henry Moskowitz met in New York City in January 1909 and the NAACP was born.[14] Solicitations for support went out to more than 60 prominent Americans, and a meeting date was set for February 12, 1909. This was intended to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln, who emancipated enslaved African Americans. While the meeting did not take place until three months later, this date is often cited as the founding date of the organization.

Local NAACP Joins National Journey for Justic
Local activists here in Chattanooga are joining a national march to ask for equal rights.
Monday, Tennessee's NAACP left the Scenic City to head to Athens Georgia to walk one leg of America's Journey to Justice march.
The official national march goes from Selma, Alabama to Washington DC to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.
The local NAACP will join the national march Tuesday in Athens, Georgia to walk just 20 of the 860 mile walk.
Tomorrow we will be marching with others who have marched all the way from Selma and our national president and with our staff people and will be marching down the highway, Tennessee NAACP President Gloria Sweet-Love said. We'll be putting our souls on the road.
Tennessee's NAACP says voter identification laws keep many African Americans from exercising their right to vote.
2 years ago, they say a provision to the existing law restricted who can vote if someone doesn't have proper I.D. at the polls.
We saw in 2013 when the Supreme Court cut out those very basic provisions that it almost made it ineffective in South and we feel that should be restored, Sweet-Love said.
It's not just about voting rights. For some, the march is a personal journey to fight for loved ones. 12-year-old Joshua Church says he lost his uncle to the prison system.
He's a good guy, I know he did somethings that were wrong, but he's tried to change, he said.
He wants Washington to review policies on private prisons in Tennessee. He thinks the so-called 90% rule which requires states to reach a quota of prisoners keeps inmates incarcerated for longer than they deserve.
90% of that jail has to stay occupied for 20 years so basically keeping people in jail for as long as they can, Church said.
Tuesday, they'll be in Athens to walk. The goal to demand equality for everyone.
As long as there are injustices and as long as there are ways to make things better, we'll keep going and going, Ludye Wallace, the NAACP Nashville Branch President said.
In the last presidential election, only 29% of Tennesseans turned out to vote.
Some of the worst numbers in the nation.
Our state's NAACP thinks it's a national problem and they hope to get Washington's attention during the march.
About 70 people from across the state are on the bus. The national march in Washington is September 16.

SUMMARY
=======
New York's 3rd congressional district is a congressional district for the United States House of Representatives in the State of New York. It is represented by Democrat Tom Suozzi, who has been in office since 2017.
The district includes most of the North Shore of Long Island. It expands from northwestern Suffolk County, across northern Nassau County and into far northeastern Queens. Long Island communities in the district include Manhasset, Huntington, Northport, Commack, Dix Hills, Plainview, Bethpage, Hicksville, Syosset, Glen Cove, Roslyn, Port Washington and Great Neck. Queens neighborhoods in the district include Little Neck, Whitestone, Glen Oaks and Floral Park.
From 2003 to 2013, the district included southwestern Suffolk County and the eastern half of Nassau County, with some parts as far west as Island Park and Long Beach. Much of this area is now the 2nd congressional district; in effect, former Democratic U.S. Representative Steve Israel traded district numbers with Republican Peter T. King.
The Moorish Tower of Druid Hill Park Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Rosslyn Chapel
The Moorish Tower in Druid Hill Park Baltimore sits at an interesting point on the earth. Its octagonal plan points an azimuth on the globe that defines the Northwest boundaries of Washington D.C. The opposite heading leads the way to Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. Druid Hill and the Moorish Tower may have been created in a tradition whose adherent include Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Von Humboldt, as well as the builders of the octagonal Powder Magazine in Williamsburg and the Newport Tower. These architectural schemes may reveal a great deal of hidden information about those that created them and their impact on the development of the United States of America.
Songs of New York State - a live concert with Dave Ruch
Going through some piles of old recordings recently, I discovered this video from a September 2008 performance in Fort Edward NY for the Washington County Historical Society. I think enough time had passed since the event that I was able to watch it with fresh eyes and ears, and it seemed like there was some value here, or at least that it might be fun for some other music and history lovers to watch. This is one of my favorite types of performances to do, and the audience (as you will see) was fantastic.
The music and stories touch on many different facets of earlier life in New York State, including the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee), British trading, the jews harp, migration from New England to Central NY and Western NY, agriculture, the Erie Canal, the Great Lakes sailors, Buffalo NY, social dance and square dance, the Adirondacks, North Country, American Revolution, the War of 1812, Essex County NY, Washington County NY, the Battle of Plattsburgh, Edna West Teall, kitchen hops, song collecting, New York Seaport, NYC and more.
THE MUSIC:
0:08 Down on the Farm
7:27 Wisconsin (aka Away to Wisconsin, The Rolling Stone, The Wisconsin Emigrant)
13:12 Oh! Dat Lo Bridge! (Erie Canal song)
23:04 Mandolin Medley: Juba 'Round the Kettle of Fat/Uncle Abe's Tune from Ermina Pincombe
27:29 The Dying British Soldier
35:05 New York Girls or Can't You Dance the Polka
40:20 Washington County song
46:11 Roslyn Castle
53:20 Cabbage Head (aka Our Goodman or Child Ballad #274)
You'll find lots of stories about the music in the spoken introductions preceding each piece.
If you enjoyed any part of this, or have something to contribute, I'd love to hear from you!
