History
The Traveller's Rest Hotel was built in 1839 and until the late 1840s it was the only building that constituted the Report generated 06/11/17 settlement of Little River. On 9 January 1852 the hotel was burned to the ground and William Perrin rebuilt the
building in 1853, after which it appears to have been known as the Rothwell Inn. (Oct 1999, VC)
The Rothwell Inn, was originally called the Travellers Rest, and was constructed in 1839, on the road between Geelong and Melbourne, at one of two water crossings on the route. By 1840 it was described as a commodious dwelling house of 10 rooms (Port Phillip Gazette 1840). Up until the 1850s, the Travellers Rest
was the township of Little River, except for the stations of North and Glass. In 1862, the township of Rothwell was proclaimed. The Ashby Family took ownership of the Inn and was managed by Thomas Hobbs. With the announcement of the railway line between Geelong and Melbourne, interest grew in obtaining town lots. However, the line and station moved half a mile north, resulting in the shift in interest. During the 1860s land was sold for farming, but in the 1880s the population dropped from 1500 to 145. The township was never created, but the hotel continued, through to the 1950s when it was burnt out. It covered an acre. It had been burnt in 1852 and rebuilt in 1853. (31/10/01, FW) This place/object may be included in the Victorian Heritage Register pursuant to the Heritage Act 1995. Check the Victorian Heritage Database, selecting 'Heritage Victoria' as the place data owner.

Mt Rothwell Sanctuary and Conservation Area
The Rothwell Sanctuary's situated on the eastern slopes of the You Yangs, only about 30 minutes from Melbourne. Completely predator-proof-fenced, it's a huge rocky outcrop and area of grassland and forest with commanding views of Melbourne in the distance. Herein are most of the remanining few hundred mainland Eastern-barred Bandicoots in Australia. Decades ago, they were salvaged from a remote site in country Victoria and it's only because of the work of the Rothwell Sanctuary that they still exist today. We saw several during the evening. It rained as we arrived. As we were donning coats and even before we'd passed through the gate, a Southern Brown Bandicoot bounded across the road just inside. Little River Falls in Snowy River National Park
The Snowy River National Park boasts some really spectacular scenery including views of rugged mountain ranges, river scenes and a couple of Victoria’s best kept secrets; Little River Gorge and Waterfall. Gippsland High Country Tours offers a number of guided nature tours to this area including a birdwatching tour. In autumn 2012, when our small group of birdwatchers arrived at Little River Falls, we found the waterfall really rushing after some recent rain around the Cobberas area in the headwaters of Little River. I could not resist capturing the rush of water in a video. This area is great for discovering wildlife and led by a local guide you get to share their knowledge about flora and fauna plus local history. Come and share the Snowy River experience with us! Devine house ruins Little River
This was the home of John and Mary Ann Devine possibly also know as Margaret?
Built in the 1870's the farm covered 480 acres.
John was born in 1846 and died on the 15th Feb 1903 at the age of 57.
He held the seat of Little River for 26 years and after retiring and for health reasons suffering Asthma he moved to Clifton Hill.
Their son Hugh later known as Sir Hugh Devine became one of the leading surgeons in Australia.
He was born in 1878 and died at the age of 81 in 1959.
In his obituary 20th of July 1959 he was recognised as one on the best surgeons in the world.
