HOLLAND: Rotterdam city (arrival by train at Blaak Station)
Arrival in Rotterdam (1:30), Cube houses (2:00), central library (2:56), Market Hall (3:57), Erasmus Bridge (6:04), Central Station (7:34)
The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War 2 has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe.
Cube houses are a set of 40 innovative houses built in Rotterdam, designed by architect Piet Blom. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a show cube, which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of it. The houses contain three floors. The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.
The Market Hall is a residential- and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The inside of the building is painted with a 11.000 m2 artwork of Arno Coenen, named 'Hoorn des Overvloeds'. The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects.
The Erasmus Bridge is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The southernmost span of the bridge has an 89-metre-long (292 ft) bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in Western Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.
Rotterdam Central Station is the main railway station in Rotterdam. A total reconstruction of the station and its surroundings started in 2004 to cope with an increasing number of trains, for example the high-speed train between Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. The current station building, located at Station Square, was officially opened in March 2014.

Rotterdam Bridge Run 2019 - Bruggenloop
The Bridgerun in Rotterdam (Bruggenloop) was a great event with some beautiful sights of Rotterdam on the course. Amazing views from the bridges and great encouragement along the sidelines made for a great race.
The run was in the late afternoon, so we finished at dusk, but were lucky to stay dry since the forecast was for rainy and windy weather.
So all in all a great run with 11.000 participants

Netherlands: Haarlem, Alkmaar, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Gouda, Maastricht
Presenting a tour of the Netherlands
0:00 Introduction ; 03:26 Haarlem; 04:31 Alkmaar; 05:45 Leiden; 06:38 The Hague; 07:48 Delft; 08:54 Rotterdam; 10:11 Utrecht; 11:35 Gouda; 12:22 Maastricht ; 13:43 Conclusion
Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.
This video is a summary of the trip through the Netherlands. We will be presenting short segments about each city here, but we have 22 movies providing a lot more details about these places so be sure to look for them in our collection.
See the 23 Dutch movies here:
Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.
Rotterdam Tweedride 2015
NEXT TWEEDRIDE IS IN BREDA ON SUNDAY MAY 28TH 2017!
For more info go to: tweedride.nl
After the successful previous editions in Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht, the cavalcade of well-dressed, and often mustachioed, gentlemen and elegant ladies will bring the sartorial bike ride to the pearl of the south.
The Tweed Ride was founded in 2009 on Savile Row in London, the heart of classical men’s fashion and home to the best tailors in the world. Love of tailoring, the finest tweeds, along with (vintage) bicycles and paraphernalia brought together a mixed cohort that, fuelled by cups of tea, made its way through the city. Meanwhile, now all over the world comparable ‘rides’ and ‘runs’ are organised. And of course, Breda could not be left behind!
The bike ride is quite the sight to behold. To the delight of the public and press, a sartorial strut of round about 150 ladies and gentlemen make their way through the city to a splendid picnic spot where the gents and ladies can indulge in cucumber sandwiches and tea and scones, accompanied by the authentic sounds of an old crank gramophone.
Upon retrieving the starting permit, participants will also receive a dandy linen bag (musette) with a few sandwiches, refreshments and more stylish goodies provided by the sponsors. At the finish of the Breda Tweed Ride, several prizes will be awarded in multiple categories, including, finest tweed outfit, most original old bike, shiniest shoes, and best groomed ‘handle bar mustache’! Tally ho

Rebuild Rotterdam Run Running Crew
My first run with the Rotterdam Running Crew was last weekend. They organised the 'Opbouw Run' or the Rebuild Rotterdam Run. To remember that Rotterdam started rebuilding the city after it was bombed in 1940 during WWII.
This run took us straight through the center of Rotterdam passed a lot of sights and spots that were rebuild after the bombing.
Running through Rotterdam is always a treat and even though I just did a run there with the Urban Trail, this was a completely different area.

Trip Clips Ep 47 - Netherlands Stops Promoting Tourism
In this episode of Trip Clips, Don discussed the latest news in the growing trend towards countries, cities and sites that are trying to limit tourism. After instituting a tourist tax, the Netherlands has stopped promoting tourism.
Leiden walking tour, Netherlands
We’re in Leiden, Netherlands. enjoying the pleasures of this beautiful town. It's another one of the great historic cities of the Netherlands, most famous perhaps for the University. It's the oldest university in the Netherlands, founded back in the mid-16th century and so there's a lot of university students here. And it's not as touristic, certainly not nearly as crowded, as a place like Amsterdam, which is only about 1/2 an hour away by train.
So it's really a refreshing change to come and visit smaller cities like Leiden. This city has got the canals running through it, as most Dutch cities do. And here it's really quite special, the canals come right through the middle of the old town.
There's half a dozen of these very peaceful waterways, especially nice in the morning, busy in the afternoon with lots of people out walking around shopping, eating and drinking.
During the program you will get a good look at most of the interesting parts of Leiden. I'll take you on a thorough walking tour, we will go down some of the main lanes, the little back lanes, side lanes. We will see the University and its botanical gardens. We will walk along canals and we'll just show you this town inside and out.
Starting in this central part of the city, probably the most attractive and popular place to spend time, where the Old Rhine canal and New Rhine canal come together.

Running Tour of Vlaardingen
I've been planning to give a tour of Vlaardingen for a long time now, so it's about time this running tour was made. I often run in the outskirts of Vlaardingen where there are nice green areas, but today it is straight through the center of town.
Some history of Vlaardingen, some of my history with Vlaardingen and the most famous sights of the city all in one 14 minute tour. It took me a little longer tot run it of course, but in a course of 10K you can see most of the city's sights. No broekpolder where I normally run though, but I got some park in with of course plenty of animals.

Rotterdam Blaak
- In the Blaak area you can see modern architecture with the famous cube houses as one of the highlights. The first thing that you will notice is the underground train and metro station the Blaak. The station has got a very striking design and looks like a flying saucer. Just outside the station you will see the city's main library which got a very valuable Erasmus collection. The design of the library with the steel tubes running down along the glass front looks a little bit like the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Next to the library you will find the Pencil tower designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom, very well known for the design of the cube houses next to the tower. The Pencil tower is a six-sided tower just like a pencil. For more information on the Blaak area or other sights in Rotterdam please visit

Alkmaar Cheese Market in The Netherlands
Alkmaar in the Netherlands has the world’s biggest, most-visited and best cheese market, There is no prettier or more characteristic Dutch sight than this cheese market, with these guys in white running around carrying these big loads of cheese back and forth. What is going on? You are about to find out.
For centuries the cheese market has been important for the city of Alkmaar and in recent years it has developed into one of the leading visitor attractions in the country. It's an easy day trip from Amsterdam, just about 40 minutes away by train or by guided tour on a bus.
Alkmaar is much more than just cheese. It's a typical small Dutch city which means it has many historic, well-preserved buildings and beautiful canals lots of shops, restaurants, cafés and pedestrian lanes to stroll on. We will see more of the town in a different segment but for now we are focusing attention on the wonderful cheese market.
Almost 700 years ago, Alkmaar was already a cheese town. In 1365 the city was granted weighing rights and got their first cheese scale -- in 1612 this number of scales increased to four.
Over time, the cheese market frequently needed more space. Markets were the economic engine in those days, so houses were sometimes demolished to increase market space. Over the course of two centuries, it was enlarged no fewer than eight times before reaching its current dimensions.
Alkmaar's status as the cheese capital has become increasingly famous over the years and the cheese market became ever more popular, and now it’s the biggest in the country.
In the past, most cheese was transported by boat or horse. And this centuries-old tradition has survived in part to this very day. During every market, cheese laden boats sail from the North Holland Canal to the square, just as they did in the past.
The market is on every Friday from the end of March through September and during July and August it also functions on Tuesday evenings.
The cheese workers are members of the cheese guild, like a union, and they’re divided up into teams as shown by their hat colors, blue, yellow, red and green.
The overall manager is called the Cheese Father and he wears an orange hat.
We had a chance to speak with an official of the group who helped describe the situation for us
My position, is I was the Cheese Father of this guild for many years and now I am the tourist guide.
We’ll hear more from Kees Koopman during the program.
Right before 10.00 AM everyone waits for the market to get under way as the lady speaker welcomes visitors in as many languages as possible. She tells the general public about what they’re about to see at the market.
In a few minutes the bell is ringing and the market is starting.
At 10 am the bell rings (bell sound). It’s the sign indicating the start of the cheese market. The ringing of the bell is often done by a visitor to the market, at the invitation of the council of Alkmaar. For example it might be a famous Dutch person from sports or TV, or a foreign ambassador.
As soon as the market opens, the samplers and traders go to work. Inspecting cheese is more than just looking at its exterior. Cheese is knocked on and a special cheese scoop is used to obtain a piece, which is then crumbled between the fingers and smelled. And, naturally, it is tasted to assess the relation between taste, and the percentages of fat and moisture.
Many lucky people in the audience get a free taste and some of them even get to push that coring tool into the cheese, it's something like an apple corer and pull out a sample for themselves
It will come as no surprise that everybody will have a chance to purchase as much cheese as they want from the vendors who are surrounding the cheese market area — you'll see more of that coming right up.
Cheese is transported on the wooden barrow hanging between two cheese carriers, holding about 8 Gouda cheeses, each of them weighing 13,5 kilos. Carrying a heavy barrow, with a total weight of about 130 kilos.
Walking with that heavy barrow or stretcher appears much easier than it seems. But there is a special technique. In order to facilitate the walking rhythm and to prevent the stretcher from hitting their legs, the men walk 'out of step' in the strange looking cheese bearers' trot. This keeps the stretcher movement to a minimum, ensuring the barrow hangs as still as possible.
[Music plays]
We work you see with four groups, you see four different colors. Each group is seven people. There are six carriers and the seventh works on the scale – that is a very important man because in the early days, he counts the money from the buyers, the ones who have trade, for each kilo that we carry.
We've got the two big factories here in the north of the Netherlands and they make millions of kilos of cheese each year, and it goes around the world.

4K Cab Ride NL Amsterdam CS - Baarn - Amsterdam CS / SPR 15851 + 52 / 15-12-2019
Hi all! Today it's time for a sort of special video. Because of construction works between Amersfoort and Baarn there were no sprinter services running between Baarn and Amersfoort. All sprinters from Amsterdam ended their trip in Baarn and then returned to the capital city. And that's what we are doing in this video.
We depart perfectly on time from Amsterdam. On our departure you can see Ruben (Service Employee at that time) taking a video of our train. We depart perfectly on time (as usual). Just after Amsterdam you can see loads of DDAR and DDM1 carriages waiting at the Dijksgracht. They are waiting for a new owner and if that won't happen all trains will be demolished.
At the day this video was recorded the last DDM1 made its farewell ride through the country. Many spotters and other interested people attended the tour. And while that was going on the rest of the trains were shunted to the Dijksgracht as you can see on this video.
On our way to Baarn the tracks are getting pretty slippery just after departure in Weesp. A little late because of an IC that was passing by. Because of the slippery tracks we aren't able to get back on our schedule until our final stop.
On our arrival in Baarn the tracks lead us to platfrom number 1. This platform is not in use during a normal day and because of that the track is very rusty. This could cause problems with the detection of the train for the train dispatcher. This is why we get to drive on sight on that track.
After turning the train to the other direction we start our journey back to Amsterdam. And yes, I felt like doing some of the announcements as well. That's why I took over the computer voice in the train and announced Weesp and our final stop manually.
If you have any questions regarding the video then please let me know in the comments below. Have a good weekend y'all! Cheers!
