ROTTNEST ISLAND PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA
QUOKKAS
Rottnest has a checkered past, being a former Aboriginal penal settlement and a prisoner-of-war camp, but it is a truly beautiful, fascinating island, 11km by 5km, and a great day trip by boat from Perth, West Australia.
My good friend Don and I spent a great day on Rottnest Island, 20 km off the Perth coastline.
We had a great ferry ride over, $40.00 return, 25 minutes and all was looking well, at least that is what I thought. You see, we decided that I should rent a bike, $20.00 a day, to explore the island's well paved, traffic free roads. Don took his Sunrise Medical Quickie P222, a toxic green coloured wheelchair capable of 11 kph, with a range of 45 km.. I did get a 10 speed bike and as the trip (race) started out easy, amidst hordes of eager cyclists, so did the ride. That is until I hit my first hill and Don powered up at 11 kmh shouting Big Beaver Bill, get a move on. But my butt was really getting sore, really soon and was just about mush by the time we had finished, after a four hour circuit of 40 kms. I guess there is a moral to this day besides no pain, no gain. Don could have slowed down. I was walking like a bowlegged cowboy. Perhaps it is as simple as this. If you are going to spend the day, riding 30 kms flat out on a bike, get some trial runs in first or you will be doing a lot of standing in the weeks to come.

Rottnest Island Old Tram
The train / tram was originally devised as a means of transporting munitions to the guns on top of Oliver Hill. Set out for a guided exploration of the Rottness Island Fortress to tour bunkers and underground tunnels and gaze into the barrel of a massive 9.2-inch (23.4 cm) Mk X gun. Along the way, listen as your guide shares insight into the island's military history – it served as an internment and work camp for suspected enemies during both World Wars.
Today, that dark chapter of the island's history is decidedly closed, and Rotto is a favourite destination for beach-goers, wildlife lovers and sun-seekers from the mainland.

Best Places to visit in Australia: ROTTNEST ISLAND 2019
Discover the best attractions and activities Rottnest Island has to offer.
Just 19 km off the coast of Perth City, but an entire world away, lies the sunny holiday island of Rottnest, blessed with a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery, dazzling marine life and some of the world's finest beaches and pristine bays.
Rottnest Island earned its curious name when in 1696, Dutch explorer, Willem de Vlamingh, mistook the island's unusual marsupial population for common rats and named it Rottnest - literally translating to 'rats’ nest'. Today, having a photo taken alongside the 'rats', known as Quokkas, is one of the main attractions for visitors to the island.

Find out about the 80-100m deep site West of Rottnest, and the aerial surveys, technical diving and remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) that have been revealing more about the area.
ROTTNEST ISLAND WA EARLY SHIPWRECKS AND LIGHT HOUSES WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Rottnest Island shipwrecks
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following list of shipwrecks off Rottnest Island (32°0′S 115°31′E / -32, 115.517) shows twelve larger and surveyed wrecks close to the island, which is off the Western Australia coast.
Since the first Europeans visited the west coast of Australia in the 16th century, Rottnest has seen numerous recorded shipwrecks. The 11 kilometre long and 4.5 kilometre wide island is surrounded by hidden and partly exposed reefs whilst being buffeted by the Roaring Forties. It is situated 12 km west of the port of Fremantle meaning that much of the maritime traffic to Western Australia's major port passes close by.
Details on every shipwreck at the island are unknown as many thousands of vessels of varying size visit the island each year. Other ships have been lost in waters further off-shore including some closer to Fremantle. Still others were stranded on rocks at Rottnest but were re-floated. The Anitra II is in this latter category but is included in the list as the hull is on display on the island near the main settlement.
All of the wrecks are protected under Commonwealth legislation in the Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976) and State legislation in the Maritime Archaeology Act (1973). Plaques have been located next to the wrecks as well as onshore to indicate their locations.
Lighthouses
The first stone lighthouse built in Western Australia was completed in 1849 and built in the centre of the island.[1] The 20 m tower was replaced in 1896 with a new tower as the current Wadjemup Lighthouse.
Following an inquiry after the City of York disaster in 1899, a second lighthouse was built at Bathurst Point on the north eastern end of the island.
