バウロンの魅力~ Roundstone Bodhráns by Malachys Great wife Gifty.
On an old Franciscan Monastery in Roundstone, developed by the Industrial Development Authority , Malachy Kearns, better known as Malachy Bodhrán amongst folk musicians, works at his craft of making Ireland's oldest product the Bodhrán (Bow-Rawn). It is an 18 one sided drum made from Goatskin treated by a traditional process.Goatskin has unique stretch properties. The Irish word 'Bodhar' means deaf or haunting. The Bodhrán began as a skin tray used for drawing turf (peat) on the bogs.It stirs the spirit when played with the tipper or beater hitting the skin in a racing style while a hand presses the back of the skin to vary the tone. Malachy is respected as a fine Bodhrán makers for 35 years. Most of the professional folk Musicians world wide use our Bodhráns we are the only full time makers in the world.
The skins are treated in hydrated lime mixed with ingredients that are the closely guarded secret of every Bodhrán Maker. They are soaked for 7-10 days in a solution of lime sulphide which softens the skin, de-hairs it and dissolves the fatty tissue. Sometimes the skin is buried in manure. It is finally stretched under tension onto a Birch frame. It is also glued on - this is important for Bodhráns being sent abroad. It thus cannot rip off at the tack, traditionally the weakest part of the Bodhrán - when exposed to excess heat. The skin is stretched tight when new to give room for residual stretch. In the hands of a skilled player the Bodhrán can be a subtle and exciting instrument - striking the skin in a variety of ways, one hand tucked in behind the skin, pressing and moving to vary the colour and intensity of the sound. The side of the beater is also used to good effect on the wooden rim. Genuine Goatskin is a natural 'live' material, expands and contracts slightly with changing temperatures, it has an infinite variety of subtle 'veining' and it's rich lustre becomes more beautiful with age.

These lovingly restored fisherman’s cottages will also host a variety of free weekend family entertainment from April to August. Children will have the opportunity to join in on a range of activities including face painting, children’s crafts, balloon modelling and much more every weekend from 14:00- 16:00, whilst adults can enjoy live music, heritage and craft fairs.
Nine cottages on the Western edge of the bay, along the road to the Watch House, were demolished (rather than being preserved) in 1963. These dwellings although primitive, represented the typical house type found in most coastal villages at that time and to a large measure defined the character of the village of Groomsport. Local people were, to say the least, shocked to see, what they perceived to be the destruction of the village heritage. There seemed little that they could do in the face of the relentless march of progress and the rush to modernise, initiated by the local Council.
Finally, in 1968 / 69, with demolition equipment already on site, locals realised that the last remaining cottages, down by the water's edge were to be flattened. This street was known as Cockle Row. The last occupant of one of these cottages was Tilly Baron. She had already been re-housed into 25 Main Street by this time so the houses were in fact unoccupied and in what could only be described as poor order.
It was decided that enough was enough and affirmative action needed to be taken. The Presbyterian minister of the day - the Rev Dr David Irwin and his wife Maureen, organised a protest at very short notice. A group of local people, with no regard for their personal safety, placed themselves between the demolition machinery and the cottages of Cockle Row and defied the authorities to attempt to move closer to the cottages. A potentially very dangerous standoff was averted by the responsible actions of the machinery operators - or rather responsible inactions! They refused to move their equipment and a gentleman's agreement was reached with the Council delaying the demolition. This allowed time for the Arts Council and others involved in preservation, to produce an injunction and eventually a Preservation Order. Bangor Art Club became involved and used the cottages as their base for some time.
You can see an interview (recorded on 21st August 2017) with David and Maureen here.

Connemara & it's ponies
This fascinating, half-hour colour documentary, shot in 1969 has been shown around the world. It features a year in the life of the remarkable Connemara pony. Full film is ½ hour long & available via link.
Nendrum Monastery - Ancient Irish ruins
Nendrum is thought to have been set up by St Machaoi in the 5th Century and also has links to St Patrick in later sources. The monastery consists of 3 round dry stone walled enclosures, one within the other. There is evidence of industrial works in the outer enclosure; a central enclosure with a church ruin and sundial, the remains of a round tower and a graveyard. The middle enclosure has the remains of huts and workshops. It is thought to be the best example of a pre-Norman monastic site in Northern Ireland.

Dry stone - Video Learning - WizScience.com
Dry stone is a building method by which structures are constructed from stones without any mortar to bind them together. Dry stone structures are stable because of their unique construction method, which is characterized by the presence of a load-bearing façade of carefully selected interlocking stones. Dry stone technology is best known in the context of wall construction, but dry stone artwork, buildings, bridges, and other structures also exist.
A dry stone wall, also known as a dry stone dyke, drystane dyke, dry stone hedge, rock fence or stone fence, is a wall constructed from stones without mortar to bind them together. As with any dry stone construction, the structural integrity arises from compressional forces and the interlocking of the stones. Such walls have been traditionally used in building construction as field boundaries and garden or churchyard walls, and on steep slopes as retaining walls for terracing.
Terminology varies regionally. When used as field boundaries, dry stone structures often are known as dykes, particularly in Scotland. Dry stone walls are characteristic of upland areas of Britain and Ireland where rock outcrops naturally or large stones exist in quantity in the soil. They are especially abundant in the West of Ireland, particularly Connemara. They may also be found throughout the Mediterranean including retaining walls used for terracing. Such constructions are common where large stones are plentiful or conditions are too harsh for hedges capable of retaining livestock to be grown as reliable field boundaries. Many thousands of miles of such walls exist, most of them centuries old.
