Col de Bavella
Col de Bavella, Corsica - France T2055.17
A long, steep and incredibly beautiful climb.
The Bavella pass (1175m) is part of the Alta Rocca mountain range situated in the south east of Corsica. It is considered one of the most scenic roads on this Mediterranean island. This 35.5 km long film starts right next to the sea with a nice warm up before taking a left turn inland after passing through the resort town of Solenzara. After several kilometres of shorter ups and downs, the climb then settles into two long steep ascents separated by a welcome downhill respite. The maximum slope is 12%.

Epic Run - Col de Bavella - Corsica France
Click SHOW MORE for trail details and checkout what we are up to at:
In the months leading up to our Corsica trip everyone insisted we make the hour drive from Porto Vecchio up to the Col de Bavella for a day of exploration in the shadows of the famous Aiguilles de Bavella – and we’re totally psyched we did it. I’m not going to lie, the pull to skip the day trip was strong since we already live near majestic mountains, and because the Corsica coast offers some of the most beautiful Mediterranean beaches and quaint old towns we’ve visited, but to swim in turquoise seas in the morning, enjoy trail running with a strong Rocky Mountain essence during the day (minus the altitude issues!); then return to the coast for some amazing food with ocean views in the evening was truly one of our all-time most epic experiences! Everything about this run, from the Lady of the Snow statue atop a rock tower at the start, to the truly magnificent peaks lining nearly the entire route, to the plunges in-and-out of dense pine forest was just perfect. If only we had more time! Visit for details and map.

Places to see in ( Corsica - France ) Bavella Needles
The Aiguilles de Bavella (Corsican: I Forchi di Bavedda) are rocky spikes of red granite[1] that dominate the hill of the same name. The name means needles of Bavella. At 1218 m, the hill connects the Alta Rocca (fr) to the east coast of Corsica. This massif is smaller yet much more popular than the aiguilles de Popolasca. The site is characterized by jagged peaks, large rock walls and pine trees twisted by the wind.
Located in the centre of the Massif de Bavella, are the seven tours d'Asinau, or towers of Asinau, the actual needles. These are traditionally numbered from south to north:
Punta di l'Acellu (Punta ll'Aceddu, 1 588 m)
Punta di l'Ariettu (Punta ll'Arghjetu, 1 591 m)
Punta di a Vacca (Punta lla Vacca, 1 611 m), the only tower accessible to a simple hiker
Punta di u Pargulu (Punta llu Pàrgulu, 1 785 m), separated from the previous towers by the Bocca di u Pargulu (1662 m), taken by the Alpine variant of the GR 20
Punta Longa (1836 m)
Punta Alta (1855 m), the highest
Punta Iolla (1848 m), separated from the Punta Alta by the Bocca di u Santu (1745 m)
The highest points of the Bavella massif stand a little to the north of the Needles with both Punta di u Furnellu (Punta llu Furneddu) and Punta Muvrareccia (A Mufrareccia) at 1899m. The massif is overshadowed by the highest peak in the region, Monte Incudine (fr) (2134 m). It extends from the forest of Tova and the town of Solaro to the 1381m Monte Calva to the south, the edges of the Massif de l'Ospedale, and almost to Conca and the sea in the east.
From Mount Incudine to the Bavella Pass, the GR 20 footpath, after reaching the refuge of Asinau at 1536m, passes by the foot of the aiguilles de Bavella in the Rizzanese Valley (Asinau), but a so-called alpine variant route allows the towers of Bavella to be reached via the Bocca di u Pargulu (Bocca llu Pàrgulu, 1662 m). After the Bavella pass, the path begins its descent towards Conca, via Foce Finosa (1206 m) and the i Paliri refuge (1055 m) at the foot of the Punta Tafunata (literally Pierced Peak), a 1312 m high mountain with a hole.
A statue of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges (Our Lady of the Snows) stands at the pass, a few meters from the road, on top of a large mound of boulders. The Purcaraccia (fr) is a famous creek with waterfalls and natural pools. The trail starts about 8 km from there on the D268 towards Sari-Solenzara. The towns of Quenza, Zonza and Conca stand in a curve to the southwest of the Bavella Pass.

Zonza is a commune in the Corse-du-Sud department of France on the island of Corsica. Zonza is located in the mountain chain of Barocagio-Marghese which extends to the south of the Incudine massif. This mountainous area extends 20 km from west to east from the village of Zonza to the Tyrrhenian Sea and 12 km from north to south from the Bavella pass to Mount Rossu. The village is situated in the Rizzansee river valley on the mountainside opposite Quenza on the D268 road which connects Bavella to Levie.
To the east, the hamlet of Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio is the centre of a coastal area which is irrigated by the Cavu river. No communication road exists between these two parts of the commune. To travel from Zonza Village to St. Lucia, a distance of 17 km as the crow flies, the Zonza massif must be circled to the south and Ospedale forest passed through. This route is about 50 km and takes over an hour.
On 29 November 1993, waters of the coastal Cavu river rose by ten times in the space of half an hour causing rocks, trees, telephone poles to slide down the hill and flooding all the houses on its banks. Taglio Rosso in Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio became isolated from the rest of the area. This flood occurred at the same time as that of the Solenzara river which has its mouth at the town of the same name. Mudslides occurred in almost all of the Sartène arrondissement, from Propriano to Porto-Vecchio.
Sainte-Lucie-de-Porto-Vecchio (Corsican: Santa-Lucia-di-Portivechju) is located on Route nationale 198 on the east coast, between Sari-Solenzara and Porto-Vecchio. The D168A, to the east, leads to the coast and to the village of Pinarello, 3 km away. To the west, the D168 follows the Cavo river and leads to Conca, a village 5 km away.
An annex to the town hall is on the D168a towards Pinarello. The village has shops including a supermarket, a doctor's surgery, a pharmacy, a petrol station and a bookshop. The village also offers a variety of holiday accommodation, including hotels, campsites and other locations.
3 km to the east, the village of Pinarello (Corsican: golfe de Pinarellu), a small fishing port and marina, boasts a magnificent white sand beach that runs along a 10ha pine forest. A road which subsequently becomes a path leads along the Cavo river to the west.
