Steenbras River, Cape Whale Route, Gordon's Bay, South Africa
The Whale Coast Route begins in Cape Town and follows the particularly pretty R44, also known as Clarence Drive, through the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
The Cape Whale Route is a superb outdoor adventure family holiday destination. Incorporating towns such as Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond, Hermanus, Pringle Bay, Stanford and Gansbaai, the route offers some of the best land-based whale-watching spots on the planet, as well as many activities for the whole family.
Did you know?
Humpback whales, which are regularly spotted from the shores along the Cape Whale Coast, can weigh up to 30 tons.
The Cape Whale Route gives travellers a massive amount of options when it comes to exploring the Western Cape beyond Cape Town. There is far more to this route than just whales, with enough variety to keep families occupied for a week or two at least.
The road trip from Betty’s Bay along the coast toward the other towns on the Cape Whale Route is a peaceful experience, with the Atlantic Ocean on the one side and mountainous, fynbos terrain on the other. Travellers will pass through several quaint villages in between the more established towns.
Hermanus is the largest town along the Cape Whale Route, boasting excellent accommodation, restaurant and adventure activities. This town has become particularly famous for it’s whale-watching and the annual Hermanus Whale Festival. There are a number of tour operators here specialising in whale-watching boat tours for those who want to get a little closer to the world’s largest living creatures.
Adventure activity options along the route include hiking, shark cage-diving, sea kayaking, quad biking, parasailing, horse riding and, of course, whale-watching boat tours.
There are several golf courses along the Cape Whale Route. Arabella Country Club is famed for it’s pristine fairways and luxury infrastructure, while the Hermanus Golf Course has become one of the most popular courses in Africa, because it offers 27 holes and a variety of challenges for golfers of all levels.

LEAD-IN:
Southern Right Whales are the only species in the world to be protected from the whaling industry.
Each year they migrate to Walker Bay in Hermanus, near Cape Town in South Africa, to mate and nurse their young.
This attracts hundreds of tourists from all over the world, keen to get a glimpse of these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
STORYLINE:
The town of Hermanus in Walker Bay on the Cape's southern coast claims to offer possibly the best land-based whale watching in the world.
All nine of the great whale species found in the Southern Hemisphere come past South Africa's shores.
The Southern Right Whales are the most endangered of all the great whales.
In Gaansbaai, which is situated further up the coast to Hermanus, tourists flock to see these creatures up close through boat-based whale watching tours, which are carefully monitored by local authorities.
Because these whales are protected creatures only tour operators with official permits are able to take tourists out to sea.
Every year Southern Right Whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climates, reaching South Africa in June. They can also be found off South America (around Chile & Argentina) and in the Great Australian Bight, as well as along the western coast of New Zealand.
In Hermanus there is an annual whale festival - which creates a tourist boom.
There is also a whale crier, to please the visitors and encourage the whales into the bay.
It is usual to see females and their babies stay in the bay for periods of up to three months or more.
Right whales were named because when whaling started they were considered the right whale to hunt, because they move slowly and are easier to approach and kill.
Southern Right Whales came close to extinction but have been protected since 1937.

SOUTH AFRICA: DOG USED IN BATTLE AGAINST SEAFOOD POACHERS
English/Nat
South African police have a new weapon in the battle against poaching - Tammy the dog.
She's been sniffing out criminals who've been plundering seafood delicacies from beaches and harbours.
Gordon's Harbour is just one of a handful of bays along the South African coastline which are fast becoming a haven for illegal seafood poachers.
Delicacies such as abalone and crayfish are in high demand throughout the world.
And the bays are attracting illegal poachers who smuggle the seafood out of the country and sell it on the black market for lucrative profits.
In a bid to crackdown on the poachers, police have now brought in a new weapon - Tammy - a border collie bitch.
The new recruit is officially known as the Protected Fish Species Investigation Dog - her appointment is believed to be a world first.
With her handler and trainer, Sergeant Jon Hennop, Tammy patrols beaches and harbours, sniffing out the scent of two species of abalone.
Abalone is one of the most sought after seafood delicacies in the world - particularly in Asia where it is regarded as an aphrodisiac.
But Tammy has also been trained to follow the scent of crayfish - and she rarely lets her colleagues down.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
If the dog finds the product she's rewarded with a plaything and if she finds it, she sits down or lays down next to the product. But there's no big difference between training a dog in this sense. The dog in this way is only trained to detect these three scents: rock
lobster, dried abalone and normal abalone.
SUPER CAPTION: Seargent John Hennop, Tammy's handler
Tammy first went on the beat in September last year.
Before that, she had just nine months of intensive training under the watchful eye and encouragement of Seargent Hennop.
Every day she was put through her paces - taught how to pick up the different scents of abalone and crayfish.
Tammy's sense of smell is so powerful she can sniff out the seafood no matter how well it is buried or hidden.
And her performance has so far impressed senior officers.
Tammy's introduction into the police force was part of a desperate effort by officers to halt the alarming increase in abalone poaching.
In fact the situation is so bad, it is exhausting stocks of abalone to dangerously low levels.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
There's quite a lot of money involved in the smuggling of abalone and crayfish. There is big syndicates involved, especially the Chinese market. There's a lot of money going out of the country to China.
SUPER CAPTION: Gert Aggenbach, Head Marine Division of South African Police's
Organised Crime Unit
But it's hoped this will now change as Tammy fast becomes a familiar face along these parts.
Her brief includes boarding the scores of fishing boats, which are often used to smuggle abalone out of the country.
Since Tammy started her patrols in September last year, she has recovered 228 kilogrammes of poached perlemoen, worth thousands of U-S dollars
Police say poachers normally sell to Eastern countries where such delicacies are in hot demand and pocket about 20 dollars a kilogramme.
Tammy now has an international reputation - so much so that South African police have had inquiries from abroad.
Poaching is also on the increase in Australia and police there have spoken to their South African counterparts about establishing a similar programme.
