- ... We headed out of Milford undecided as to whether or not to tackle Key Summit, a hike covering the start of the Routeburn track, one of New Zealand 's Great Walks, but quite frankly when it came to it we couldn't be bothered ...

Routeburn Track - New Zealand Great Walks Track - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Experience New Zealand's second most famous walk, which straddles the rugged spine of Fiordland's Humboldt Mountains, and enjoy scenery even more varied than the Milford Track.
The Routeburn Track has the capacity to lift you way beyond the normal world of outdoor experience. It is utterly sublime. A gloriously remote and untouched wilderness pathway, that can lead you back from the 21st Century to view a pre-historic earth. The view from the track's highest point, Conical Peak near Harris Saddle, holds you spellbound and lost for words. The panorama of encircling snow-capped mountains extends to the Tasman Sea. The exquisite serenity, stillness and loveliness of Lake Harris, will remain a permanent image etched in your mind.
The 33 km track usually takes 3 to 4 days with a choice of 4 huts and 2 campsites that need to be booked well in advance. The huts are located at Lake Howden, Lake Mackenzie, Routeburn Falls, and Routeburn Flats. The track can be walked from the Divide on the Te Anau/Milford highway, or from the Routeburn Shelter at the head of Lake Wakatipu.
The variety of landscapes is amazing. From the grassy river flats you climb through dense beech forest to the snowline where alpine plants grow in profusion. An exposed sub-alpine section is traversed on Day 2, following the Routeburn to its outlet from Lake Harris. The natural sounds of water tumbling, trickling, gushing and cascading can be heard all along the track. The vegetation growth is prolific, and you can see native birds and colourful butterflies along the way. Great Walk hut or campsite passes can be purchased at the visitor centres in Te Anau, Queenstown and Glenorchy. Public transport is available at either end of the track but needs to be pre-arranged.
The Routeburn is a one-off experience. You will never forget the overwhelming accumulation of natural beauty and the endless variety of forms, shapes and colours.

The start of my Routeburn Track adventure in New Zealand!
I started my 3-day and 20-mile trek of the Routeburn Track at the Shelter side in Glenorchy/Queenstown. I then ended my trek at the Divide side in Milford/Te Anau.
Here I crossed the many raging rivers and bridges on the beautiful Routeburn Track, which is one of my top favorite hikes/tramps I've done so far!
Routeburn Track Virtual Tour
One of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Routeburn Track is an easy 2-3 day, 32km hike through Mt. Aspiring and Fjordland National Parks. The scenery is incredible! Kinloch Lodge is located 19km from the start of the track and is a perfect base for pre- and post-track stays.
Routeburn Track Day Hike To Routeburn Flats Hut
Super scenic hike on the world heritage Routeburn Track to the first hut - Routeburn Flats Hut. Around 17kms return, it took us 5 hours all up including an hour lunch break at the hut. Easy walk with well-maintained tracks.

Tramping the Routeburn, New Zealand
Routeburn Track
The Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. In three days, it leads from Mount Aspiring National Park into Fiordland National Park. The first day takes you from Lake Wakatipu through the Routeburn valley, then ascending to Routeburn Falls Hut at the treeline. On the second day, Harris Saddle (1255 m) is crossed; a side trip leads up to Conical Hill. The final day is mainly downwards through forest to the Divide on Milford Road. On this final stretch, you can take another side trip to the Key Summit. The Routeburn Track can be combined with the Greenstone or Caples Tracks to a round trip back to Lake Wakatipu.

New Zealand's Fiordland: Including The Routeburn Track
A 3-day trek in one of New Zealand's Great Walks: The Routeburn Track. Due to a recent snow at the saddle, we stayed in Routeburn Flats campground for 2 nights. After setting up camp, the first day we explored the Routeburn North Branch Track to a beautiful field surrounded by mountain peaks. We also saw a kea (native parrot to the south island of New Zealand). On the second day climbed the steep trail up to Harris Saddle. There was snow just past Routeburn Falls Shelter. It was beautifully painted in white! :-) After hiking out, we drove to the other end of the Routeburn (at the Divide in the Fiordland National Park) and hiked to The Key. Great views of the Routeburn from the top. The video ends with our hike to Lake Marian. It's a short, not-too-steep track new The Divide. Thanks for watching! :-)
Routeburn Track, 2013
On Boxing Day in New Zealand I did a trail run/hike on the beautiful Routeburn Track north of Te Anau on the way to Milford Sound. It started out cloudy but then the sun came out for a bit. This was my 3rd time on the trail, but the farthest I went out.

Conical Hill -Routeburn Track, Fiordland NZ
This is the view from Conical Hill during my Routeburn hike. It's at 1515 meters, 4970 feet. At one angle you can just see Martin's Bay an the Tasman sea beyond. It snowed a bit the night before but most of the white on the opposite ridge is actually glacial.
