Rovaniemi: The Home of Father Christmas
Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, in Northern Finland, and it is placed just a smidge over the line of the Arctic Polar Circle. Unsurprisingly, the climate is positively freezing during the winter months. The average temperature recorded in February 2018 was 13 degrees Celsius below zero. In the Fahrenheit world, this is more or less Alaska.

Rovaniemi Finland Tour November 2018
Rovaniemi Finland Tour November 2018
Rovaniemi Finland Tour November 2018- We departed from Helsinki to go to Rovaniemi. I swear that Rovaniemi means Christmas in Finnish. This city doesn't play around when it comes to Christmas. Even when you get out of the terminal from the plane, you're greeted by Christmas elves statues. This video shows are time in Rovaniemi. If you come out here, make sure you go to a Finnish sauna (nude) and skinny dip in a icy-cold lake. The Arkikum Science Museum is an awesome place to explore Finnish nature and history. Make sure you visit Santa Claus Village. It may be touristy, but your Christmas Spirit will awaken when you arrive. Plus, it's awesome to walk into the Arctic Circle, especially when it's your first time. Check out some awesome huskies at the Huskey Park. You can pet them and learn about them. Always remember- the voyage is contagious!!!!

Arktikum museum & science centre in Rovaniemi in Lapland, Finland - Arktikum tiedekeskus ja museo
Rovaniemi's Arktikum is a museum, science centre, attraction, popular culture destination as well as a memorable venue for meetings and conferences. Arktikum tells the story of the North.

Arktikum in Rovaniemi, Finland
The Arktikum is a museum and science centre in Rovaniemi, Finland. Arktikum is an attraction, popular culture destination as well as a memorable venue for meetings and conferences. There is also Arktikum Café and library to serve the customers. Two separate actors operate at Arktikum: Arctic Center and the Provincial Museum of Lapland.
Arktikum in Rovaniemi is a museum, science centre, attraction, popular culture destination as well as a memorable venue for meetings and conferences. Arktikum exhibitions lead guests on an adventure to Finnish Lapland and the Arctic region.
The review of the history of Finnish Lapland spans from Rovaniemi to Upper Lapland and from prehistory to about the 1970s. The Arctic region is examined in light of the Arctic research of today and the future. The exhibitions provide a comprehensive section of the history and culture of Lapland as well as of Arctic knowledge. Also, the temporary exhibitions of Arktikum display Northern and Arctic life.
The exhibitions at the Provincial Museum of Lapland and the Arctic Center examine culture, history, and modern life in the Arctic. Concepts such as human life in tune with nature are explored in depth. There are also temporary exhibitions in Arktikum.
Arktikum opened to the public on 6 December 1992, the 75th anniversary of Finland's independence. It was designed by Danish architect group Birch-Bonderup & Thorup-Waade. The crescent-shaped new annex was designed by Claus Bonderup and Janne Lehtipalo, and it was completed in autumn 1997.
Plenty of local natural materials have been used in the building: the floors are made from Perttaus granite – the hardest type available in Finland – and from lime-washed Lappish pine. The chairs are made from birch and reindeer hide.
The most visible part of the museum, its glass corridor, is 172 metres long in all and it is dissected by the 30-metre wide Kittilä highway. The tube serves as the “Gateway to the North”, as the entrance foyer is at the southern end and guests head north when coming in. The exhibition space is sheltered below the ground, mimicking the way animals in the North take cover from the harsh, cold winter by burrowing under the snow.
According to Topworld International, the museum is the 4th best travel attraction in Finland.

Lapland artist echoes cry from nature
(28 Dec 2019) LEAD IN:
A visual artist from Finnish Lapland is echoing a cry from nature as part of a retrospective exhibit being staged in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.
60-year-old artist Kaija Kiuru's work explores man's changing relationship with nature, using locally sourced materials and traditional techniques.
STORY-LINE:
Traditional crafts, pine wood cut from Lappish forests, memories of gardens now marked and ruined.
Rovaniemi's Art Museum is mounting a retrospective exhibit dedicated to Finnish visual artist Kaija Kiuru.
It covers 24 years of the 60-year-old artist's career, including sculptures, photographs and installations.
Many of the works come from northern nature, dealing with the changing relationship between nature and man.
She makes her art pieces the same way as man deals with nature, shaping it, forming it and using it, making something different to make us think, explains exhibitions curator Aira Huovinen.
Recent works concern the artist's opposition to a proposed mine in Viiankiaapa nature conservation area near Kiuru's hometown of Sodankyla, about 120 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.
Works include a photographic series that show boundary markers fixed on trees in the conservation area, reminding viewers it's a location that's meant to be preserved.
There's also a photographic series showing local people holding demonstration signs, they look directly towards the viewer, challenging them to consider their own views.
She doesn't judge, she just shows us the facts, the state of nature at the moment. And how does the man have an effect to the nature, says Huovinen.
Born in 1959, Kiuru has been staging private exhibitions since 1994.
Underneath creates the impression of underground life with roots hanging from the ceiling. Some have been painted red to remind the viewer of blood vessels.
Tent is made from lace tablecloth, crocheted behind to make a tent cloth. The material was all bought from flea markets or received from acquaintances. It invokes old living rooms of the past, spread across a modern, common hiking tent.
Some ladies have made them, and then they have used, and then they go to the second hand shop and Kaija is buying them, and then she is putting them together, explains art history professor Tuija Hautala-Hirvioja, who knows Kiuru personally.
We have reindeer herders, we still have fishermen who are working in nature. So, nature is a normal way of life, but also, it's a very relaxed visit in nature. And of course, there is all the time, behind her, thinking, worry about the nature, what is going to happen nature today? says Hautala-Hirvioja.
In Forcing Nature, nature and the industrial world are combined. The work consists of pine marten furs fixed on metal frames. In the corner, one taxidermy pine marten remains.
The skins are mostly years of leftover materials from Lappish craftsmen. The work serves to remind viewers how man modifies and uses nature for his own needs.
I think the viewers of this exhibition will have to think again their relationship. Think about the way they use nature. Do they take advantage of it? Or do they just enjoy and let it be as it is? says Huovinen.
Places of the Mind Framed by the World runs at Rovaniemi Art Museum, part of Korundi culture house until 12 January 2020.

Finnish For A Day
Finnish for a day! We experience an epic day full of popular activities like trying a traditional Finnish sauna for the first time and canoeing. We also learn about Finnish history and culture at Arktikum, a science centre and museum every local told us was a ‘must see’ in Rovaniemi, Lapland. We also try Finnish food in a kota, a wooden hut with a chimney that’s a traditional place for building a fire to warm up and enjoy a meal. My dream of seeing the northern lights also comes true and I can hardly believe my luck. We're overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Lapland and our day of ‘being Finnish’ is a major success!

Awesome Gift from Finland
Just to say thanks for the awesome gift i have received today.
Winter Vacation and destinations in Europe - One of the most beautiful Country.
Winter comes in many guises in Europe, in the polar north there’s serious snow and sunless weeks, while you’ll find lingering sunshine in the mild Mediterranean, and cosy cafe culture and Christmas spirit in the centre. It's an inspiring time to visit grand metropolises and charming villages: with fewer queues you can fit more into your itinerary, and low off-season accommodation prices make travel wallet-friendly. Via Europe’s train network you can explore countries at your leisure, meeting locals going about their daily business away from the often-frenetic summer tourist season.
1. Rovaniemi, Finland
Fistfuls of Christmas clichés characterise Rovaniemi, the 'official' terrestrial residence of Santa Claus. Everyone's favourite bearded man hangs out in an atmospheric Arctic Circle grotto, and it's free to visit him (but photos are another story). Snow and reindeer add festive spirit, while the Arktikum museum gives insights into life at these latitudes.
Tip: Finnish thermometers have more numbers below 0°C than above, so pack serious winter clothing.
2. Christmas markets, Germany & Austria
December sees these romantic historic markets pop up all over Germany and other Central European nations. Expect cute stalls selling everything from gingerbread to sleigh bells and plenty of good cheer, toasted with a glass of warming glühwein.
Tip: Famous markets in Cologne, Vienna and Munich draw the tourist crowds, but seeking out ones in smaller towns is rewarding.
3. Abisko, Sweden
Almost as far north as you can get in Europe on a train, Abisko in Lapland is for lovers of serious winter. The sun doesn't rise for several weeks in December and January but that darkness makes it one of the world's best places to view the majestic aurora borealis. Other attractions include cross-country skiing along national park trails and husky mushing.
Tip: Stop off at nearby Kiruna to see the famous Icehotel.
4. Athens, Greece
It's a real downer trying to Photoshop 500 people out of your would-be-prizewinning Parthenon photo, but in winter it's not an issue. All summer stresses – crowding, tourist pricing, intense heat, queues, air pollution – more or less disappear. It's the best time to explore the country's ancient heritage and get to experience local culture.
Tip: By all means do some island-hopping, but most accommodations close in winter.
5. Copenhagen, Denmark
For fairytale European winter, it's hard to beat the home of Hans Christian Andersen. Forget the over-hyped Little Mermaid and head to the city's cosy bars and cafes to watch snow flurrying outside. In the heart of town, the 19th-century Tivoli amusement park is a romantic, kitsch delight around Christmastime, with heartwarming illuminations and body-warming mugs of glögg.
Tip: Splash out on a meal at Noma, considered by many to be the world's best restaurant (reservations can fill quickly, so try to book several months in advance).
6. Budapest, Hungary
Couples skating hand-in-hand, breath cloudy in the frosty air – there’s nowhere better for it than the Hungarian capital’s picturesque central park Városligeti Műjégpálya, with its enormous outdoor rink. Feeling chilly afterwards? Budapest is famous for its ornate thermal baths.
Tip: At night seek out a ‘ruin pub’ – an atmospheric drinking venue artfully created in a once-abandoned building.
7. Jasná, Slovakia
Slovakia offers high-quality skiing at affordable prices. Accommodation and food are reasonable too, and there's a friendliness that’s missing from some of the snootier Alpine slopes. Jasná is the best Slovakian resort, with long descents flanked by snow-laden spruce trees, set in the ruggedly lovely Tatras Mountains.
Tip: Flights direct to Slovakia can be pricey, so don't make this your entry point to Europe.
8. Andalucía, Spain
Parts of Andalucía are further south than the African coast so expect mild temperatures in winter. Accommodation is cheap, and crowds are smaller at standout attractions like Granada's Alhambra or Seville's cathedral. Plus tapas and nightlife in the cities are as enticing as ever.
Tip: Head to the Sierra Nevada near Granada if you want snowsport action.
9. Transylvania, Romania
You can’t visit Dracula’s lair on a sunny day with lambs bleating in the fields, right? Try steel-grey skies, bare trees and a smattering of snow. Braşov and Sighişoara, two hours apart by rail, are gorgeous medieval towns with various connections to Vlad Ţepeş, the historical Dracula, though it’s doubtful that he ever set foot in his so-called castle.
Tip: Bram Stoker never visited Romania, so don’t expect many parallels with the book or films.
10. Venice, Italy
Hauntingly beautiful and rather weird, Venice's Carnevale in February is a European highlight. Elaborate costumes and spooky masks bring the canal city's colourful history to life. Costumed dances are pricey affairs, but you can have a ball enjoying the free events with a mask bought on the street, but be prepared for epic crowding.

The counterfeit mystery religion of Babylon which began with the worship of Ishtar (Isis - Astarte - Ashtaroth -Easter) found expression in many different forms in the different cultures of the world under many different names, but the essence of the false worship was the same. It was based on a substitute salvation and redemption message that used the gratification of man's natural five senses and their fleshly desires. Nimrod and his mother were the originators of this worship upon earth.

We haven't seen this level of warming over so many parts of the global simultaneously for thousands of years maybe millions of years. Now that said, part of arctic is actually cooling, is a cooling signal over the Greenland, but northwestern, North America, and northwestern Russia, the warming signal here is not as strong, but some parts of the artic is experiencing 3 to 4 degrees celsius warming over the last 30 years. So this is very significant.

This warm end of November is because of the weather and not the overall climate, so we can't categorically say that this is evidence of climate change.

No I don't think it effects that much here. I think we are one of the safest places on planet when it comes to 'Global Warming'. It's been pretty normal, started winter this year. Last winter was a little bit warmer than normal, but that was the warmest in about 100 years. So in the last five, ten years, no big differences.

We will have snow. That is no problem. The problem is the snow will come later. And actually it will melt earlier. We have predicted, all the scientists and they have predicted that winter will be about one month shorter. So it will be the first two weeks in the beginning or the last two weeks in April when we won't have that much snow as we are used to. But actually they have predicted that would happen in 2030. So it's a long period of time we have to adjust.
