The best journeys are ones worth taking slowly, saying – we get there when we get there – and staring at the magic outside your window as you go.
Rovos Rail is a five-star time machine that ambles at leisurely pace, transporting guests from across the world through the most evocative scenes Africa has to offer, to amongst its most renowned destinations.
These trains visit the Namib, take guests on golfing or birding safaris, host private events and it’s thanks to a moment of inspiration which struck in the mid eighties. When Rohan and his wife Anthea Vos took up a last-minute invitation on a Magaliesberg train trip for business suppliers, he was entranced and this world famous private train is the result.
Particularly for rail and steam enthusiasts, the private station at Capital Park, Pretoria is a treasure trove. Here each of the locomotives is named after the Vos children – Bianca, Tiffany, Shaun and Brenda Vos. The dream ‘was’ tested. In ’94 these magnificent trains were close to breaking even but the banks were jittery. So Roland came up with a trip from Cape Town to Vic Falls, advertised it in the U.K. – it was a hit and he never looked back.
Rovos Rail. Cape Town to Pretoria.
Rovos Rail offers the luxury and romance of a bygone era, under the watchful eye of a family whose heart and passion have gone into creating an impeccable train service appropriately named 'The Pride of Africa.' I was lucky enough to join them for the Cape Town to Pretoria trip and shot this video. What I learnt whilst on this, the most luxurious train in the world, is that travel is ALL about the journey.

Rovos Rail - African Golf Collage
One of the most luxurious trains in South Africa and possibly the world. Rovos Rail operates on some of the most scenic routes throughout southern Africa and offers accommodation that is more in line with that of Five-star hotels than the rail industry.
Rohan Vos established Rovos Rail in 1985 after purchasing a number of redundant South African Railways coaches from an auction, his interest was ignited after taking a journey on a preserved train to Magaliesberg.
The idea of running a family caravan soon turned into a commercial opportunity, but operating privately owned trains on the national network proved to be both difficult and expensive. With dwindling ticket sales and a struggling local economy, many years of hardship followed, but the turnaround finally came with the establishment of the Cape Town to Victoria Falls route that was advertised abroad and quickly gained support.
Today the company boasts an impressive fleet of both locomotives and other rolling stock as well as their own yard and station facilities at Capital Park, Pretoria. Including a number of South African Class 19D's, 25NC's and more recently 5E's, these are only used in around Pretoria. They have also purchased five Australian Clyde EMD GL26C's that I understand are to be used on some of their long-distance packages such as Dar Es Salaam and Victoria Falls. On the remainder of the national network, traction is provided by Transnet using the South African Class 18E's.
The following series of clips features the train in the Breede River Valley, Western Cape, South Africa.

Rovos Rail is a private railway company operating out of Capital Park Station in Pretoria, South Africa. Rovos Rail runs its train-hotel to a regular schedule on various routes throughout Southern Africa, from South Africa to Namibia and Tanzania.
This epic 15-day train journey travels through South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania and is one of the most famous in the world. The sojourn begins in Cape Town taking guests to the historic village of Matjiesfontein, the diamond town of Kimberley and the capital city of Pretoria for short tours followed by two nights in the Madikwe Game Reserve*. Continue through Botswana into Zimbabwe where guests overnight at the Victoria Falls Hotel. After crossing the mighty Zambezi River, the train joins the Tazara line in Zambia and continues to Chisimba Falls where guests enjoy a bush walk. The train climbs to the Tanzanian border then descends into the Great Rift Valley negotiating the tunnels, switchbacks and viaducts of the spectacular escarpment. Climbing again, it traverses the Selous Game Reserve – the largest on the continent and a vision
of timeless Africa – before the bustling arrival in Dar es Salaam the following day.
