A Day in the Park & Festival of Lights - New Plymouth, New Zealand
We miss the holiday light displays in the states and were intrigued when some fellow backpackers mentioned the Festival of Lights in Pukekura Park (Taranaki's premier botanical garden) in New Plymouth, New Zealand. The city was a little out of the way, but close by enough to check it out. It was a beautiful day and having arrived early, we decided to walk around the park and explore Brooklands Zoo (a small zoo attached to the park).
We enjoyed the day but were really looking forward to the lights. It was still daylight when we went to the festival and found live music, dancing and food trucks from local eateries. We reflected on the day and noticed many families out enjoying their time together. They danced, rented row boats, talked with friends and neighbors, and played in the park. We commented that when surveying the crowd, we only noticed one person on their phone. What was going on here?
As it became darker, the lights came on. We really didn’t know what to expect and was treated to something different from the lights we’re used to. As we walked the paths, each section had a theme that covered the gamut of imagination, from an alien abduction to musical flowers. In some ways it reminded us of Meow Wolf in that it was very artsy and somewhat, but not totally interactive.
Admission for the entire day was free! We made sure to purchase food items as we went to help support the local cause. Thank you New Plymouth for the wonderful day and evening

Whanganui Collegiate School - Rowing
Sport at Collegiate is so much more than simply a physical activity. As Jack Monckton explains, rowing has helped him become more personally responsible for his actions, develop self-control and build trust in himself and his teammates. Oh, and winning isn't a bad feeling either.

Trans-Tasman rowing success for marine conservation
Trans-Tasman rowing success for marine conservation is a new chapter in NZ rowing, which began in October 2012 when the four-man 'Team Gallagher', a NZ rowing team become the first New Zealand team to cross the Tasman by oar power with the goal of raising money for coral reef marine conservation.
The trans-Tasman rowing challenge will require NZ rowing Team Gallagher to complete some half a million strokes over 1,400 nautical miles - using the iconic harbour bridges of Sydney and Auckland as the start and finish lines.
The NZ rowing Team Gallagher were raising money for marine conservation to help build the world's biggest man made coral reef off the northern coast of Borneo, just east of Semporna. The marine conservation coral reef, in the shape of a nautilus, will provide a home and hunting ground for a vast diversity of marine species.
The trans-Tasman rowing adventure reaffirms the Team Gallagher commitment to marine conservation and will raise awareness of their oceans plight. The enormity of the row and the vastness of this stretch of water reminds me how significant our oceans are to our very existence, says Team Gallagher rower James Blake.
Hamilton-based Team Gallagher Director and trans-Tasman rowing member Rob Hamill believes the coral reef garden project has the potential to become a global movement for marine conservation. This will raise awareness of the issue of dynamite fishing and the related destruction of the coral reef and reefs in developing countries and in the long term will make a difference to the global fishery.
Follow this amazing trans-Tasman rowing adventure, and the trials and tribulations suffered by the NZ rowing team, Team Gallagher.

WHO ARE WE
We are Steven and Simone and we are currently living in Christchurch, New Zealand. Here, we are exploring this beautiful country and learning more about the impact that travel has on our environment. We are trying to be more responsible travellers. Doing so, we will share our stories, ideas, tips and the steps we take towards this goal.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! In October we will travel the 18.666km back from New Zealand to the Netherlands WITHOUT FLYING. Instead, we will be slow travelling over land and ocean by boat, train and bicycle.
RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL HAS NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITING!
We hope to share a weekly update with you every Wednesday. Follow our adventures and don't forget to subscribe! :-)
