Wildflowers are in full bloom at Rowena Crest in the Columbia River Gorge
Wildflowers have been popping up throughout the Columbia River Gorge this spring, and right now they’re out in full force at Rowena Crest.
Located off the Historic Columbia Highway near Mosier, Rowena Crest contains a popular viewpoint and two trails that lead through the Tom McCall Nature Preserve, which is currently bursting with yellow balsamroot and purple lupine flowers. It appears to be in peak bloom now, so if you want to see it you should get there soon.
The lower Rowena Plateau Trail is open year-round, but in May it’s also home to a big wildflower bloom. The easy hike has several branching trails leading to viewpoints over the river, adding up to about a two-mile round-trip hike.
There’s no specific parking lot at Rowena Crest, but there’s space to park along the sides of the looped road leading to the viewpoint. On sunny days during wildflower season it can full up fast.
The land at Rowena Crest is managed jointly by the U.S. Forest Service, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and The Nature Conservancy, an environmental nonprofit that owns nature preserves around the world. The Tom McCall Nature Preserve is named for the former Oregon governor.
To get to Rowena Crest from Portland, take Interstate 84 east to exit 69 for Mosier. Turn right on U.S. 30 (Historic Columbia Highway) and follow it for 13 miles to the Rowena Crest Viewpoint. Both trailheads are found at the viewpoint.

Rowena Crest: Gorge-ous Views! ????????
The Columbia River Gorge at Sunset from Rowena Crest, Oregon on April 6, 2016
View from Mosier Plateau Trail
Filmed by Pete Schreiner for Friends of the Columbia Gorge
MOSIER PLATEAU - owned by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge Land Trust
Size: 46 acres
Acquisition by the land trust: 44 acres donated in 2007; 2 acres purchased in 2008
Location: Wasco County, Oregon
Access: Open to the public via the Mosier Plateau trail
The rocky anticline that serves as the backdrop to the community of Mosier, the bulk of the Mosier Plateau was donated by Friends' Founder Nancy Russell in 2007. Upon receiving the donation, the land trust determined that an adjacent property, wholly in the urban area of Mosier extended up to the plateau and along the bluff. In 2008, the land trust purchased that property to protect the entire bluff line.
The Mosier Plateau hosts over 50 species of wildflowers in the spring. Outstanding Gorge views are available throughout the property.
In 2013 a trail was completed that connects Mosier's Pocket Park to Mosier Plateau. A beautiful viewpoint was built along with benches and basalt stones for rest stops. The trail is part of the Gorge Towns to Trails vision for a comprehensive trail system linking Gorge trails to communities.
Stewardship efforts include the elimination of skeleton weed, thistle, and other invasive species, as well as removing lower tree branches to reduce fire risk. Native wildflower seed will be added soon. Bluebird boxes were installed in 2009 by Friends' member Tom Wood to enhance wildlife. Volunteer Bryce Guske built benches along the trail in 2013.

Grant's Getaways: Towns to Trails in the Gorge
As spring reaches full bloom, Oregonians are eager to hit a hiking trail. Fortunately in the Columbia River Gorge there's a new way to discover the nooks and crannies of the region, one that encourages visitors to try local flavors too. The Mosier Plateau Trail is the first completed trail segment of Towns to Trails, an ambitious project by the Friends of the Columbia Gorge – and supported by the Travel Oregon Forever Fund – that aims to connect the region's towns, businesses and wild areas through a 200-mile trail system.
Wildflowers Near Rowena Crest, OR.
Early wildflowers near Rowena Crest. This was filmed at Tom McCall Preserve, just outside the boundary of Mayer State Park. Near Mosier, Oregon. This is looking mostly up the Columbia River, towards The Dalles. The video does pan north across the river into the small town of Lyle, Washington, and pans southward towards McCall Point, and neighboring hills. Filmed April 27, 2018.
