The Tempest at Royal & Derngate
TICKETS -
Royal & Derngate's fourth tribute to William Shakespeare this year is his last masterpiece, The Tempest, in a vibrant new version by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Oscar and BAFTA winning Ida; Her Naked Skin, National Theatre).
Set on a remote island of villains, lovers, fools and outcasts, The Tempest is a tale of enlightenment and forgiveness. Conjuring up a supernatural world of sorcery, savagery, shipwrecks and chivalry, Shakespeare’s late play is the bard at his most mystical and audacious.
Shakespeare’s magical story of growing up and growing old will be performed by the next generation of talent – an ensemble of 18-25 year olds that brings together the most promising young actors from the UK and Northamptonshire. The production is a unique collaboration with the National Youth Theatre, whose renowned alumni rank amongst Britain’s greatest actors including Northampton’s Matt Smith, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Helen Mirren and Daniel Day Lewis.
The production is directed by Caroline Steinbeis, whose recent credits include The Crucible at Manchester Royal Exchange and The Broken Heart for Shakespeare's Globe. Design is by Lucy Sierra (Giving, Hampstead Theatre) and the Lighting Designer is Johanna Town, who previously worked with Royal & Derngate on To Sir, With Love. Tom Mills returns to Northampton as Composer and Sound Designer, after previously working on last year's world premiere of Arthur Miller's The Hook.

Jealous Ethel Hallow is always out to spoil Mildred’s fun. Miss Hardbroom is opposed to all fun in general. And just as Mildred sparks some inevitable mayhem certain to upset them both, an old enemy returns with a plan for revenge that could threaten not just the Academy, but the whole world.
Jill Murphy’s The Worst Witch stories have sold more than five million copies worldwide and been made into numerous films and TV series. The most recent and successful was written by playwright Emma Reeves (Royal Television Society Award for Best Children’s TV Programme and 2017 British Screenwriters Award for Best Children’s Programme) who is now bringing these stories to life on the Royal Stage at Christmas in a major new play that will subsequently embark upon a national tour.
Featuring all of Jill Murphy’s beloved characters, this original story is directed by Theresa Heskins (2017 UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People) and features especially written music, breath-taking magic and plenty of Mildred’s unique brand of utter pandemonium!

“All right then show me already whose fault it is! They skinnin’ us alive here, so whose fault is it already?!”
Amidst the political tensions of 1950s America, Arthur Miller’s The Hook (The Crucible, All My Sons) was suppressed by the FBI for fear that it could cause unrest in New York’s dockyards.
To mark the centenary of the Pulitzer Prize ‑ winning playwright’s birth, Royal & Derngate and Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse will co-produce the world premiere of Miller’s ‘play for the screen’ adapted for the stage by Emmy Award-winning Ron Hutchinson.
Sixty years on, the dockyards of Brooklyn’s epic waterfront will come alive on the Royal stage for the extraordinary story of Marty Ferrara, a longshoreman who challenges the mobsters and gangs of ’50s New York and takes a stand against the corruption he witnesses from the authorities who control the docks.
The story of a close-knit community grappling with a world of crime and punishment, of changing industry and immigration from abroad, The Hook is a study in integrity and betrayal, charting one man’s struggle for meaningful change.
This world premiere from one of America’s most revered writers is directed by Artistic Director James Dacre.
