Royal Alcazar of Seville - Spain 4K Travel Channel
The Alcazar of Seville, the Royal Palace, is located at the end of the old town of Seville, directly opposite the cathedral. Originally it was built as a fortified palace by Abd-al-Rahman III, Emir and Caliph of Córdoba, in 913. In the 11th century, Al-Mutamid, the king of Seville built the Alcázar, or what he called the Blessing Palace. For centuries it served as residence for many generations of monarchs. Nowadays it is the residence of the Royal Family during their stays in Seville.
Over the course of the centuries it became a complex of several palaces with beautiful courtyards. (Therefore, in Spanish one uses the term in the plural, the Reales Alcázares de Sevilla). Still today, many architectural features Moorish-style can be recognized.
It is the oldest palace in Europe, which is still used today. Since 1987 it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Alcazar lies behind the palace wall. We enter the Alcazar by the lion gate, the La Puerta de Leons and reaches the lion court.
To the right is the so-called Room of the Admiral in the Casa de Contratación, the House of Trade. It was built around 1503 to regulate the trade with the new colonies. Here, once met Ferdinand and Isabella with Columbus after his second trip.
To the left is the Justice Hall, La Sala de Justicia. The yard of Monteria, Patio de la Montería leads to the palace of Peter I, Palacio mudéjar o de Pedro I. Originally built in 1364, the palace is an excellently preserved example of Mudejar architecture, a combination of Christian architecture with Moorish elements.
Next to it is the Palace of Charles V, Palacio Gótico. Here, the marriage of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal took place in 1526.
Highlight of the Alcazar of Seville are the gardens, originally dating back to Charles V. The impressive gardens have undergone several stages of development, so that you can admire the influences of horticultural art of Arabia, France and Britain today. Fountains, watercourses, grottos and shady trees provide relaxation from the hustle and heat of the city.

Der Alcazar liegt versteckt hinter einer der Palastmauer. Man betritt das Gelände durch das Löwentor, die La Puerta de Leon und gelangt in den Löwenhof.
Zur Rechten liegt das sogenannte Zimmer des Admirals im Casa de Contratación, dem Haus des Handels. Es wurde 1503 gebaut um den Handel mit den neuen Kolonien zu regeln. Hier trafen sich einst Ferdinand und Isabella mit Columbus nach seiner zweiten Reise.
Zur Linken liegt der Justizsaal, La Sala de Justicia. Durch den Hof der Monteria, Patio de la Montería, gelangt man zum Palast Peters I, Palacio mudéjar o de Pedro I. Der ab 1364 errichtete Palast ist ein hervorragend erhaltenes Beispiel der Mudéjar-Architektur, eine Kombination von christlicher Bauweise mit maurischen Elementen.
Gleich daneben befindet sich der Palast Karls V, Palacio Gótico. Hier fand im Jahre 1526 die Hochzeit von Kaiser Karl V. mit Isabella von Portugal statt.
Ein Highlight des Alcazar von Sevilla sind die Gärten, die ursprünglich auf Karl V zurückgehen. Die beeindruckenden Gärten haben mehrere Entwicklungsphasen durchlaufen, so dass man heute die Einflüsse der Gartenbaukunst von Arabien, Frankreich und England bestaunen kann. Brunnen, Wasserläufe, Grotten und schattenspendende Bäume bieten Erholung vom Trubel und der Hitze der Stadt.

The royal palace of Real Alcazar is located in Seville, the capital of the autonomous Spanish province of Andalusia.
Dating back to the 8th century and formerly the oldest citadel built by the Moors, the palace was built on the ruins of a Roman fortress when the Almohaden transformed it into a palace. Following the conquest of the city, the Christian kings and most notably, Don Pedro, employed the best Moorish builders and artists, the Mudejaren.
In the Hall of the Envoys, the wall tiles contain many Moorish designs, and it was here that the country's rulers received envoys from abroad. The furnishings and household goods of the royal private rooms were collected from around most of the known world.
The Gala Dining Room is particularly outstanding. It contains precious wall carpets and crystal chandeliers from Moreno and a huge table dominates almost the entire length of the room.
Moorish arcades lead to the Andalusian Gardens that were planted in place of the original kitchen gardens and many of the courtyards feature a small water fountain that adds to the calm atmosphere.
Real Alcazar is the most beautiful example of Mudejaren design, a fairy tale from the 'One Thousand And One Nights'!

The Alcázar is the royal palace of Seville, renowned as one of the most beautiful buildings in Spain. There was previously a Muslim fortress on this site about 1,000 years ago, which was entirely rebuilt in the 1300s and 1400s after the reconquest of Spain. Today the Alcázar is an outstanding example of mudéjar architecture, which is that special blend of Muslim and Spanish styles that displays very elaborate ornamentation. For the next several hundred years the complex expanded and grew into one of the grandest palaces in Europe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, it is one of the most popular attractions in Spain and a must-see while you are in Seville. Our visit includes the Alcázar gardens with their labyrinths of flower-lined walks, and glorious date-palms, bananas, orange tress and citron groves. It really is a pleasing spot within the palace enclosure. The Alcázar is situated just next to the Cathedral so it is very easy to find.
We walked through the Alcázar with a local guide, which is always a great way to learn more about a place – you don’t have to go fumbling for books or walking through without understanding what you’re looking at.

The gardens are a most pleasing spot within the enclosure. They form a delicious presence, where the orange and citron diffuse their fragrance, and magic fountains spring up suddenly beneath the traveler’s feet, sprinkling with a cooling dew. The gardens actually open up earlier than the palace, so if you are up first thing in the day and you want to get a head start, take a walk in the gardens and then you can be first in line for entering the Alcázar Palace.
And then you can walk up steps to the second level, which gives you a beautiful panorama view over the gardens as you stroll along through the arcaded hallway. Parts of the second floor are still utilized by the royal family today as their private residence and official rooms for functions.
The cathedral of Seville is the world’s largest Gothic church. By any standard, the cathedral is unbelievably huge and amazingly beautiful. There are so many tall columns holding up the lofty ceiling 130 feet above the floor that it seems like you are strolling through a vast, indoor stone forest.
This grand church is located of course in the center of the historic Old Town with several prominent landmarks next to it: the Archives building and the Archbishop's Palace. Situated on a broad plaza, it's also located right next to the Alcázar Palace.
This site has been for millennia Seville’s main religious setting. Before the cathedral was constructed this was the location of one of the most important mosques in the Muslim world and 2,000 years ago it was the scene of an important Roman temple.
The entrance brings you first into the gorgeous patio courtyard. This courtyard is called Patio de los Naranjos, as in patio of the orange trees which are growing here. Formerly it was the courtyard of the original mosque on the site that was used for cleansing, for the worshipers on their way in, for ablution. This courtyard and the Giralda Tower, that we will see, are the only two remaining features of the original mosque.
Walking up the Giralda is one of the most interesting and fun things you can do while in Seville: not only will you gain great views over the vast cathedral and surrounding rooftops of the old town, but you will also have the unusual experience of walking up all those ramps that wind round and round inside the square tower.
The space of the top of the Giralda is a lovely promenade. You walk all the way around the tower to get your different views looking in all the cardinal directions, 360° panorama spread out down below all around you.
The view from its upper galleries is another one of those sites that one can never forget, with the city spread out below as a map with white, closely-packed houses looking like toys. And one looks down into patios, rooftop pools, on brown and yellow tiles, along narrow streets that wind like dark thread and then across all the housetops.

I recently made a trip into Seville to see The Real Alcazar, which has gained extra fame over the last few years having been the set for most of the Dorne scenes for Game of Thrones (GOT). While I was in town I thought I should also check out La Brunilda Tapas Bar, as it is one of the best rated Tapas Restaurants in Seville. Seville is the artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain. It is situated on the plain of the River Guadalquivir, with an average elevation of 23 feet above sea level. The population of the city of Seville is just over 700,000. The population of the metropolitan area is 1.5 million, ranking as the fourth largest metropolitan area of Spain.
The video begins at the Plaza de España, one of Seville's most easily recognized buildings and the epitome of the Moorish Revival in Spanish architecture. Next it is into the old quarter of the city where our first stop was the Royal Alcázar, a royal palace which was originally a Moorish fort. Next we walk to The Cathedral of Seville which is the largest Gothic cathedral and the fourth largest Christian church in the world. Our walk continues through the narrow streets of the Santa Cruz district. We were treated to flemenco music and dance during our lunch at the Macarena Hotel. After lunch I walk around the Parliament building of the autonomous community of Andalucía which was across the street from the hotel. It was back on the bus after lunch as we drive past the El Alamillo Bridge and bull ring as we drive out of town.
