Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew - England Attractions - Travel & Discover
Kew, the area in which Kew Gardens are situated, consists mainly of the gardens themselves and a small surrounding community. Royal residences in the area which would later influence the layout and construction of the gardens began in 1299 when Edward I moved his court to a manor house in neighbouring Richmond. That manor house was later abandoned; however, Henry VII built Sheen Palace in 1501, which, under the name Richmond Palace, became a permanent royal residence for Henry VII.

Kew Royal Botanic Gardens - London (England)
The Royal Botanic Gardens of Kew (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Gardens or Kew Gardens) are the largest, oldest and most prestigious botanical gardens in the world. The Kew Gardens, as they are generally known, house a large complex of gardens, arbours and greenhouses located in a vast park between Kew and Richmond upon Thames, on the south-western outskirts of London. The gardens were one of the ancient principles of naturalists of world renown, reckoned among their herdted famous botanic directors William William and Joseph Dalton Hooker. The current director is Stephen Hopper.
The Kew Gardens originated in the exotic gardens commanded by Lord Capel of Tewkesbury, on the large property which was then known as Kew Park. After a few years, the gardens were enlarged and enlarged by the initiative of Princess Augusta de Saxe-Gota, the widow of Prince Frederick of Wales.

Kew Gardens - The Breathing Planet Campaign
In this video, Sir David Attenborough introduces Kew's Breathing Planet Programme - a 10-year action plan to rescue, revive and restore the plants and fungi that directly or indirectly sustain us all. Its aim is to help the planet -- and everything that lives on it -- to breathe a little more easily, paving the way for a better and more secure future.
Humans are so powerful; our capacity for destruction is so great that we have to do something positive. You can't protect the natural world unless you understand it and one of the great guardians of the natural world is an institution like this.
Kew is one of the first scientific botanic gardens of the modern era. It contains something like 90% of all known species of plants, so institutions like Kew are at the forefront of the battle so save the planet.
Kew's Breathing Planet Campaign aims to raise £100 million for Kew's important work. Find out how you can help:
