The Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya (1821); Botanic Gardens in Hakgala (1861) and Botanic Gardens, Henarathgoda, Gampaha (1876) were established by the British to conduct experiments on exotic economic plants and explore plant wealth in the colony.
To become the scientifically and aesthetically finest Botanic Gardens in the Tropics by 2015, while becoming the pivotal institution for ex-situ conservation of Sri Lankan plants and providing maximum contribution to the economic growth of the country.

The Royal Botanic Garden at Peradeniya in Sri Lanka
The Gardens date back to the Kandyan kingdom, when they were used as royal pleasure grounds. However, it was soon after the British seized the Kandyan Kingdom that they were established in 1821. The Gardens are elegantly landscaped over 150 hectares of beautifully undulating grounds. Within this large loop of the meandering Mahaweli Ganga is a spectacular display of more than 400 species of indigenous tropical flora and exotic plants

Махавели для острова Шри Ланка – то же самое, что Ганг для Индии или Волга для России: это не только самая большая река в стране, но и главная жизненная артерия с древнейших времен. Начинаясь в высокогорной части острова, Махавели за сотни тысяч лет нанесла в Перадению большое количества плодородного ила, который скапливался в одном месте, благодаря тому, что русло здесь имеет форму подковы. Этот факт был замечен еще в старину: даже дикорастущие растения своим обилием и мощным ростом содавали эффект открытой тропической оранжереи.
Первые упоминания о Перадении относятся к 1371 году, когда по указу короля Викрема Баху III здесь высаживались плодовые деревья и пряные растения. Однако настоящим Королевским садом Перадения стала значительно позже – при короле Кирти Шри (1747-1780). Следующий король включил Перадению в территорию своей резиденции и даже построил здесь монастырь (вихара) и дагобу (ступу).
С приходом британцев в 1803 году дагоба и монастырь были разрушены, а на месте сада установлена минифабрика по переработке плодов и фруктов в алкогольные напитки. К счастью, это продолжалось недолго, и в 1821 году правительство одобрило предложение английского ботаника Муна учредить на месте резиденции последнего кандийского короля ботаническое учреждение. Мун был садовником Королевского Сада Кью в Англии.

Royal Botanical Garden, Peradeniya is situated about 5.5 km to the west from the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and attracts 2 million visitors annually.[1] It is renowned for its collection of a variety of orchids. It includes more than 4000 species of plants, including of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees.[1] Attached to it is the National Herbarium of Sri Lanka. The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture.

Peradeniya is the oldest botanic gardens in Sri Lanka, at the moment its the largest botanical garden as well. It was started in 1821 by the British for the introduction of economically important crops to Sri Lanka. Tea, rubber, and most of the other economic crops came to Sri Lanka through Peradeniya Gardens. And it also conducted a lot of research in agriculture prior to 1912. And in 1912 the Department of Agriculture was born in Peradeniya Gardens, and that was the turning-point in Sri Lankan agriculture.

The history of this land goes back to the fourteenth century. Since 1371 this land had been maintained as a palace garden of ancient Sri Lankan kings. But in 1821this land was developed into botanical gardens by the British government.

We have a very close relationship between these gardens and the Kew Gardens in UK. And we exchange information, and especially in plant identification. And most of the plants in Sri Lanka, almost all plants in Sri Lanka are already identified and they are chemically treated and preserved in our herbarium. And if we see any doubt about plant information or plant identification, we get information through the Kew Gardens in England.

We have got over four hundred different cultivated varieties of orchid. Most of these are developed here in our research laboratory, we conduct a lot of research on new hybrids, mutations and various things, and we also import plants from Malaysia, Thailand and other Asian countries as well. So it's a very popular attraction inside the gardens.

Giant Bamboo, or Dendrocalamus Giganteus botanically, is supposed to be the largest bamboo, from Myanmar. And that's also the fastest growing plant on earth, according to the research. It grows about one foot a day, about thirty centimetres a day and its also a very important construction material, for various construction work it's used. And I think the sprouts, the young shoots, are also edible. And so it's a miracle plant.
