Southern Suburbs of Cape Town - Leafy, Cultural and Historical
South of the City of Cape Town - on the slopes of Table Mountain, , are the oldest and most sought after established residential areas known as the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. Every suburb has a claim to fame! Mowbray and Observatory boast the world famous Groote Schuur hospital - Newlands the sporting capital of the Country - Rondebosch is home to the University of Cape Town, the beautiful original buildings being designed by Sir Herbert Baker, on land bequeathed by Cecil John Rhodes.
The commercial heart of the area is Claremont where a great deal of exciting redevelopment is focussed, but there are popular commercial centres in Wynberg and Rondebosch .
Outstanding schools, rich in history and tradition are an attractive aspect of the area, with names like SACS, Rondebosch Boys and Bishop's being regarded very highly by all of Cape Town.
The Southern Suburbs boasts some of Cape Town's best restaurants and pubs.
To the South is the embassy belt of Bishopscourt and the lush Constantiaberg Valley.

Thursday 26th April 2018. Major Colin Innes Lieutenant Frederick Guthrie Tait Golfer and Soldier
Apologies for the focus in this video, this issue was fixed for forthcoming lectures.
Winner of the Amateur Championship in 1896 and 1898 and several times a leading contender in The Open, Freddie Tait was a beloved figure and one of the finest Amateur golfers of his time.
As Lieutenant F G Tait, he went to South Africa with 2nd Bn The Black Watch at the start of the Boer War. He was a friend of Major Innes’ grandfather and both were wounded at the Battle of Magersfontein and sent to Wynberg Hospital in Cape Town to recuperate. Re-joining the Battalion, he was tragically killed inaction at Koodoosberg Drift, a few miles from Kimberley.
Major (Retd) Colin Innes comes from a long line of Black Watch Officers and is an enthusiastic amateur historian and golfer. Like Freddie Tait he is also a Member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.
