Mule Carriage French Quarter Tour | Royal Carriages in New Orleans, Louisiana
Royal Carriages of New Orleans is the oldest commercial carriage operator in the United States. The Lauga Family began providing horse-drawn carriage tours of the French Quarter in 1941. 75 years later, the Lauga Family is still providing visitors with the most authentic way to discover New Orleans via mule-drawn carriage.
James Hayes moved to New Orleans from Boston in the 1980s. He purchased a antique shotgun home just a few blocks away from the mule stable in the Faubourg Marigny. James has been working as a licensed carriage driver and tour guide for many years. Together, he and Pearl spend each evening teaching tourists the importance of the history, culture, and architecture of New Orleans.
Pearl is a young Percheron draft mule. At Royal Carriages, our mules work no more than 7 hours a day, no more than 5 days per week. It's also important to note that each mule works in the city for approximately 9 months, receiving a 3-6 month vacation each year.
New Orleans is one of the few cities that uses mules instead of horses to pull carriages. A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey, and is considered a hybrid animal that is not capable of reproducing. Mules are considered ideal working partners due to their strength and intelligence. Being half desert animal (donkey), mules are better suited to work in sub-tropical climates like New Orleans compared to horses.

narrated horse drawn carriage tour of French Quarter in New Orleans
This captures a good part of our horse drawn carriage ride through the French Quarter in New Orleans on Sunday, May 20, 2019. This was actually a really interesting ride and I now wish I had filmed more of it. I highly recommend such a carriage ride. It was way better than I initially thought it would be.

A Spanish cannon used in the Battle of New Orleans and weighing nearly 3 tons was lowered Tuesday by
A Spanish cannon used in the Battle of New Orleans and weighing nearly 3 tons was hauled by pulleys and human muscle onto a new gun carriage like one that once might have held it on a naval ship.
For generations, the 10 1/4-foot-long weapon has sat on a big wooden block in New Orleans' French Quarter, outside the Cabildo _ part of the Louisiana State Museum.
Museum director Mark Tullos says nothing is known about the cannon's history before becoming part of Gen. Andrew Jackson's defenses at Chalmette for the battle on Jan. 8, 1815.
He says its shape and markings show that it was a naval cannon made in Spain.
It might have been commandeered from a ship. It might have been mounted at Fort St. John. It might have been brought in by Jean and Pierre Lafitte, who, along with many of their followers, brought the U.S. forces artillery and thousands of the gun flints needed to keep rifles firing in exchange for pardons on piracy charges.
But there's no documentation for this cannon's location before the battle and any suggestion is pure speculation, Tullos noted.
In 1906, the cannon was given to the Louisiana State Museum and put on display two years later.
It now angles across Jackson Square, in front of the Cabildo.
Tuesday's remounting is part of preparations for the museum's exhibit about the War of 1812.
A cannonball dating back to the Civil War was found inside the cannon during a cleaning prior to Tuesday's move.
