Aerosol Suction
Yvan Maes De Wit, Director, The Royal Manufacturers De Wit, Mechelen, Belgium
Introduced by Marlene Eidelheit, Director and Head Conservator, The Textile Conservation Laboratory, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, New York
This two-day symposium gathers leading international scholars to discuss a variety of topics related to the conservation of the tapestry Christ Is Born as Man's Redeemer in the collection of The Cloisters.
On the first day of this two-day symposium conservators and curators discuss the history of tapestry conservation at the Museum. The afternoon sessions feature scholars and specialist technicians who address the preservation of major historic tapestry collections in Europe. Topics for discussion include the restoration, conservation, and preparation of tapestries for exhibition. Museum Director Thomas P. Campbell introduces the event.
The second day of this two-day symposium includes panel discussions on the techniques used to clean, support, display, and handle historic tapestries. The impact of science and technology on conservation treatments is also considered.
This symposium is made possible by the Quinque Foundation.
Additional support has been provided by the Kawasaki Good Times Foundation.
Flosstube 27 Save the Stitches Cleaning Parade Restoration Cleaning Cross Stitch WIP Needlework
Flosstube 27: Save the Stitches Cleaning Parade with Amanda Mae of Ardith Design. In this episode I do a cleaning Parade of several counted cross stitch finished pieces that I rescued from the garbage, dumpster, or charity shops. Often times if a piece is dirty or soiled, it gets thrown away. I want to show how you can rehabilitate these donated or often unwanted pieces by simply cleaning them. Please note, I am not a professional conservation textile cleaner. I defer you to reach out to museums or your local needlework guild for help or if you have any questions.
The Save the Stitches Parade begins at 9 minutes of the video. Please note, I have included some time-lapse video of removing items from frames. I did not include music or sound during these portions. Thank you for turning in. I hope in some small way to be a part of sustainable stitching. If you are financially able, just think before you walk past an unloved piece of dirty or forgotten needlework. If you have the means, you can Save the Stitches and bring these pieces back to life.

Mechelen
Mechelen (locally pronounced [ˈmɛ.x̟ə.l̪ə(n̪)] ( ), French Malines, traditional English Mechlin) is a city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium. The municipality comprises the city of Mechelen proper, some quarters at its outskirts, the hamlets of Nekkerspoel (adjacent) and Battel (a few kilometers away), as well as the villages of Walem, Heffen, Leest, Hombeek, and Muizen. The Dijle flows through the city, hence it is often referred to as the Dijlestad (City on the river Dijle).
Mechelen lies on the major urban and industrial axis Brussels-Antwerp, about 25 km from each city. Inhabitants find employment at Mechelen's southern industrial and northern office estates, as well as at offices or industry near the capital and Zaventem Airport, or at industrial plants near Antwerp's seaport.
