Royal North Devon GC (otherwise known as Westward Ho!) is the oldest course in England, and one of the iconic early links that defined golf in the U.K. in years past. England's oldest golf course could be washed away in weeks
England's oldest golf course could be washed away by
the sea within just WEEKS.England's oldest golf course could be swallowed by high tides within weeks as coastal erosion eats away at its boundaries, it was warned. Recent storms have already washed away the eighth tee of the 154-year-old Royal North Devon Golf Club. And its manager Mark Evans, 55, fears that a large part of the historic course could disappear forever with the Spring tides next month expected to swallow it up.

Westward Ho! Atlantic breakers, 9 April 2016.
From my recent holiday, on a calm & very clear day: the inevitable Atlantic wave breakers [1.43, 146MB, QuickTime MP4 video]. Walking this beach is favoured by both residents & visitors although you need a receding to low tide. Viewed from the 'Pebble' Ridge, you can see it's actually cobbles & boulders & are unstable on the slope, hence this concrete block slipway is the ideal ascent & descent. The ridge is a natural feature, but needs artificial rebuilding after storm damage: winter 2013/14 was very destructive & after winter 2015/16, a little topping ridge was added. The source rock is both of Bude & Crackington Formations (topmost of Carboniferous) which form the cliffs SW to Hartland Point (24 km away) & beyond. These are dull red sandstones & turbidite shales respectively but, after centuries in seawater, they're rounded into cobbles & acquire a dull grey colour. Permanent longshore drift then slowly transports (from Hartland point only, the cliff line takes a 90 degree bend there, then aligns north-south) the products to Westward Ho!. Material is dumped here because the Taw & Torridge estuaries converge behind my viewpoint, hence disrupting the longshore drift. Behind the ridge, just visible towards video end: the Northam Burrows Country Park (which remains common grazing land for locals) & shared with the Royal North Devon Golf Club. Video commences by viewing north, towards the Saunton Sands Hotel (white building), then pans to (just about) glimpse Lundy Island, to NW. This is an SSSI & Britain's sole Marine Nature reserve, a granite intrusion (55 to 50Ma ago, mid-Eocene) presaging opening of the north Atlantic ocean; hence totally unique in this region.....it is 240Ma younger than the granite intrusions of Dartmoor, Bodmin moor etc. Video then pans to SW, towards Westward Ho! village, which hugs the north-facing cliffs & beach front. The little, very recent topping ridge to the 'Pebble' Ridge is just visible. Then back to end at the slipway.
