Luang Prabang has both natural and historical sites.
Among the natural tourism sites are the Kuang Si Falls, Tat Sae Waterfalls, and Pak Ou Caves. Elephant riding is offered at some sites.
Phou Si, in the center of the town, has broad views of the town and river systems, and is a popular place to watch the sun setting over the Mekong River. At the end of the main street of Luang Prabang is a night market where stalls sell shirts, bracelets, and other souvenirs.
The Haw Kham Royal Palace Museum and the Wat Xieng Thong temple are among the best known historical sites. The town, particularly the main street, is dotted with many smaller wats such as Wat Hosian Voravihane. Every morning at sunrise, monks walk in a procession through the streets accepting alms offered by local residents, an event popular with tourists but subject to some controversy surrounding tourist etiquette.
Mountain biking is quite common, with people often biking around the town or to the waterfalls for the day. Down the Mekong River, a 15-minute boat ride from the city centre, Ban Chan (the pottery village) is an interesting place.

ROYAL PALACE MUSEUM | HAW KHAM LUANG PRABANG, LAOS
Evoking traditional Lao and French beaux-arts styles, the former Royal Palace was built in 1904 and was home to King Sisavang Vong (1905–59), whose statue stands outside. Within are tasteful, decidedly sober residential quarters, with some rooms preserved much as they were when the king's son (and successor) was captured by the Pathet Lao in 1975. A separate outbuilding displays the five-piece Royal Palace Car Collection.
After the death of King Sisavang Vong, the crown Prince Savang Vatthana and his family were the last to occupy the palace. After the revolution in 1975, the building was taken over by the government. The palace was then converted into a national museum and opened to the public in 1995.
Located in the city just the other side of the road from Phou-Si mountain, the palace is in walking distance of all main hotels and guest houses.
In the palace compound, there are several buildings including the Royal Barge Shelter, a conference hall, and Haw Pha Bang (a ornate pavilion) that houses the standing Buddha statue called Prabang. In the pass the Prabang statue and many other religious artifacts were housed in the palace, the front wing.
Also in the compound is a building that houses the royal car collection. It's a small collection, mostly American cars from the 1950s to 1970s. Behind the garages is another building which has a gallery for rotating exhibitions.
The palace building can be visualised in three main parts: The front wing, consisting of reception areas; the throne hall (in the middle); and the back wing that was once residential area.
No single treasure in Laos is more historically resonant than the Pha Bang, an 83cm-tall gold-alloy Buddha. To find it, head to Wat Ho Pha Bang in the southeast corner of the palace gardens
Inside the museum, footwear and photography are not permitted and you must leave bags in a locker room to the left side of the main entrance.

Inside the former Royal Temple, Luang Prabang, Laos
This was the Royal Temple in Luang Prabang, Laos, on the grounds of the former Royal Palace. In 1975 the last king of Laos, king Vattana, abdicated as the communist Pathet Lao completed their takeover of the country. Today the former palace is known as the Luang Prabang National Museum.

I first tried to visit the Luang Prabang National Museum, but I was quickly turned away because I was wearing shorts. Instead, I decided to go shopping at the night market and found a cheap pair of elephant pants to help me get into the museum. I perused the stalls until an unusual amount of flies started to swarm through the market. I then made my way over to an alley where cheap street food could be found. Only 15,000 kip for a full meal! From there, I went to Utopia, a popular backpacker bar that's a great place to meet other travelers.
The next day, I got into the National Museum with the ticket I bought the day before. The National Museum is worth a visit, though neither photographing nor filming is allowed inside. After that, I met up with my friends Katja and Isabel, and we ascended Mt. Phou Si, the highest point in the main part of town. We watched the sunset and explored the temples and worship areas throughout the hill.

Old Luang Prabang Laos Royal Palace
On my second trip to Laos (07/2013), I had an opportunity to stay in Luang Prabang for a few days, and of course, my first place to visit was the royal palace (a currently museum) where some former kings of Laos and their families had lived. It's a magnificent place.
