Royal Palace Gödöllő
A castle that you would want to call home
In Gödöllő the 260-year-old Royal Palace is one of the largest palaces in the country and is a significant work of Hungarian Baroque architecture.
The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy's ruling couple, Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Queen Elizabeth (known as Sisi) frequently stayed here. Most of the building has been restored to its former glory. Classical concerts and major festivals are organized in the state room and the ceremonial court of the palace.
Gödöllöi Kiralyi Kastely (Hungary) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Gödöllöi Kiralyi Kastely in Hungary.
Close to Budapest is Gödöllő Castle, once the favourite summer residence of Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary and Empress of Austria. It is a fairy-tale castle that is still as magical today as it was at the time of its completion in 1748. A magnificent staircase leads up to the Ceremonial Hall on the first floor which forms the centre of a symmetrical plan. There is a suite with a small dining room in which the closest members of the royal family dined. When architect Antal Grassalkovich first began to have the castle built he also designed the palace garden which was typical of the aristocratic taste of that time, an English garden with tree lined avenues and lawns. Queen Elizabeth played a significant role in the balance of power between Austria and Hungary. She loved Hungary and its people, felt at home in the castle and in the Writing Room committed herself to learning the Hungarian language from the most learned tutors of that time. The imperial architecture of Gödöllö Palace, the world’s second largest Baroque castle after Versailles, became the model for many subsequent Baroque palaces.

Gödöllői Királyi Kastély/Royal Palace Gödöllő
One of the largest baroque castles in Hungary, the castle in Gödöllő, which is constantly being renovated, is a monument as well as an outstanding historical value of our homeland. A medium in which cultural, tourist and protocol functions coexist peacefully – all spiced up with family-friendly services.
His owner, one of the most respected Hungarian aristocrats of the ministers of law, president of the Hungarian Court Chamber of Queen Maria Theresa, Antal Grassalkovich I. Schuf, created a new style of Hungarian castle architecture. In the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the castle served Queen Elisabeth (Sisi) as a popular resort. After World War II it was a Soviet barracks, then a social home, and this led to the slow decay of the building. At the beginning of the 1990s the renovation of the chateau’s building ensemble began and since 1996 visitors from all over the world have been welcomed. The periods of its history are represented by the permanent exhibition in the Museum of the Castle (Baroque period, stay of the royal family in Gödöllő, while the living area of the Gizella wing presents the events connected with the castle up to the present day). The baroque theatre and the pavilion on the King’s Hill have also been renovated.
Recently we have been enriched by a number of monuments (the castle garden has been renovated, the Erzsébet veranda has been rebuilt, the Horthy bunker can be visited, the riding hall and the baroque stable have been completed, a 3D showroom and our new permanent exhibition, the Royal and Aristocratic Equestrian Culture have been opened). Our wide range of museum-educational offers promotes experiential learning. The castle in Gödöllő is today one of the most attractive, exciting institutions and tourist destinations in Hungary, with its historical tradition and its representative rooms, which have been renovated in keeping with the times and meet the highest protocol requirements, as well as its colourful range of cultural programmes.
In our museum shop and in the shop of the Court Suppliers we await you with a sophisticated and rich offer, which is connected in numerous points of reference with the royal family and with Gödöllő!

Gödöllő - 360 VR Tour - Liberty Square (Szabadság tér) and Royal Palace (Királyi Kastély) 4K
Gödöllő is a small town 25km northeast of Budapest and home to the Szent István University. The central part (Szabadság tér), as well as the Royal Palace (Gödöllői Királyi Kastély) are the most beautiful parts of the town, easily accessible from Budapest by the regional train (HÉV 8 from Örs vezér tere).
Throughout history, the place has witnessed several occupations: the Romans in ancient times, then the Turkish rule, the Habsburg rule, and also the communism which left deep wounds into the heart of the town. Vast areas of the place (including the center and parts of the Palace Gardens were populated with communist buildings and industrial facilities. In spite of this, the old city center and Liberty Square (Szabadság tér) have mostly been preserved, far from destruction, as you can see in my video.
The palace is part of the national heritage and it is one of the largest monuments of Hungarian architecture. Surrounded by a beautiful park, it was built in the 18th century for the Grassalkovich family. It was later used as a summer residence by the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Queen Elisabeth (Sisi). This was one of the favorite residences of Queen Elisabeth and she loved spending her time relaxing in Gödöllő.

This Palace is Hungary’s Answer to Versailles
France has the Palace of Versailles, Hungary has the Royal Palace of Gödöllő—a baroque manor just half an hour away from Budapest. The ornate palace was built for Hungary’s royals; today, it is open to the public. Completed in 1748 and recently renovated, the palatial home is full of grand halls and secret rooms. It even has its own church and theater complete with an orchestra pit. One of the royal residents, Empress Elizabeth of Austria, the Queen of Hungary, left behind a notable touch—rooms bathed in a brilliant hue of violet.

One of the finest monuments of Baroque architecture in Hungary, the former Száraz-Rudnyánszky Palace was designed by András Mayerhoffer and built by Baron József Rudnyánszky (spouse: Julianna Száraz) between 1743 and 1751 on the place of a Roman villa rustica and using an earlier palace that stood here. The Száraz-Rudnyánszky Palace was built in the so-called Grassalkovich Style. The original Gothic palace was built in the 13th century for the Tétény family that was related to the Árpád Dynasty
