The Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha in Kandy Sri Lanka
In the cultural heart land of the island is Kandy, Sri Lanka's second largest city, which is nestled at the foothills of the hill country and lies on the banks of the Mahawelli River.
The sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, symbolic of the sovereignty over the island is preserved here in its own temple.
Ever since the 4th century when Buddha’s tooth was hidden from sacrilegious hands in an Orissan princess’s hair, the relic has grown in repute and holiness in Sri Lanka and throughout the Buddhist world.
As a tourist, one can share, along with the local people the flower offering to Buddha and if you are lucky, you might even witness the ancient cleansing ritual, carried out by the Buddhist monks prior to entering the inner sanctum of the sacred tooth relic.
A visit to Sri Lanka in August will guarantee the sight of the famous Pera Hera festival, when the Buddha’s tooth is paraded around the city on the back of an elephant in what is probably Asia’s biggest celebration.
