With 3418 rooms and floor area of 315000 sq meters, it is the largest Royal Palace in Europe. Currently, it is owned by the Spanish State and is used for ceremonial functions only. King Felipe and the Spanish Royal Family live in a more modest Palace on the outskirts of Madrid. The Palace and several rooms, including the Royal Chapel, are open to the public. The admission fee is about eur 10 p.p. Taking pictures and filming is only allowed in certain areas. Unfortunately, it is strictly forbidden in the rooms and the Royal Chapel. Royal Palace of Madrid
I'm glad we went to the Royal Palace but I don't think it's one of those places I'd go back to again. It was opulent and beautiful but it seemed a bit 'staged'. It wasn't like going to a palace that attempted to show you what life was back in the day which is what I prefer. But even though it wasn't my fav and it rained on us, we still had a good day. I mean, c'mon, we are still in Spain, right? Happy Travels! Sandra:)

Madrid, Spain: The gardens of the Royal Palace - Los jardines del Palacio Real
The Royal Palace of Madrid is surrounded in two sides by gardens. The most imposing one is the Campo del Moro, located at the back of the Palace. It is arranged in the english style, with lawns and trees. It allows a beautiful view of the facade of the palace. By contrast, the Sabatini gardens are smaller and french in style.

After the heavy work of NATO meetings on Tuesday the leaders met for dinner amidst the splendour of the Spanish Royal Palace in Madrid.
The King and Queen of Spain hosted the banquet.

King of Spain Leaves Palace
I happened to walk by the palace in Madrid when the king was getting ready to leave. I thought it would be neat to film it so my friends and family could also experience it

The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family at the city of Madrid, but it is only used for state ceremonies. King Felipe VI and the Royal Family do not reside in the palace, choosing instead the more modest Palacio de la Zarzuela on the outskirts of Madrid.
The palace is owned by the Spanish State and administered by the Patrimonio Nacional, a public agency of the Ministry of the Presidency. The palace is located on Calle de Bailén (Bailén Street) in the western part of downtown Madrid, east of the Manzanares River, and is accessible from the Ópera metro station. Several rooms in the palace are regularly open to the public except during state functions. An admission fee of €11 is required. Some days it is free.
The palace is located on the site of a 9th-century Alcázar (Muslim-era fortress), near the town of Magerit, constructed as an outpost by Muhammad I of Córdoba and inherited after 1036 by the independent Moorish Taifa of Toledo. After Madrid fell to Alfonso VI of Castile in 1083, the edifice was only rarely used by the kings of Castile. In 1329, King Alfonso XI of Castile convened the cortes of Madrid for the first time. Philip II moved his court to Madrid in 1561.
The old Alcázar was built on the location in the 16th century. After it burned 24 December 1734, King Philip V ordered a new palace built on the same site. Construction spanned the years 1738 to 1755 and followed a Berniniesque design by Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti in cooperation with Ventura Rodríguez, Francesco Sabatini, and Martín Sarmiento. Charles III first occupied the new palace in 1764.
The last monarch who lived continuously in the palace was Alfonso XIII, although Manuel Azaña, president of the Second Republic, also inhabited it, making him the last head of state to do so. During that period the palace was known as Palacio Nacional. There is still a room next to the Real Capilla, which is known by the name Office of Azaña.
The palace has 135,000 square metres (1,450,000 sq ft) of floor space and contains 3,418 rooms. It is the largest royal palace in Europe by floor area. The interior of the palace is notable for its wealth of art and the use of many types of fine materials in the construction and the decoration of its rooms. These include paintings by artists such as Caravaggio, Francisco de Goya, and Velázquez, and frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Juan de Flandes, Corrado Giaquinto, and Anton Raphael Mengs. Other collections of great historical and artistic importance preserved in the building include the Royal Armoury of Madrid, porcelain, watches, furniture, silverware, and the world's only complete Stradivarius string quintet.

Walking in the courtyard or the outer part of the Royal Palace. I could not video or take pictures inside of the palace. But it was beautiful!
Royal Palace of Madrid
The Royal Palace stands on the site of the former Alcazar of Madrid, a medieval fortress transformed into a lavish palace by John II, Charles V and Phillip II who in 1561 made it the official residence of the Spanish Monarchy. The Alcazar, sumptuously decorated by Phillip II and Phillip IV, who commissioned this work to Velázquez, was destroyed in a fire on Christmas Eve 1734.
Royal Palace of Madrid (El Palacio de Oriente)
The Palacio Real. The Spanish Royal Palace in Madrid serves a function: The Royal Family does not live in the palace although it is its official residence but the building is used for official public affairs. Part of it is open to the public. This Baroque giant on the west side of the city has 3,418 rooms, making it the largest palace in Europe.
Once a Moorish fortress, the Royal Alcázar of Madrid was a castle where the kings of Castile and other members of the royal family once lived. It all went up in flames in 1734 – it was Christmas time and the alarm bells that sounded were confused with the Mass bells. The Palacio Real built on the same location surpassed its predecessor in its splendour. In 1764, King Carlos III moved in. Nowadays, the royal treasures are one of the main reasons to visit the palace, although the gardens are also very popular.
