Harrogate Choral Society perform 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot', Royal Pump Room Museum
On 26 November 2016, Harrogate Choral Society performed 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' at the Royal Pump Room Museum.
This was part of an event entitled 'Song of Crimplene, Sung in Kingfisher Blue' for Yorkshire Year of the Textile, led by poet Rommi Smith.
Rommi reflected on the history of a Crimplene dress in kingfisher blue, created in 1970 and donated to the museum's collection by the Harrogate Choral Society. She also drew on themes of liberation and song, which relate to both Harrogate and the voice and the act of singing. Rommi performed the poem in collaboration with Jenni Molloy, a composer and double-bass player.
Rommi's poem draws on the fascinating story of Thomas Rutling, a US-born slave who was part of the Fisk Jubilee singers, an African American vocal ensemble. The singers toured the US and Europe, performing ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ to Queen Victoria. Rutling eventually settled in Harrogate and died in the town.
The event closed with 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot' sung by members of Harrogate Choral Society, wearing their new uniforms.
