The Royal Area of Meknes Had A Mausoleum, Prison and Golf Course
Meknes sightseeing continued with the Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail decorated with kufic writing and exquisite detail. The Sultan created his Royal capital thanks to any army of bricklayers, black , Christian and Jewish slaves who built palaces, stables, granaries and gardens. A cruel despot who managed to leave one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco.
A photographic highpoint in Morocco is one of the colorfully dressed water men standing around who pose for tips. Each man makes his own fashion statement and wears different style hats, tin water cups slung across the chest and a water bag on his back. Unfortunately, whatever a person does tip, never seems to be enough. Don't you just hate tipping in foreign countries?
Meknes Graineries and Stables in Morocco
Moulay Ismail's Granaries and the Stables in Meknes provided food and stabling for 12,000 horses. Nearby is the Agdal Basin, a stone line lake utilised to water the Sultan's gardens. Background music is Reflections by MK2.
Meknes Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Meknes in Morocco.
Meknes is one of Morocco's four royal cities and became famous due to its megalomaniac monarch, Sultan Moulay Ismail, who is also known as Morocco's Sun King. The cruel and despotic sultan made Meknes the mightiest fortified city in North Africa.
Moulay Ismail had an army of 150,000 men who were stationed at each of the country's main strategic points. Included in his royal household was a harem of 600 wives of various races, as well as countless children and a large retinue of African slaves. His former residence, the Dar-el-Makhzen Complex, contained 50 palaces that were divided by way of gardens, barracks and stables in which there were 12,000 horses.
The Medina of Meknes is a World Heritage Site and contains both medieval and modern architecture. The old town consists of the Ville Imperiales, the ruins of the palace complex and also the Medina with it residential and commercial districts. It also includes the former Jews Ancient district and the Nouveau Mellah that is now known as Riad.
The Madrasa Bou-Inania is one of the most important buildings in the Medina. Its courtyard contains a shell-shaped well that is used for ritual bathing. The ground marble and alabaster stuccowork is decorated with objects made with fine spatulas.
The Great Mosque was founded by the Almohads but was altered during the time of the Meridis and provides a close insight into the world of Islam.
The Berber tribe of Meknassa first gave this city its name but following thousands of years of dramatic history, the former royal city of Meknes remains an enigma to the present day.

Beautiful Meknes, the ancient capital of MOROCCO
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a quick tour around the beautiful city of Meknes, the old capital of Morocco. Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. Meknes is a city in northern Morocco. It’s known for its imperial past, with remnants including Bab Mansour, a huge gate with arches and mosaic tiling. The gate leads into the former imperial city. The Mausoleum of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who made the city his capital in the 17th century, has courtyards and fountains. To the south, ruined Heri es-Souani is a vast structure once used as stables and for food storage.
Morocco, a North African country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, is distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences. Marrakesh’s medina, a mazelike medieval quarter, offers entertainment in its Djemaa el-Fna square and souks (marketplaces) selling ceramics, jewelry and metal lanterns. The capital Rabat’s Kasbah of the Udayas is a 12th-century royal fort overlooking the water.

Meknes, Imperial City; Morocco
Moulay Ismail was one of Morocco's most tyrannical and bloody rulers. With his Black Guard, a conscripted slave army from Sudan, he was able to consolidate his power by conquering the Berber tribes in the south and pushing back the European powers rooted in the north.
With European slaves won by conquest and by the Barbary Pirates Moulay Ismail constructed massive works including the Imperial City at Meknes He transformed a provincial agricultural town into the heart of an empire in 50 years.
Join Cara, John, and their 1 year old daughter Abigail as they explore the sites of the Imperial City by horse drawn carriage, called a caleche. They visit the granaries, royal gardens, Moulay's mausoleum, and the many gates and walls of the city.

MOROCCO | Traveling to The Blue City
Let's explore Morocco's blue city of Chefchaouen (also known as The Blue Pearl), as well as the nearby ancient royal stables in Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis!
These are some of the highlights of our Moroccan holiday with our toddler daughter.
We started our family vacation by landing in Casablanca and checking out the Hassan II Mosque, then staying for two nights at a Riad in Fes (see our Morocco Part I vlog for that part of our trip!). We then headed north towards Chefchaouen as our next stop. We took the long way up to the blue city so we could stop by Meknes and Volubilis along the way. It was a small detour but it was well worth it to see these incredible sites!
Be sure to check out Part III of our Morocco Adventure family vlogs where we explore the chaos of Marrakech, the Berber village of Imlil in the high Atlas Mountains, and then finally ride camels in Palmerie just outside of Marrakech!
For more information about the places we visited, check out these Wikipedia links:

MOROCCO | Getting Lost in Marrakesh!
Come with us on our Morocco adventure as we explore the chaos of Marrakesh (Marrakech), take a day-trip to the quiet and traditional Berber village of Imlil in the high Atlas Mountains, and then finally ride camels in the desert oasis of Palmerie just minutes from downtown Marrakech!
Follow us on Instagram for photos from our adventures!
We started our African family vacation by landing in Casablanca and checking out the Hassan II Mosque, then staying for two nights at a riad in Fes (see our Morocco Part I vlog for that part of our trip, link below). We then headed further north towards Chefchaouen as our next stop (see our Morocco Part II vlog, link below). We took the long way up to the blue city so we could stop by the Royal Stables in Meknes and the Roman ruins in Volubilis along the way. It was a small detour but it was well worth it to see these incredible sites!
We then turned back south and (after an 8-hour drive) ended up in Marrakech. We spent a couple days there drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Jemaa el-Fnaa (Djemaa el Fna) square, dodging the snake charmers as they tried to drape their snakes around our necks, and getting hopelessly lost in the labyrinth of the medina.
While based in Marrakech we also took a day trip to the high Atlas Mountains, driving past Richard Branson's hotel (Kasbah Tamadot, link below), and ending in the Berber village called Imlil. While in Imlil we hiked up to the hotel La Kasbah du Toubkal (link below) where we had a rooftop lunch with the world's greatest view of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in northern Africa. We continued our hike to a powerful and majestic waterfall, fed by melting glacial water from the mountain.
The next day was our last in Morocco, and we finished our trip by meeting the gentle giants (camels!) and their adorable fuzzy babies in Palmerie for a little ride around the desert. Did you know baby camels are born without humps?!
Thanks for joining us on our Moroccan adventure!
