netley military hospital & cemetery - royal victoria country park - hampshire
this is so criminal , the largest military hospital is now raised to the ground.all that remains is the chapel , which is impressive in its own right. whoever commisioned this massive building to be virtually demolished should of been hung. queen victoria layed the 2 tonne foundation stone.the pier is gone, only the pier head remains . found a bit of the old railway line that serviced the hospital, no station remains unfortunately as all the history here has been almost erased. the graveyard has over 200 war graves from many countries , it really is humbling to walk through .

After the Crimean war, Queen Victoria encouraged a military hospital to be built in Great Britain. Its purpose was to train army nurses and doctors and to treat military patients to ensure their swift return to duty. Netley was chosen as the site because it was near to Southampton so that hospital ships from around the British Empire could safely dock and disembark patients.
The site was purchased at a cost of £15,000.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley was hurriedly designed by the War Department architect Mennie RO in 1856.
It was the largest military hospital in its day with 138 wards housing about 1000 beds.
The building was on three floors and serviced by full length corridors.
It was 435m (¼ mile) long and set in 27 acres of beautiful grounds.
The construction cost by 1863 was £350,000.
By the time the site was closed the hospital covered some 200 acres.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital looked magnificent and was considered to be the largest military hospital in the world at the time, although the view from inside was different.
Patients and staff had a view of the coal bunkers to the courtyards and other out-houses because the wards faced inland and north east. The architect did not allow for isolation units nor an adequate provision of fresh air ventilation and thus the design was heavily criticised. Those using the long corridors and those who worked in the administration block however did enjoy a stunning view south west across Southampton Water.
The foundation stone, a 2 tonne Welsh granite stone, was laid by Queen Victoria on 19 May 1856. Building construction then took nearly 7 years, with completion on 11th March 1863.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital was then occupied and the first patients were admitted on 19 May 1863.
After many years of use, the building was eventually vacated in 1958, 13 years after World War 2.
After a devastating Fire in June 1963, the building was considered unsafe and uneconomical to restore and eventually sadly demolished on 16th September 1966.
All that now remains of the once magnificent building is the Chapel that stands in splendid isolation in the middle of parkland, now named Royal Victoria Country Park.
