Royal Victoria Railway Southampton 2019
A short video of the Royal Victoria Railway in Southampton, Hampshire, Southern England taken on Saturday 16th February 2019. It is of 10 1/4 inch gauge and can be found in the grounds of the Royal Victoria Country Park. The circuit is quite extensive with two impressive gradients and has a journey time of approximately 7 minutes in length. Operating today was Western Thunderer, D1011. The RVR website states that the Co-Co loco is Petrol Mechanical and was built by David Curwen for the Audley End Railway in 1964. She was driven by Stirling Moss the racing driver to open their railway. After many years at Audley End, she arrived at RVR in 2005 and provided much needed relief for loco Maurice which until that time was the main diesel loco. The original side valve engine from a Ford Anglia was replaced with a diesel hydraulic system so that she is the same internally as RVR’s other diesel locomotives and she has received a full repaint in BR maroon with small yellow ends. Coaching stock in use consisted of open and enclosed coaches in a green and cream livery.
netley military hospital & cemetery - royal victoria country park - hampshire
this is so criminal , the largest military hospital is now raised to the ground.all that remains is the chapel , which is impressive in its own right. whoever commisioned this massive building to be virtually demolished should of been hung. queen victoria layed the 2 tonne foundation stone.the pier is gone, only the pier head remains . found a bit of the old railway line that serviced the hospital, no station remains unfortunately as all the history here has been almost erased. the graveyard has over 200 war graves from many countries , it really is humbling to walk through .

After the Crimean war, Queen Victoria encouraged a military hospital to be built in Great Britain. Its purpose was to train army nurses and doctors and to treat military patients to ensure their swift return to duty. Netley was chosen as the site because it was near to Southampton so that hospital ships from around the British Empire could safely dock and disembark patients.
The site was purchased at a cost of £15,000.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital at Netley was hurriedly designed by the War Department architect Mennie RO in 1856.
It was the largest military hospital in its day with 138 wards housing about 1000 beds.
The building was on three floors and serviced by full length corridors.
It was 435m (¼ mile) long and set in 27 acres of beautiful grounds.
The construction cost by 1863 was £350,000.
By the time the site was closed the hospital covered some 200 acres.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital looked magnificent and was considered to be the largest military hospital in the world at the time, although the view from inside was different.
Patients and staff had a view of the coal bunkers to the courtyards and other out-houses because the wards faced inland and north east. The architect did not allow for isolation units nor an adequate provision of fresh air ventilation and thus the design was heavily criticised. Those using the long corridors and those who worked in the administration block however did enjoy a stunning view south west across Southampton Water.
The foundation stone, a 2 tonne Welsh granite stone, was laid by Queen Victoria on 19 May 1856. Building construction then took nearly 7 years, with completion on 11th March 1863.
Royal Victoria Military Hospital was then occupied and the first patients were admitted on 19 May 1863.
After many years of use, the building was eventually vacated in 1958, 13 years after World War 2.
After a devastating Fire in June 1963, the building was considered unsafe and uneconomical to restore and eventually sadly demolished on 16th September 1966.
All that now remains of the once magnificent building is the Chapel that stands in splendid isolation in the middle of parkland, now named Royal Victoria Country Park.

Double Steam On The Royal Victoria Railway - 14/05/2017
Hello, Everyone :D
Today's outing took us to the Royal Victoria Park, Home to the military hospital and the underrated Royal Victoria Railway. The line is 10 1/4 and is just under 1 mile in length. The line mainly consists of diesel locomotives but does own several David Curwen and ex SBCR steam locomotives.
On Sunday the 14th May, the RVR booked a duel event celebrating the 40th anniversary of steam locomotive No. 4 and the first ever outing of new build No. 5. This would be a rare occasion as steam only sees around 2-3 yearly runs so to see 2 in one day I couldn't miss. This would also be one of the first times 2 trains have run at the same time. The event was named the Izzy and Dizzy birthday mash. Dizzy being the nickname for peter when he was still in works and Izzy referring to Isambard.
The line also offered footplate rides of which I was lucky enough to secure a spot behind No.5. No footage was taken but it was still a lot of fun.
Locomotives featured:
David Curwen 2-6-0 No.4 Isambard Kindom Brunel in green.
Royal Victoria 2-6-0 No.5 Peter The Private in red.
That's all for now, stay tuned for potential Gloucester Warwickshire and model railways.
Cheers, Matt.

Netley Abbey, Hampshire UK (4K)
A short aerial tour of Netley Abbey which is a ruined late medieval monastery in the village of Netley near Southampton in Hampshire, England. The abbey was founded in 1239 as a house for monks of the austere Cistercian order. Despite royal patronage, Netley was never rich, produced no influential scholars nor churchmen, and its nearly 300-year history was quiet. The monks were best known to their neighbours for the generous hospitality they offered to travellers on land and sea.

Royal Victoria Hospital - The first purpose built military hospital opened at Netley
The Royal Victoria Hospital, or Netley Hospital was a large military hospital in Netley, near Southampton, Hampshire, England. Construction started in 1856 at the suggestion of Queen Victoria but its design caused some controversy, chiefly from Florence Nightingale. Often visited by Queen Victoria, the hospital was extensively used during the First World War. It became the 28th US General Hospital from 1944 to 1945 during the Invasion of Europe. The main building - the world's longest building when it was completed - was entirely demolished in 1966, except for the chapel and former YMCA building which still survive. The extensive outbuildings, which once occupied a vast acreage of land to the rear of the main building, finally succumbed in 1978. The site of the hospital can be seen and explored in Royal Victoria Country Park.
