Royal Villa of Monza
Royal Villa of Monza
The Royal Villa (Italian: Villa Reale) is a historical building in Monza, northern Italy. It lies on the banks of the Lambro, surrounded by the large Monza Park, one of the largest enclosed parks in Europe. Following the establishment of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, the building was used as a Royal Palace and became home to the Viceroy of Italy, Eugène de Beauharnais. With the fall of the First Empire (1815), Austria annexed the Italian territories to the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, Monza being included in the province of Milan.

Monza is a city just northeast of Milan, in northern Italy. Monza Cathedral, with a 16th-century bell tower, houses the frescoed Teodolinda Chapel. The neoclassical Royal Villa of Monza, a grand estate with English landscape gardens, sits on the edge of sprawling Monza Park. Crossed by the River Lambro, this walled park also encompasses a former hunting reserve and the 1922 Autodromo Nazionale, a Formula 1 racetrack.
Monza is in Lombardy, 15km North-East from Milan. It is the capital of the Province of Monza and Brianza. Monza is well connected with Milan by train (from Garibaldi and Centrale stations) and by ATM bus line 723, 724, 722. Both train and buses arrive very close to city centre. To come to Monza by car from east or west you should take A4 highway (Turin-Milan-Venice) and exit Monza, from north the Milan-Lecco expressway (ss36) which ends in the town. From south you'd better take Milan's tangenziale nord, which starts from tangenziale est and then Monza exit.
The City centre is a pedestrian-only shopping zone, with several high-budget shops side-by-side with international brand flagship stores. The Duomo, known also as Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, buildt in 595 and then modified in 13th and 14th century. The frescoed Chapel of Theodelinda houses the Iron Crown of Lombardy, supposed to contain one of the nails used at the Crucifixion. The Parco di Monza (Monza Park) is the largest enclosed park in Europe, established in 1806 is now part of Lambro Valley Natural Reserve.
The Autodromo Nazionale (national circuit) is where the Formula 1 Grand Prix take place. During non-race days is available for visitors to race on track. The Villa Reale (royal villa), built between 1777 and 1780 by will of empress Marie-Therese of Austria, is a country palace very similar to Schoenbrunn in Vienna. Currently, it is being renewed, so only a small part of the marvelous royal apartment is open for visitors.
When people think of Monza, they more than likely think of the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix that is held here on an annual basis – this delightful city has so much more to offer however and is a great tourist destination in its own right. Monza is actually located 9 miles to the North East of Milan and is the capital of the province of Monza and Brianza with a population of approximately 120,000.
Roman findings have dated settlements in Monza as far back as the 3rd Century BC, and since that time the city has served an important role in Italian history. Monza was actually used as a summer residence of the queens of Lombardy and was also used periodically as a military headquarters. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city was embroiled in various factional feuds, and in modern times, the city became a centre of economy and industry.
Whilst many may believe Milan eclipses this smaller city, Monza should definitely not be dismissed – it has some absolutely sublime historical architecture such as the Cathedral and the Leoni Bridge, but it also features the immense Parco di Monza and of course the famous Formula 1 Autodromo.

The Royal Villa is a historical building in Monza, northern Italy. It lies on the banks of the Lambro, surrounded by the large Monza Park, one of the largest enclosed parks in Europe. It was originally built by Giuseppe Piermarini between 1777 and 1780, when Lombardy was part of the Austrian Empire, for the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria.
In 1861, when the new Kingdom of Italy was established, the building became a palace of the Italian Royal House of Savoy. The Royal Villa was abandoned by the royal family in 1900, after the murder of King Umberto I near the entrance as he returned from an event.
The palace complex includes the Cappella Reale, or the Royal Chapel, the Cavallerizza (horse-shed), the Rotonda dell'Appiani, the Teatrino di Corte (Small Court Theatre) and the Orangerie. The rooms at the first floor include grand salons and halls, and the Royal apartments of King Humbert I of Italy and of Queen Margherita of Savoy. In front of the palace are the Royal gardens, designed by Piermarini as English landscape gardens. The building hosts temporary exhibitions, but lacked a long-term resident or use until July 23, 2011, when the palace complex housed offices from 4 ministries (Economy and Finance, Reforms, Simplifications, and Tourism).

Monza Park is a large walled park in Monza, Lombardy, northern Italy. Extending over an area of 688 hectares, it is the first largest walled park in Europe, and the fourth largest enclosed one after la Mandria of Venaria Reale (Italy), Richmond Park in London (England) and Phoenix Park in Dublin (Ireland).
The park was commissioned by Napoleon's stepson Eugène de Beauharnais, during the French occupation of northern Italy, as external part of the garden of his royal palace (the Royal Villa of Monza); it was completed in 1808.
The park is crossed in its southern sector by the Lambro river. Some one third of the park is occupied by woods, while the rest is kept as lawn. The Autodromo Nazionale Monza racetrack has been located inside the park since 1922.

Minotti's 70th Anniversary Party at Villa Reale in Monza, Italy
Discover the full 70th anniversary collection here:
During Milan Design Week, on April 18, 2018, Minotti celebrated its 70th anniversary with a breathtaking installation at the spectacular Villa Reale in Monza.
A glittering group of 700 high-profile guests – including architects, designers, partners, distributors and journalists from around the world – participated in the evening event celebrating this major milestone.
A singular opportunity to revisit, through a fresh new perspective, the company’s transformative growth journey over seven decades and, at the same time, discover the delightful architecture of this former royal palace.
The main floor exhibit spanned eight rooms of the villa and outlined three different narrative scenarios that, like frames in stop motion, offered insights into the family’s values and the international appeal and distinctive style of the Minotti brand.
Using both analog and digital displays, these dynamic installations were able to recompose many previously unseen materials into a sort of large, environmental-art scrapbook.

Places to see in ( Monza - Italy ) Roseto Niso Fumagalli
The Niso Fumagalli rose garden in Monza , in Italian : Roseto Niso Fumagalli di Monza is a rose garden that can be found in the gardens of the Villa Reale in Monza. María Teresa I of Austria decided to build the Villa Arciducale when she decided to assign her son Fernando de Habsburgo-Este the carica di Governor General of the Austrian Lombardy. María Teresa chose Monza for the healthiness of the air and the amenity of the people , however she also wanted to maintain a strong symbol of union between Vienna and Milan , since the site on which they would build the town was on the route between the Lombard capital and the capital of the Empire.
The imperial architect Giuseppe Piermarini was commissioned to build the villa in 1777 and managed to complete his task in three years. Then, the young archduke Fernando enlarged the architectural complex, always by the architect Piermarini, and used the Villa as a country residence until the arrival of Napoleon's navies in 1796. Eugenio de Beauharnais , who in 1805 was named virey of the new Kingdom of Italy , established his principal residence in the town that came to be Villa Real . Between 1806 and 1808 , he wanted to expand the architectural complex, which was formed by the villa and the garden , and made the park , closed and with an area of 750 hectares, used as a hunting ground.
After the fall of Napoleon ( 1815 ), the Austrians returned, and became until the second war of independence ( 1859 ), when the Royal Villa became the heritage of the House of Savoy . King Humberto I loved the Villa very much and he liked to live there and for that reason he wanted the architects Achille Majnoni d'Intignano and Luigi Tarantola to transform many spaces. In 1900 King Humberto I was assassinated in Monza by Gaetano Bresci while witnessing a sporting event; then his son, King Victor Emmanuel III did not want to live anymore in the town of the city in which they killed his father, and so he closed and moved much of the furniture to Quirinale .
In 1934 , with royal decree, Victor Manuel III donated the town to the municipalities of Monza and Milan. In the years after the Second World War , the town was occupied and plundered and fell into decline. After a period of decline, they have recently started working to restore the village. Nowadays the Villa Real is managed by the municipalities of Monza and Milan. The building, used as a greenhouse for the garden of the villa, called Orangerie in the original project of Giuseppe Piermarini, is nowadays called il il Serrone (Large greenhouse, in Italian) and was built in 1790 .
