Walking Roys Peak in Wanaka is a MUST! The view from Roys Peak is one of my favourite views in New Zealand. It’s maybe even my favourite one! So go and check it out!
It's the third time I'm walking Roys Peak track. This time my friends and I decided to go for a sunrise walk, meaning: waking up at 3am!

Roys Peak Hike Track | Wanaka | New Zealand
Roys Peak hiking track above Wanaka near Queenstown, New Zealand is a tourist must-do, especially in winter or get up early to catch a Roys Peak sunrise.
It took two passionate North Island kiwis only 2 hours to the top (though allow 3hrs up) due to taking a few short cuts to complete a stunningly scenic round trip in just under three hours. A quick and fun video so enjoy.

Roy's Peak Hike is not for the feint hearted. If you're wondering how long Roys Peak is, it's a serious hike but the views of Lake Wanaka are worth the effort. It was one of the best New Zealand South Island hikes I did. There is some amazing scenery all around but this hike gives you the best of New Zealand South Island. Mountains, lakes, greens and blues. It's no wonder it is one of the most popular instagram spots in New Zealand.
I managed it in abut 4 hours but it could easily take a lot longer, especially if the weather conditions were not as good.

Roys Peak Track in Wanaka NZ
This is one of the famous track and to do list in NZ. I felt like giving a pat on our shoulder for getting this done????????. The path is easy and safe but you need a good level of fitness to carry out this walk as it is a physically demanding steep walk all the way up. Also, it is an open trail with no shade so if you dont like the heat of the sun(like me),get up there early hours of the day and on summer bring heaps of water and sunscreen! It can be an exhausting walk but the view though is all worth all the pain and effort.

瓦納卡是另一個繁華的南島小鎮。在這裡，我們挑戰自己，登上了高1578米的羅伊峰 (Roys Peak)。登山的路很辛苦，硬著頭皮走了三小時的陡坡，沿途沒有任何遮陰處，半途放棄的念頭不停在腦中閃過。不過，咬緊牙關，捱過崎嶇的前路後，等著我們的，是美麗動人的風景！站在山上俯瞰瓦納卡湖 (Lake Wanaka)和瓦納卡小鎮，感覺付出的辛勞和堅持都是值得的！我們也有到瓦納卡湖的That Wanaka Tree打卡哈哈！
⚠️一些注意事項：
1. 完成整個步行徑需時6-7個小時，請務必備妥完整裝備和個人補給 (食物和水是必須的！）
2. 步行徑上有兩個廁所，一個位於起點停車場附近，另一個在接近山頂的位置。
3. 由於部分的山路跨越私人牧場，在綿羊繁殖季節（每年10月1日～11月10日），步道會因此封閉。
4. 從庫克山 (Mount Cook) 到瓦納卡的山路有很多急彎，途中更看見被撞成廢鐵的車，所以務必小心駕駛。如果對自己的駕駛技術不太有信心而後面又有長長的車龍，寧願停在一旁讓他們先過，也不要逞強以高速行駛啊！

Wanaka is another vibrant town in South Island. Here we challenged ourselves and hiked the 1578m Roys Peak. The uphill climb was demanding and took us 3 hours to overcome. There were no shelters along the trail. The impulse of giving up in the middle kept flashing across our minds. Still, we endured the arduous climb and what awaited us was the marvellous view! Overlooking Lake Wanaka and the town from the peak overwhelmed us that our effort and perseverance paid off! We had visited That Wanaka Tree at the Lake Wanaka too!
⚠️ Kind Reminders:
1. The hike is a 6-7 hours return walk. Please make sure to pack essential items for the day hike (Food and water are a must!).
2. Two toilets are available along the trail: at the starting point near the car park, and near the peak.
3. No access to the whole trail is permitted from 1 October to 10 November due to lambing.
4. There’re lots of curve mountain roads on the way from Mount Cook to Wanaka. We did see cars ripped into pieces due to car accidents. So please drive safely! If you lack confidence in driving and there is a long car queue after you, better stop at the roadside first and let them overtake, instead of forcing yourself to drive at speed!

CLIMBING ROYS PEAK

Started the day cheerfully at a Lavender farm! Nothing makes us smile when there are just so many picture opportunities, even when there are bees. Subsequently we made a decision to embark on a 6hrs trek. It was our last time making such a decision for the rest of the trip.

HOW TO DO IT YOURSELF:
Rob Roy's Glacier track departs from Raspberry Flat Car Park in Mount Aspiring National Park. An hour drive from Wanaka.
The upper lookout hike (what we did) is around a 3-4 hour return walk.
It is mostly an incline to the upper lookout but not intense. Suitable for those with low-moderate fitness levels.

Roy's Peak 3am hike! New Zealand
Roy's Peak Sunrise Hike in Wanaka New Zealand!
When I knew we were going to come to New Zealand I wanted to do this hike. It is a 6 hr round trip hike. We had the great idea that we would wake up at 3am and start the hike around 4am and hopefully get there by sunrise at 7:30am.
Well lucky for us we arrived at 5:30am and although I was freezing we got some incredible star photography and saw every part of the sunrise from the top.
Seth went into military mode and started with a strict pace. After realizing I wouldn't make it, he taught me lots of tips about how to not use as much energy and I did a bit better.
If you're going to do the hike, give yourself 1.5hrs - 3 hrs to get to the spot where we stopped in the photo, an extra 30 min if you want to go all the way to the top!
Bring warm clothing, or know you wont stop hiking until the sun rises!
Take lots of photos but also just sit and enjoy the fruits of your labor!!
This hike is very popular and there will be tons of people up there, enjoy it with them!

Roy's Peak in Winter // New Zealand
Another tick off my bucket list! We hiked the Roy's Peak, or Mount Roy as some would say. Its located just outside of Lake Wanaka along the highway, and it has been rated to be one of the popular Wanaka Hikes. You could call it a Queenstown Hike as well I guess as its only 2 hours away from town. Its winter so a lot of snow was covering the peak and we were only able to reach the viewpoint.
