Ruby Mountains
The Ruby Mountains rise above northeast Nevada near the city of Elko, and nearest the Spring Creek community where my folks built the family getaway. Inside Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Lamoille Canyon cuts through the range with dramatic peaks and rivers, ornamented with quaking aspen trees named for how their leaves flutter in the wind. This short lyrical landscape film was an excuse to set one of my longtime favorite musical works (the sunrise passage from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé) to aerial cinematography, of my favorite place on Earth. Drones aren't permitted in national parks, but under the jurisdiction of the USDA, National Forests do embrace them, and Lamoille Canyon is that rare example of a National Forest crowned with high peaks, jagged terrain, and diverse landscapes rivaling any National Park in the United States.
Besides the musical reason, this worked out to be my first full drone run, testing the new DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, while also something to give my Dad on Father's Day. Filmed on May 26 & 28, edited on June 11-12, 2018, in UHD-4k resolution.

I chatted with a few cowboys in Clover Valley and with a few fishermen at Ruby Lake. I asked them if that was their favorite fishing hole in Elko County and they let me know that this was the best fishing place in the state!
I also saw the Pony Express Route that ran during 1860 and 1861 thru the Humboldt National Forest. I spotted a few antelope and a wild horse!

Beautiful Lamoille National Forest - Secret of the Ruby Mountains
Wow, this has to be our favorite campground so far on our 90 Day Around America. As you'd expect in a National Forest, the 40 site campground only has the basics - running water and restrooms (no showers). But the hiking trails and views are definitely breathtaking and well worth the 20 mile drive from Elko, Nevada.

Thomas Canyon Campground near Lamoille Nevada in Lamoille Canyon Recreation area is one of the most unknown amazing places to camp in the United States. A forest service campground (Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest) managed by concessionaire the campground is located several miles up and inside Lamoille Canyon. The canyon is a glacier carved marvel of the natural world that easily rivals Kings Canyon in natural wonder and serenity (we would argue that the location is much prettier than Kings Canyon).
30 miles from Elko and Interstate 80 Thomas Canyon Campground offers 40 primitive campsites situated on 3 loops just off the scenic byway that enters and exits the canyon. A small river flows through the center of the campground and during spring and early summer drowns out unwanted noise with a steady sound of flowing water.
Visitors enjoy fishing Lamoille Creek and exploring many local hiking trails. Only crowded on major holidays Lamoille Canyon is a unique location that should be added to everyone’s must camp list. Located within the Ruby Mountains, a desert island brimming with wildlife, sparkling lakes and streams, wildflower-filled meadows and jagged peaks.
Thomas Canyon Campground has paved roads and camping parking pads. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Pit toilets are located on the loops and water spigots are available also. Camphosts are on site for fee collection, sale of firewood and to manage the campground. Sites range from huge to small and can accommodate anything from tents to larger RVs (although larger RVs will be best served on Loop A only as both B and C have tight turns and narrow lanes).
Advanced reservations are available. Due to the fact that this area is forest service land versus a National Park guests have a lot more freedom to enjoy the surrounding area by foot, bike, atv or snowmobile. The rugged region is relatively close to the town of Elko but all guests should be self sufficient as help is not readily available.

Here’s a short film ( i guess) I did about my climbing experience in the Sierra Nevada mountains, to me it was the most beautiful and hard one yet!
Words and videos cannot describe the time we had up there.
I did this one with Daniel Gamliel who is my mountain partner and amazing person
And we enjoyed every second up there even in below freezing weather and high winds

Winter in Elko, Nevada (2002)
Elko is a city in Elko County, Nevada, United States. The population was 18,297 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elko County. The city straddles the Humboldt River.
Elko is the principal city of the Elko Micropolitan Statistical Area, a micropolitan area that covers Elko and Eureka counties and had a combined population of 46,942 at the 2000 census.
It is home to Great Basin College, as well as to the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office serving most of northern and central Nevada.
Though Elko lies along the route of the historic California Trail, it was first inhabited only in 1868, when it was at the east end of the railroad tracks built by Central Pacific Railroad (the portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad built from California to Utah). When the railroad crews moved on, Elko remained, serving as a ranch and mining freight and supply center.
Elko is said to have been named by Charles Crocker, a superintendent of the Central Pacific Railroad. He was especially fond of animal names and added the letter o to Elk. There is no definitive evidence of this naming history, but it has become the widely accepted version.
The first Elko County Courthouse was built in 1869.
In 1925, the Kelly Act (also known as the Airmail Act of 1925) authorized the U.S. Post Office to contract with private airlines for the feeder routes that fed the main transcontinental route. The first commercial airmail flight in the United States was on the 487 mile Airmail Route #5 from Pasco, Washington to what would become Elko Regional Airport on April 6, 1926. The flight was piloted by Leon D. Cuddeback and included a brief stop in Boise, Idaho to pick up more mail.
The 1910 replacement for the original courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The US Post Office-Elko Main, built in 1933, is also listed.
Elko is also the home of the annual Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering, and has been for the last 27 years. It plays host to all forms of western entertainment, from music and dancing, to poetry performances.

Jarbidge is an unincorporated community in Elko County, Nevada, United States. Located at the bottom of the Jarbidge River's canyon near the north end of the Jarbidge Mountains, it lies within the Jarbidge Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest and is near the northwest edge of the Jarbidge Wilderness, approximately 10 miles south of the Idaho/Nevada border.

Search for rubies inside the Cherokee Ruby Mine. You can sluice through rocks and dirt with a screen and look for precious treasures, including sapphires, garnets, and rutile. The price of admission is low, and the fun level is high, so make it a family outing. The mine is open for gem hunting to the public from April through October. The backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains will make it a beautiful summer vacation.

The Morefield Mine has its own exhibit of stones onsite as well as one at the world-famous Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

Colorful and unusual, opal is an eye-catching gem. Mine your own opals at the Rainbow Ridge Opal Mine. This mine has produced very valuable stones, some worth upwards of $50,000. Bring tools and buckets. You’ll be doing some serious digging to get to the treasure here, but your hard work could pay off. The mine is open from May to September.

Arc Dome
At 11,773 feet in elevation, Arc Dome is the high point in the Toiyabe Mountain Range. It is one of only 57 peaks in the mainland United States with over 5,000 of prominence. Approached by the usual route, Arc Dome does not appear very arc-shaped or domelike. The people who named it must have been looking at it from the southwest. From this location, when covered with snow, it looks Himalayan.
