We are so close to the ocean......our ride is literally about 2 minutes states Capt. Skip Feller, Owner of Rudee Tours. We've been running our whale watching trips since about 1995 and our dolphin trips since the 70's.
Feller adds, As far as whales go we have all kinds of guidelines we have to follow.......but, whales are wild animals and they do what they want. So there are a lot of times where they will come see us pretty close. We do actually guarantee our whale watching and our dolphin watching.

Rudee Inlet Flounder Fishing
Kayak Fishing for Puppy Drum- Rudee Inlet, Virginia Beach
A late spring/early summer kayak fishing trip in Rudee Inlet (Virginia Beach) in May 2017. Up to this point, I was sitting on an extremely hot puppy drum bit. This video was preceded by Rudee outings for redfish, trout, and bluefish. With my new GoPro Hero 5, i thought catching puppy drum was going to be easy. Alas, the drum bite was pretty scarce. My time was limited during this outing, leaving me with about an hour left to catch the outgoing tide. As I paddled to my little drum spot, I quickly was held up when I hooked a speckled trout on the troll with an artificial Gulp lure. Quick catch and release of the trout, and on I went towards the redfish honey hold. When I got to the spot, it seemed pretty inactive compared to previous trips. nevertheless, I was able to hook a nice little puppy drum. He fought hard for his size and gave me fits trying to land him. The St. Croix Mojo and Stradic Ci4 were crucial factors in hooking all of the fish on this trip. The very next day, I went out again to experience the Rudee Run 201, this time I had no tidal movement and sat at the red drum spot for a while, trying to probe probe for a pup. I kept getting what I thought to be croaker bites. I eventually let the gulp and jighead in the area I was getting a nibble, and BANG, huge Flounder in what I consider to be an extremely shallow cove. Flounder weren't yet an expected catch in Rudee during May 2017. I was shocked by its size and decided to give it to a fellow kayaker so he could get himself some nice flounder (fluke) filets.

Flounder at Rudee Inlet
We put a check on them Puppy Drums at Rudee Inlet but ran into several Flounders. We caught a couple of nice ones and a bunch of small ones. They appear to have grown since last year which should put a lot of the those we caught last year in harvest limits. A croaker and a small striper was caught as well
First Speck of the year (Mar 21, 2016, Rudee Inlet, VA)
First Speck of 2016, Rudee Inlet, 03/21/2016
The Wind was too strong for kayak –fishing in the wide open water. So I went to Rudee Inlet for possible puppy drum and speck (speckled sea trout).
As I expected the water temp was 49 F – 53F. The water was still too cold for puppy drum and perhaps for specks too, I thought.
I brought a variety of lures. Soon, I found one lure worked. Mirro MR52 with black back and silver body was the only one worked.
I hooked 6 specks but only four were landed. I tried for puppy drum. But I didn’t get any bites from puppy drum.

Fall Specks in Rudee, VA (Oct 11, 2017)
The smaller specks, under 20, started showing up for a week. The bigger ones over 20 will come in with full force anytime soon from now on. At the moment we enjoy the smaller ones.
Rudee was my 3rd choice. Due to the early morning thunder storm I made 2 U-turns while driving to 2 primary targets (stripers in the upper Chesapeake Bay, MD , specks in Back Creek Park, Chesapeake Bay, VA). This cost me additional 2.5 hours before I arrived at Rudee boat ramp (the 3rd choice).
First I looked for any signs of fish. I didn't see birds, but I saw some baitfish actions on the surface. I chased the baits and hooked about 15 specks up to 20.
Yes, the bigger ones will coming in anytime now chasing the baits (peanut bunkers).

Rudee Inlet Blues Virginia Beach
Early May, trolling for blues with a Bass Pro Shops $1 knock off rattle trap lure. ya know the ones in the bin in the middle of the aisle. I caught 4 on this trip, I think they are actually out in the ocean and they hear the rattle trap and come in the inlet. This seems to happen at high tide. Most folks were fishing for trout but they were few. I just troll along at about 2-3 mph and flick the lure back, close the bail and go.
